Be prepared to be scared. James Wan's directorial debut, written by and starring Leigh Whannell, is a violent, bloody, psychologically exhausting and exhilarating exercise in...
more...terror. Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) are chained in a vile, disgusting bathroom, separated by a bloody corpse holding a gun and a tape recorder. They are each given a saw--the only obvious way out is to cut one of their feet off. A serial killer who specialises in torturing morally bereft strangers is playing a game with them: Gordon has less than eight hours to kill Adam or else the doctor's wife (Monica Potter) and daughter (Mackenzie Vega) will be murdered. As the two men engage in a battle of wits, alternately trying to help each other and secretly attempting to win the game, a series of flashbacks reveals the history of the madman and the pair of detectives (Danny Glover and Ken Leung) handling the case. Some of the torture scenes are excruciatingly horrible and hard to watch, a real treat for fans of the genre. Inspired by the work of David Lynch (BLUE VELVET, TWIN PEAKS) and Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA, INFERNO), Wan has created a scintillating suspense thriller that will have audiences continually shocked, repelled, frightened, and surprised, right up to the very last second (which Whannell has said was influenced by the endings of such films as THE USUAL SUSPECTS and THE SIXTH SENSE). The accompanying heavy metal soundtrack is appropriately scary as well.

Saw - what a film!
Review of Saw (Wide Screen) (Uncut) (DVD) by lucasc896

Advantages: Great tension building, good gore factor, VERY imaginitive
Disadvantages: Low budget, clichéd in places

I had heard alot about this film before I watched it. Everyone mention the infamous 'inverted beartrap' scene, or the barbed wire scene. If you're a lover of gorey horrow films this will not dissapoint! Some of the most evil killings I've seen. Wan has done a great job of tension building. The combination of cold characters, dark lightning and tension-full music sets of the evil plot perfectly. I wasn't particularly 'blown away' with the special ... Read review

Saw: horror without monsters and ghosts
Review of Saw (Wide Screen) (Uncut) (DVD) by NicoB

Advantages: A story that could be true
Disadvantages: Some scenes are too short

The story told in this movie is very sick, I think you must be sick to even think up a story like this. The story is about a people getting killed by some lunatic, but he doesn't kill anyone, they all kill themselves. The victims wake up in the strangest places and get instructions on a video or audio cassette about how they can survive the situation they are in: sit tight and you will die, or you can do what is told and if done right and in time ... shock horror! no, really.
Review of Saw (Wide Screen) (Uncut) (DVD) by lazy_girl

Advantages: original
Disadvantages: not particularly scary

The reality of this film did not live up to expectations. I'm not normally a horror film fan, but this one was worth watching, at least for the beginning. It started very well, the fright and disorientation of the two main characters waking up in a cold, scruffy warehouse, the clues that didn't seem to lead anywhere, desperately trying to work out what was going on. The psychological aspect was executed brilliantly, two strangers forced to co-operate, ... Read review

SAW (wide screen) (uncut) (sell through)
Review of Saw (Wide Screen) (Uncut) (DVD) by bddclaire

Advantages: great film, great story line
Disadvantages: if you dont like blood dont watch

the film at first was a great but confusing opening, this film gets you thinking for example how the hell did they get there? it is a gripping film thorough out the whole of the film which will keep you in your seats right through till the very end of the film. There is little twists and turns as there is not much time left till the end. This is a must see film i would not recommend it if you do not like blood and well i shall leave the rest for you ...
