Advantages: Great fun Disadvantages: You'll want to see it again
Shrek is a fine fairy tale encouraging the ugly, the bad mannered, the poor and dispossessed to have that most important component of life - HOPE.
Shrek is a clever, oh-so contemporray parody of the fairy tale genre, in which expectations are turned on their head and damsels in distress marry the brute with the muscle, rather than the prince who sent the brute off to fight the dragon in the first place.
Shrek is good fun for people at all levels ... ...Binks from 'The Phantom Menace', Shrek goes off to rescue the fair (not to mention slightly stroppy) Princess Fiona for Lord farquhart who, being small and inadequate, is unwilling to leave his large, phallic signifier of a tower, to rescue her himself.
Princess Fiona, it turns out, is not your average, run-of-the-mill princess, although her fairytale expectations are. It turns out that she has a dreadful secret - one that she is afraid to share ...

So, OK, its a kids film, and having suffered many a low budget , no-plot, no-brain kids film over the past few years, I always welcome a film that I can enjoy too, and my family and I all enjoyed Shrek. Shrek and the donkey agree to rescue a princess from a dragon in exchange for the deeds to his swamp and hilarity ensues. The princess they rescue (Fiona voiced by Cameron Diaz) is expecting someone a bit more prince charming than Shrek, but she has a secret to hide too, when the sun goes down.... well, you'll have to see the film.
The soundtrack is great as well, it opens with a rock track and ends with Eddie Murphy ...

...up exactly where the first Shrek movie left off, this movie takes us to the kingdom of Far, Far Away as Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) return to her homeland with Donkey (Eddie Murphy), after they are summoned by her parents (John Cleese, Julie Andrews) after they discover she has been rescued from the tower. Not everyone is happy to find her married to an ogre like Shrek, with the most irate in this group being Prince Charming (Rupert ... ...Spider-Man, Star Wars, Alien, etc.), Shrek 2 is a blast. It’s an energetic screwball comedy-action-adventure and its pace never flags. For those just back from the moon, the story of Shrek 2 (based on a great children's book by William Steig) deals with a big, green, swamp-dwelling ogre called Shrek who, despite his crusty manner, found love with an adorable ogrette named Fiona. In the first film, Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) and Fiona (voice of Cameron ...

...sadly it isn't to be. Shrek has arrived on dvd in time for Christmas but compare it to some of the other big name releases of the past year and it simply doesn't hold up. For the minority that haven't seen the film then let me explain. Shrek is an ogre who lives a life of solitude in a swamp. He has disgusting habits and no friends, that's the way he likes it. However one day he finds his peace shattered by an invasion of other fairytale characters ... ...Lord Farquaad. Shrek has a grievance with this and goes sort it out. Farquaad agrees to claer the swamp if Shrek rescues a feisty Princess from a dragon. Off Shrek goes with a fast talking donkey in tow who hampers, hinders and sometimes helps Shrek out at every turn of the adventure. The film itself is incredibly entertaining and stunning to look at. The animation is excellent although it still doesn't have the same charm that runs through the Pixar ...

When Shrek hit the big screens in 2001 it quickly became one of the most highly acclaimed animations in recent years. With the huge vocal talents of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, there was never any doubt that it would be huge. But what is it that made it such an excellent creation? The film kicks off with Fairy tale creatures being traded in for hard cash, but when a talking donkey is brought ... ...big, green, smelly, scary ogre. Shrek (Mike Myers) manages to scare the guards away, and in doing so, sparks up a wonderful friendship with the donkey. Shrek goes home for what he thinks will be a peaceful evening, that is, until his swamp is invaded by all the other fairy tale creatues searching for safety. Shrek isn’t happy, so he heads towards lord Farquaads castle to get them off his land, but he bites off a little more than he can chew.

Shrek is an animated affair which has nothing to do with Disney. Woohoo! Sorry, I'm not a fan of Disney, with its iffy WASP oriented 'moral' messages and sickening schmalz, so anything to steal the animated mantle from their heads is good for me.
