Forget Sensibility - This is Pure Romance

Advantages: Wonderful Cast, Locations, Music....
Disadvantages: Lack of Special Features.

...Austen!! I had already read Sense and Sensibility, and loved the story, so I decided to go out and get the movie. The story is all about three sisters. Marianne [Kate Winslet], Elinor [Emma Thompson] and Margaret [Emilie François] Dashwood [though the story focuses mostly upon Marianne and Elinor]. Their Father, Mr Dashwood, has just died, leaving the family fortune and house to his only son, John Dashwood [James Fleet] and John's wife Fanny [Harriet ...
...get a bit confusing if you're not attentive!! This means that Marianne, Elinor, Margaret, and their mother, Mrs Dashwood [Gemma Jones] must move out of the family home and find another place to live. Fanny and John move in whilst Mrs Dashwood and her daughters are still living there. During this time, Fanny's brother, Edward Ferrars [Hugh Grant], comes to stay. He and Elinor get on well, and even appear to begin to fall in love. However, Eward is ...

A Sensible Film to Watch

Advantages: Excellent acting, wonderful storyline
Disadvantages: Children may be unable to follow

...one of all-time favorite films, Sense and Sensibility, off the shelf and turned on my trusty VCR. This has to be at least the fifth or sixth time that I watched this film since I purchased just a little over a year ago. I always enjoy it and find it particularly appealing when I'm in a bit of a serious or comtemplative mood. Sense and Sensibility boasts and excellent cast that includes Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Alan Rickman. ...
...Elinor. She looks and acts every bit the part with her spinster appearance and shy manner. Younger and more carefree, Marianne, is played by Kate Winslet. Winslet can be likened to a ripening pear on a tree, waiting to be picked. She loves music, poetry, and literature. The family suddenly finds themselves in financial straits after the death of the father. Through property laws, the bulk of his estate is left to his eldest son (from a previous marriage). ...

Superb adaptation of a classic novel

Advantages: Excellent characters, script, story and cinematography
Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea

~ Note: Silly me put this review in the wrong section. Have asked for it to be moved. ~ Ang Lee's enchanting big-screen version of "Sense and Sensibility" does justice to Jane Austen's novel. The novel - first published in 1811 - was gracefully adapted for the big screen by first-time screenwriter Emma Thompson, who received an Oscar for her efforts - as well as a nomination for Best Actress for her starring role as Elinor Dashwood. Released in ...

Mrs Henry Dashwood (Gemma Jones) and her three daughters, Elinor, Marianne and Margaret are left in financially straitened circumstances when her stepson John Dashwood (James Fleet) inherits the whole of his father's estate, Norland, since the law prevents his father Henry from leaving property to John's half-sisters. However, his father ...

Feeling the essence of the past

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, wonderful screenplay, superb performance
Disadvantages: None in my view

...According to the dictionary, Sense means "an ability to perceive and be motivated by moral or ethical principles" and Sensibility means "the capacity to respond emotionally or aesthetically." The movie "Sense and sensibility" is a combination of both the aspects defined above. Elinor Dashwood played by the Oscar winner Emma Thompson portrayed the "Sense" and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet) has portrayed the "Sensibility" phase in the movie. It ...
...from her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, which was published in 1811. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English author who is classified as one of the best woman authors of all times. Her novels possess the true essence of contemporary English country life. I have always enjoyed her books for the irony, humour, portrayal of inner feelings, ethical values and emphasis on family values. She managed to get published four of her novels in ...

An Enjoyable night in...

Advantages: Great Drama
Disadvantages: Not enough of it

Sense and Sensibility is one of those movies that you always hear people talking about and until you watch it you don't know what all the fuss is about. This adaption of Jane Austin's novel is written for the screen by Emma Thompson and nicely directed by Ang Lee. Emma Thompson also stars in the movie as Eliner Dashwood - Kate Winslet plays Marrianne Dashwood and the movie has an impressive cast including Hugh Grant, Emile Francois, Alan Rickman ...
...Marrienne who on their father's death are cruely denied any inheritence to his fortune. They have to leave the estate but soon find some hope when they are offered a home by a relative on a Devonshire Estate. A romance begins when Marrienne meets John Willoughby (Greg Wise) and Colenel Brandon (Alan Rickman). Eliner meets Edward (Hugh Grant) and starts her own quirky love story. Austin's characters are all brilliantly written for the screen and ...

Sense and Sensibility plus extra features = great item

Advantages: What extras there are complement the film well
Disadvantages: Might only appeal to a specific audience, few extra features

I can't fault the technical quality of this DVD - the menus are straightforward and easy to operate, although the one confusion I always have is whether the audio commentary option is switched on or switched off. The menus look elegant and in keeping with the marketing material used by the film, but things like this could be clearer, in my opinion. The sound and picture quality is excellent - sometimes there is a mismatch (even on TV) between the ...
...that the volume level you thought you needed is suddenly deafening, but in this case that problem doesn't apply - and in spite of the five year gap between film production and DVD, the picture never looks washed-out (as is sometimes the case). I have rated the special effects in this case as average - although I have picked up from background research that some scenes required a rain machine, because it is a period film, there is little need for ...

Jane Austen Wins My Heart Again!

Advantages: beautiful script, glorious costumes, brilliant acting
Disadvantages: plot is pretty predictable

What a beautiful film! If you are as mad about romantic films as I am, then you are in for a treat! With a star cast including Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet, we know from the start that it's going to be wonderful! The story is basically one about the confusion faced when in love and the dilemas and actions needed to be taken before it's too late. It tells of the relationships encountered by the Dashwoods, and their broken hearts. However, ...

Lovely story with an interesting theme

Advantages: Great adaptation, very entertaining
Disadvantages: none

An adaptation of the book by Jane Austin, this film tells the story of Elinor and Marianne, and their loves and disappointments. Elinor (Emma Thompson) is the elder of the sisters, and is a calm, well balanced person. She falls in love with the Edward Ferras, the brother of her selfish sister-in-law. When the family is forced to move, his sister takes the opportunity to sever the attachment, and Elinor’s love goes unrequited. Marianne also ...
...returns her love but instead of proposing to her, rejects her and disappears. The sisters are introduced to Lucy Sharpe, who is secretly engaged to Edward and unaware of Elinor’s feelings she confesses this to her in confidence. The film is set in the 18th centuary, and we get an understanding of the differences between the society of then and today. The women in the film are all strong characters, capable of ambition and aspirations. They ...

A romantic and transporting movie

Advantages: Wonderful acting and great setting
Disadvantages: Not for those afraid of a good cry

This is a story which really captures the heart. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet are perfectly cast. Thompson as the practical Elinor who alway puts everyone and everything before herself and her emotions, and Winslet as Marianne, the flippant and dizzy girl who must grow into a woman. The movie's true as possible to the book by Jane Austen, and is perfect if your ideal night in is sitting with a box of chocolates and lots of tissues on the sofa, ...
...Dashwood family. Hugh Grant is wonderful as the slightly nervous, hopelessly muddled Edward Ferrars, the love interest of Elinor, and Greg Wise is the essence of the fun loving and dashing Willoughby who snares her heart. Alan Rickman is the good looking and secure, yet painfully overlooked Colonel Brandon, and very almost steals the limelight with his distraught portrayl of the Colonel. The setting is perfect, and there are some spectacular views. ...

==You fill up my senses.....==

Advantages: Great script, beautiful cinematography.
Disadvantages: 2 hours is never enough to do this great book justice.

Of all the Austen adaptations, and I'm a huge fan, this is my favourite. It's dramatically strong, funny without being silly, really respects the female protagionists and is so beautifully filmed that it is perfect from beginning to end. Emma Thompson has written a great script. She does not use Austen's words verbatim, but has created a witty and thoughtful story so in character with Austen that one doesn't miss the 'essential' lines from the book, ...
...Moggach's adaptation of 'Pride and Prejudice', where every line, every scene brought a groan of disappointment. The one glaring mistake for me was that Thompson left out one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the book, when Willoughby returns to Marianne and Eleanor refuses to let him see her. Whether this was due to time constraints or to it putting Eleanor (played by Thompson) either in a detremental light or knocking her character out of the ...

Sense and Sensibility

Advantages: Great cast, writing, score...
Disadvantages: Maybe for Austen fans only

This adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel is by far the best I have seen. Starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson as sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood, it chronicles their struggle to fit into a society obsessed with money and social status, themselves left with nothing after their father's death. Also starring Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and my personal favourite Alan Rickman, the cast excel in their roles. As well as starring in the film (her ...
