Advantages Advantages Fun acting, excellent timing, beautiful setting, lots of laughs

Disadvantages Disadvantages No smell-o-vision!!!!! Too smooth an ending.

I've been a fan of Brenda Blethyn's since I first saw her in "Secrets and Lies" (for which she received an Academy Award Nomination). I was even more enthralled with her performance in "Girls Night" which I also reviewed here. And then she appeared in her most startlingly different role as the mother Mari Hoff in "Little Voice" (for which she got another Oscar nomination). So, when I saw the trailers for this movie, I knew I had to see it as soon as possible. Ms. Blethyn gives another totally believable performance here, which isn't in the least bit surprising. What is surprising is that this ... more

Advantages Advantages British Humour at its best.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I have seen this movie over and over again and loved it more with every viewing and so I thought an op might remind some of you of an older film that still remains a classically British true comedy of our time. Nigel Cole directs this film and it stars Craig Ferguson, Brenda Blethyn and Thceky Karyo, and is set in a small Cornish village. The atmosphere of the village is typically that of a fishing village and the mentality of the people is such that it could only be in England. The humour is wonderful and makes me cry with laughter every time I see it. The story revolves around a lady called ... more

    Advantages Advantages Wasted Old Ladies

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks some sort of je ne sais quoi

The plot: Blethyn's husband dies and leaves her with huge debts. She collaborates with the gardener, and the two of them hatch a smokin' plot to rescue her house and lifestyle from the ruthless debt collectors. The confusion: I found it really difficult to get into the story as I was distracted by the confusion as to where the is set. The ecletic mix of Irish, Scottish, London and Cornish accents are totally confusing. And that's just when the actors get the accents right! I was humorously reminded of Dawn French doing her "How err yooy" Irish accent on more than one occasion. The laughs: ... more

Advantages Advantages Refreshingly unbiased and quite amusing

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Naive

When her husband dies, formerly well-to-do Grace finds out that not only was he a crook but that he has also left her penniless and with massive debts. With eviction looming, she is at a loss about what to do until her pot-smoking gardener, Matthew, suggests that she puts her gardening skills to good use by growing and selling copious amounts of marijuana. The inhabitants of this sleepy Cornish village soon feel the effects. What's refreshing about this little film is its none-judgemental stance concerning those who choose to enjoy the effects of "de 'erb". Only Matthew's girlfriend Nicky ... more

Advantages Advantages Vert funny, well acted, gorgeous scenery

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

This film is a delight to watch. From the opening sequences to the end you are simply rivetted to this hillarious story, which is beautifully filmed and features tremendous actors. Starring the talented Brenda Blethyn, gorgeous Craig Ferguson and dopey Martin Clunes as the druggie GP ?!?!? Left impoverished by her swine of a husband, widow Grace, because of her financial straights and with help from her laconic gardener decides to start growing canabis. There are some incredibly funny scenes, for example when they try to rig up a generator for the lights in the greenhouse and every night the ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's British

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit far fetched

I really didn't think that this was my type of film. How would i like a film that invilved a middle age women growing pot for a living? Doesn't sound promicing does it, and yet i didn't see anyone leaving the cinema without a smile on their faces, and, isn't this generally the reason we go to the cinema! The plot is far fetched with the main character Blethyn(think i spelt it wrong, soz)losing her husband and discovering that she was also left with a massive debt to pay off of his. So, somehow, she manages to get together with her gardener and locals and they set up their own mass reproduction ... more

Advantages Advantages Unusual story and actors

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Little publicity

Saving Grace is a little-publicised film that came out quite recently, although it might have stopped showing now at the big cinemas because it's not a major crowd-puller. It's set in a cornish fishing village where a middle aged woman who has been recently widowed discovers that here husband has left her with loads of debts, and she has no way of repaying them. She just happens to be a fantastic gardener, and gets together with some local lads who are growing cannabis in the vicar's garden. together they start mass production and head off to london to sell it. Great fun ensues and you'll be ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very Funny

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow to start

When I first saw a preview of this film on a trailer it looked very good and a film I would make a point of wanting to go and see or get out on video. To my delight while travelling on a virgin flight to the states, they were showing it on board the flight! It took a while to get started with the usual reading of the will stuff but the humour came when they started to grow 'weed', a jokable, debatable subject that in the hands of someone not usual with it as in the case of the lady in this film, can be very hilarious. The best part, in my opinion, is where she is trying to offload it/find a ... more
