...Austen!! I had already read Sense and Sensibility, and loved the story, so I decided to go out and get the movie.
The story is all about three sisters. Marianne [Kate Winslet], Elinor [Emma Thompson] and Margaret [Emilie François] Dashwood [though the story focuses mostly upon Marianne and Elinor]. Their Father, Mr Dashwood, has just died, leaving the family fortune and house to his only son, John Dashwood [James Fleet] and John's wife Fanny [Harriet ...

...one of all-time favorite films, Sense and Sensibility, off the shelf and turned on my trusty VCR.
This has to be at least the fifth or sixth time that I watched this film since I purchased just a little over a year ago. I always enjoy it and find it particularly appealing when I'm in a bit of a serious or comtemplative mood.
Sense and Sensibility boasts and excellent cast that includes Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet, and Alan Rickman. ...

Ang Lee's enchanting big-screen version of "Sense and Sensibility" does justice to Jane Austen's novel. The novel - first published in 1811 - was gracefully adapted for the big screen by first-time screenwriter Emma Thompson, who received an Oscar for her efforts - as well as a nomination for Best Actress for her starring role as Elinor Dashwood. Released in ...

...from her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, which was published in 1811.
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English author who is classified as one of the best woman authors of all times. Her novels possess the true essence of contemporary English country life. I have always enjoyed her books for the irony, humour, portrayal of inner feelings, ethical values and emphasis on family values. She managed to get published four of her novels in ...

Advantages: Great Drama Disadvantages: Not enough of it
Sense and Sensibility is one of those movies that you always hear people talking about and until you watch it you don't know what all the fuss is about. This adaption of Jane Austin's novel is written for the screen by Emma Thompson and nicely directed by Ang Lee.
Emma Thompson also stars in the movie as Eliner Dashwood - Kate Winslet plays Marrianne Dashwood and the movie has an impressive cast including Hugh Grant, Emile Francois, Alan Rickman ...

Advantages: What extras there are complement the film well Disadvantages: Might only appeal to a specific audience, few extra features
I can't fault the technical quality of this DVD - the menus are straightforward and easy to operate, although the one confusion I always have is whether the audio commentary option is switched on or switched off. The menus look elegant and in keeping with the marketing material used by the film, but things like this could be clearer, in my opinion. The sound and picture quality is excellent - sometimes there is a mismatch (even on TV) between the ...

What a beautiful film! If you are as mad about romantic films as I am, then you are in for a treat! With a star cast including Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet, we know from the start that it's going to be wonderful! The story is basically one about the confusion faced when in love and the dilemas and actions needed to be taken before it's too late. It tells of the relationships encountered by the Dashwoods, and their broken hearts. However, ...

Advantages: Great adaptation, very entertaining Disadvantages: none
An adaptation of the book by Jane Austin, this film tells the story of Elinor and Marianne, and their loves and disappointments. Elinor (Emma Thompson) is the elder of the sisters, and is a calm, well balanced person. She falls in love with the Edward Ferras, the brother of her selfish sister-in-law. When the family is forced to move, his sister takes the opportunity to sever the attachment, and Elinor’s love goes unrequited. Marianne also falls ...

This is a story which really captures the heart.
Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet are perfectly cast. Thompson as the practical Elinor who alway puts everyone and everything before herself and her emotions, and Winslet as Marianne, the flippant and dizzy girl who must grow into a woman.
The movie's true as possible to the book by Jane Austen, and is perfect if your ideal night in is sitting with a box of chocolates and lots of tissues on the sofa, ...

Advantages: Great script, beautiful cinematography. Disadvantages: 2 hours is never enough to do this great book justice.
Of all the Austen adaptations, and I'm a huge fan, this is my favourite. It's dramatically strong, funny without being silly, really respects the female protagionists and is so beautifully filmed that it is perfect from beginning to end.
Emma Thompson has written a great script. She does not use Austen's words verbatim, but has created a witty and thoughtful story so in character with Austen that one doesn't miss the 'essential' lines from the ...

Advantages: Great cast, writing, score... Disadvantages: Maybe for Austen fans only
This adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel is by far the best I have seen. Starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson as sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood, it chronicles their struggle to fit into a society obsessed with money and social status, themselves left with nothing after their father's death.
Also starring Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and my personal favourite Alan Rickman, the cast excel in their roles.
As well as starring in the film ...
