A Chinese Official’s daughter is kidnapped and held to ransom. Does not fully trust the American police force and calls in Hong Kong’s finest, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) to rescue her.

...out last weekend to see Rush Hour 2, having seen Rush Hour in the cinemas and thoroughly enjoyed it, we decided to see Rush Hour 2 which was a great film too.
Anyway, I decided to revisit the first film in its DVD form. Ahhh I bet you thought I was going to about Rush Hour 2 in the wrong category eh? This is my first review and I decided to look around the site reviewing others before I wrote my first review, and I saw that reviews in the wrong ... ...~~~~The Movie~~~~ Rush Hour stars the afore mentionned Jackie Chan, as Detective Inspector Li, a Hong Kong police officer and Chris Tucker, who plays Detective James Carter. Li comes to America after his good friend’s daughter is kidnapped, Chris Tucker is hired by the FBI to keeping Chan away from the case. As the chalk meets the cheese it is obvious we are in for one truly enjoyable ride. Carter and Li are then forced to battle a whole organization ...

Advantages: Good action, easy viewing Disadvantages: Formulaic
‘Rush Hour’ is an amusing diversion but not really much more, based on a formula that has been tried and tested in several police/comedy films down the years, probably most notably in the 1980s Schwarzenegger star vehicle ‘Red Heat’. The main theme of both films is remarkably similar – a policeman from a Communist country is sent to investigate a crime in the USA, he is paired with something of a renegade cop and encounters ... ...to the fore in a lasting partnership that transcends political and cultural boundaries. The plot of the film is not a straight rip-off of ‘Red Heat’ – times have changed and it is probably a safe bet that the producers were not allowed to portray the shiny, new China as some sort of Communist ogre for fear of damaging the burgeoning trade links between the Peoples’ Republic and the United States. The film touches on the return ...

...comes to a film like Rush Hour I immediate feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Excitement? Anticipation? Hardly - more like fear. The elements are all wrong and if ever a movie screamed 'waste of time', this is it. So we can ignore it and carry on watching 'decent' films (such as The Cannonball Run or anything with Sylvia Stallone in it) (apologies, I seem to have been momentarily possessed by the spirit of my own brother just then).
... ...it's easy to see that Rush Hour contains many, many cliche's - the earned respect, the brash US detective and the quiet Asian detective. Yawn, yawn, yawn, we've seen it all before. Now if a film ever sounded as though it was going to be a straight to video movie then this surely must be it. Hell, it's even got Jackie Chan in it, and we all know how niche-y his films tend to be. Do we detect some snobbery here or is there an almighty 'BUT' coming?

Advantages: Great action, excellent dialogue and 2 great leads Disadvantages: Some weak plot links and an only above average support cast
Rush Hour is a film that has finally seen the extraordinary Jackie Chan really crack Hollywood. After the direly acted, but awesomely choreographed efforts like Rumble In The Bronx, Mr. Nice Guy and First Strike, producers realised that what Chan needed was a quality talker alongside him to take away from Chan’s own language problems. Enter Chris Tucker, a motor mouth by any rights, and therefore the perfect foil for Chan.

The storyline is pretty standards stuff, kid is kidnapped, ransom demands are made and cops try to foil the plot with little help from the FBI. Seen it all before? Not like this, the action scenes here are unsurpassed for this kind of film. Jackie Chan has a mesmeric ability to design, choreograph and perform a fight scene. Each fight scene ...

...few but are speaced out. Rush Hour is centered around the plot instead the comedy and action is the most important.
Overall:3/5
Actors:
Chan and Tucker are the most important actors as well as the best is this film. Their isn't really any other famous actors because the film is based mostly on Chan and Tucker. Tucker is funny with his cocky mouth and is a very good quick talker, he is also involved in the action which is a helpful addition. Well ... ...he certainly knows how to fight the martial-arts is just quick and scary he is one of the best fighting actors in the world without a doubt. Other actors in the film: Christopher Penn, Tom Wilkinson, Elizabeth Pena.
Overall:5/5

Strangely, and against all my better feelings, I actually quite enjoyed this movie, despite its oh so bland predictability and lack of anything new. Lewis dave27 pestered me like mad to watch it when it came out on Sky and is still nagging me mercilessly to take him to see the sequel.

The slick humour combined with the excellent karate make these types of movies very watchable.

...having watched his latest movie, Rush Hour 2, I don’t think I will be on my own.
This film starts off on a fast pace and just keeps on going. The action and laughs come thick and fast and I would think that the latest cinematic pairing of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker have a way to go before they pass their sell by date.

Advantages: sometimes amusing, packed with extras Disadvantages: not too original
Rush Hour is one of those films that isn't very original. If it isn't done in the right way then it can end up as a very bad film. However with a few good elements it can be entertaining. Rush Hour is a mix of both. The film is made worthwhile by Jackie Chan's funny charm and very exciting martial arts scenes. However Chris Tucker is incredibly annoying and does the film no favours. The plot involves some chinese gangland thing with some stolen art. ... ...1 dvd output. Rush Hour is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. The transfer is flawless with little sign of dirt or grain. The colours are all soild. I dare you to find any faults. As for the sound well there are Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 mixes. For an action film this is exactly what you'd expect-very lively throughout with clear dialogue and a good use of score. The extras are the real reason to take a look at the dvd. Advantages: Good original to follow on from Disadvantages: Poor plot and low on laughs
Rush Hour 2
Join Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker for a second rush as they trade places for the start of the second movie. This time round Tucker finds himself as the fish out of water as he visits Hong Kong for a holiday but gets dragged into Chan’s investigation of the bombing of the American Embassy by the Triads.
In summary the plot is paper thin (as expected) but what is disappointing is the lack of laughs. The entire character interaction ... ...not hang together here. There are a few laughs but this movie will not have you rolling around in the isles as the first one did. The best laughs are reserved for the f**k-up real showed during the final credits and some of these looked somewhat contrived.
It looks to me that the budget was spent on the two stars and not enough on what they actually did or said.

'Rush Hour' is just one of those films I really wanted to hate. What's this? An action comedy featuring mismatched cops, and those mismatched cops are played by Jackie Chan and motor mouth Chris Tucker? Give it a rest!
Anyone, like me, expecting a pale rip off of either '48hrs' or 'Lethal Weapon' will be pleasantly disappointed. Once the plot is dealt with - something to do with a kidnapped kid, I think - and you latch on to the 'Rush Hour' vibe, ... ...about this movie is that it never pretends to be a serious film. It's not concerned with being nominated for Academy Awards, or being compared to 'Citizen Kane'...it's sole purpose is to entertain it's audience. It might be rubbish, but if a film's intentions are as wholesome as that, who needs 'Citizen Kane'?
As I've hinted at earlier, plot doesn't matter. Jackie Chan plays some Hong Kong cop sent to L.A to track down a politician's missing daughter. ...
