Advantages: Julia Roberts and her 'million watt smile', light charming fluff Disadvantages: predictable
...on to the film.
Runaway Bride was released in 1999, and carried with it a cloud of hype. After almost ten years, the stars (Julia Roberts and Richard Gere) and director (Garry Marshall) of Pretty Woman were to make another (romantic comedy) film together. Oh, and just ‘cos I find this sort of trivia quite interesting, note that this time round, Julia got top billing over Richard. Tells a story or two, doesn’t it?!
First point to notice ... ...latter category this time.
Runaway Bride starts off by showing us just that: Julia Roberts, in full wedding outfit, running – or rather riding – away from her groom. It turns out that this is the third man she’s left at the altar, but that still hasn’t put her off: number four is about to chance his luck. With another actress, you might have been left wondering why anyone would take the risk, but Julia is really lovely, and ...

...son to great grandmother. The Runaway Bride had a lot to live up to. Sadly, having seem it twice, it just seems to be running on a different track. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are back, but the bittersweeteness has been lost to a whole load of smultz.
The plot revolves around the central character of Maggie Carpenter (Roberts), a small town gal who just cannot say no when someone preposes, but gets the jitters and bolts the wrong way up the aisle ... ...The problem with the Runaway Bride is that it is so contrived, too obvious, and not a patch on Pretty Woman. That is its major flaw, it is simple film, with a simple plot and simple characters, trying to be compared with something that was unconventional, beautifully written and well crafted. As a 1950s style/thin plot film in its own right, Runaway Bride caters for its target audience (grannies who love a good, but simple love story). As a sequel ...

...is where the idea for Runaway Bride was born. Garry Marshall, director of Pretty Woman was pleased to be working with the lead actors from Pretty Woman, and there is also the familiar face of Hector Elizondo, who played the hotel manager in 1990. Joan Cusack appears as the best friend Peggy, and puts in a very under par performance, but to be fair, she was not given much to work with. I am sorry to say that this film is not a patch on Pretty Woman, ... ...these actors on screen together again, and the concentration and effort was put more into advertising the return of Gere and Roberts, rather than creating an exciting and inspiring story. The story is that Maggie Carpenter(Roberts) is a commitment phobic woman who has left 3 fiance's standing at the altar after she could not go through with the wedding. She is brought to Ike Gram's (Gere) attention by a man he meets in a bar (who turns out to be ...

Advantages: good plot, great actors, great scenery, no violence or bad language Disadvantages: maybe a bit unbelievable in some places, not enough features on DVD but it was rented so I think it could have been abridged for renting purposes in terms of DVD features and menus
On its cinema release, Runaway Bride was greatly publicised as the first reunion of actors Richard Gere and Julia Roberts since Pretty Woman. And together their great onscreen rapport brought this film to life! True its not like Pretty Woman but the characters and storyline are very different!

It makes Runaway Bride suitable for family viewing, although children might not follow the all-talk plot. Personally I loved this film to pieces. It's innocent, heartwarming and funny and I watched it over and over again! I recommend you see it at least once. ...

Advantages: You know what to expect, and the two stars do their thing as well as they ever did Disadvantages: You get exactly what you expect. Too predictable.
Runaway Bride is to Pretty Woman what You've Got Mail was to Sleepless In Seattle. That is, it reunites its two leading stars with the same director, only the story and characters are unconnected to the previous, hugely-sucessful project. Pretty Woman was one of the highest-grossing films of 1990, and launched Julia Roberts into the realms of stardom while kick-starting Richard Gere's faltering career in the process. Ten years on, here they are again....but ... ...On the evidence of Runaway Bride, the answer would have to be.....maybe. Or maybe not. For this is an often charming romantic comedy which just about finds the right formula necessary to pull off such a contrived concept. Indeed, formula is the key here. Everything follows the usual cliched path towards the eventual conclusion, making sure it presses all the required buttons to move itself along. Gere plays a New York columnist famous for his disparaging ...

After watching this film for a second time at the weekend I felt it my nessesity to write an opinion on it. This film came out in cinemas at the beginnnig of summer '1999'. (July 30) I went with my friend to see it as an 'end of school' summer treat! ~ We were highly entertained and thought the movie was great. THE PLOT
The whole storyline is based on two main people, firstly Ike Graham who is acted by Richard Gere, he is a New York newspaper columnist ... ...and his ex-wife is his boss!!! Taking himself off down to his local watering hole to "brainstorm," Ike hears about a young woman in rural Maryland named Maggie, who is acted by Julia Roberts who, apparently, loves being engaged, but who has very cold feet about getting married. Intrigued, Ike composes a column about Maggie, beginning a chain of events which leads him to Hale, Maryland, her hometown. Maggie Carpenter also has a problem, Ike Graham. ...

The three amigos Gere, Roberts and director Garry Marshall team up again after the success of the fantastic 'Pretty Woman' to bring you another great movie. Julia Roberts plays the 'Runaway Bride', a woman who has a habit of leaving her fiances standing at the altar and running out of the church before they can complete the vows. Richard Gere plays a reporter at a low ebb who latches onto this story as a bid to save his career. Runaway bride
I am writing a review on the brilliant comedy Runaway Bride starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
The Film Itself
A journalist played by Richard Gere, trying to get a story starts talking to a man in a bar, he tells him of a woman who ditches men at the alter. She likes to get them all dressed up as grooms before dumping them.
So… he’s got a story.
He writes a story based on the facts the man in the bar gave him, of how she ... ...out their heart and dumps them on their wedding day before their wedding.
However, the woman - Maggie Carpenter, he writes about finds out about the story and reports him to his editor, as there were numerous mistakes in his story.
The journalist gets fired and wants to find out the full truth so off he goes to the hometown of the woman Hail Maryland to meet the woman.
Julia Roberts Plays Maggie Carpenter, the woman who had got a big reputation ...

Runaway Bride...what a movie!! When I first saw it at the cinema, I thought that Pretty Woman was a lot better. But I rent it since that time, and I'M IN LOVE with that movie! It is so sweet, you move in a universe of attraction and desire. It shows a great face of life, and Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are the most beautiful couple of Hollywood! Advantages: none Disadvantages: blatent cash in on pretty woman
I cannot bring myself to write too much about this film, but please for the love of god avoid it if you can. This was a very poor attempt to cash in on the pairing of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere from Pretty Woman ( which incidentally is a great film), which really goes down in flames. The basic story is that Julia is a woman that has a habit of walking out on her fiance's at the alter and Richard is a reporter sent to cover her latest wedding. ... ...each other etc, etc... Don't ask me what happens at the end because i did not get that far and even my wife (who is a major Julia and richard fan) cannot remember as she was dozing off towards that point. This film is only for Die hard Julia Roberts and/or Richard Gere fans and even then you it would take some guts to stick it out. ...

...about Maggie Carpenter being a runaway bride he decided to go and investigate further. He follows her through right up until the wedding to see what will happen. I'm not going to tell you anymore of what transpires as it would ruin the movie.
Runaway Bride was supposed to be the next stunning film by Gere, Roberts and Marshall (the director). Their first flm as a Trio was the extremely popular Pretty Woman and this was supposed to be just as good. ... ...forward to this, especially after seeing Pretty Woman several tmes. However, I was a little disappointed. While the story line is very good, although rather unbelievable at times, I did't really find it very funny. The romance was there but only in little bits.
I can't fault the acting though as Roberts and Gere both played their respective rolls with a lot of charisma. Infact, for me, the acting was the only thing that made this film watchable.

...and not tire of. Sadly, Runaway Bride, does not hit quite the same mark.
The story is based on Ike (Richard Gere) and Maggie (Julia Robers). Ike is a journalist who needs a good story to try and keep his column. He finds that story when told about Maggie, a commitment phobic who is planning to get married again. He tracks her down, aiming to write about her. She, of course, detests him, but gradually begins to like him. I'm sure everyone reading ... ...Although the story is a 'typical romantic comedy' and we all know how its going to end before it starts, I don't think that is always a bad thing (I like a lot of typical rom coms!!) but this film definately lacks something. Weirdly, the two central characters seem to lack chemistry and Gere seems unbelievable as Ike. Although not given a big part, Joan Cusack acts really well and adds a lot of comedy to the film.
Ultimately, I think it is worth ...
