Advantages: Intersting , entertaining , moving ,compelling , great believable characters Disadvantages: Man's inhumanity to man , production may seem a little dated now
...faithfully watching every episode of Roots when it was first broadcast on television back in the 1970s . At that time we did not have the luxury of a video , come to think of it I am sure we still had a black and white only television . Both my Hubby and myself got so caught up in the tale we never missed an episode . We eagerly sat down to watch the final episode and disaster . Relatives decided to visit for the evening . Unusually for us we tried ... ...THE BACKGROUND TO ROOTS
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Roots was the result of author Alex Haleys attempts to trace his family history . As a black African he knew that one of his ancestors had been snatched from Africa as a young man and transported to America as part of the slave trade .This African slave had tried in vain to hang to part of his identity . In doing so he had constantly fought a battle to gain ...

Advantages: Compulsive viewing, you will want to watch it all at once Disadvantages: Compulsive viewing and 9 hours long.
Roots was first shown in 1977, and qualifies as one of those programmes that I remember enjoying years ago but cannot remember much about, to be honest I remembered the names of Kunta Kinte and Chicken George and the fact that Kunta Kinte had his toes cut off and Chicken George had a feather in his hat. I therefore bought it with a hope that I would enjoy it as much as I believed I would for many years. I was not wrong this DVD contains the entirety ... ...less than two days.
Roots the mini-series was based on the book of the same name by Alex Hailey, spanning four generations of slaves from capture by slave traders in Africa to emancipation. Roots of its time, remember this was over a quarter of a century ago was ground-breaking, confronting America's slave owning past and from a black perspective. It is possible to see the fears of the network producers in the billing with high profile being given ...

Advantages: great series for all ages, good to learn about american history Disadvantages: its really long, and addictive so you cant stop watching
This is a story about American slavery in the 1700's-1800's. about one family's trials and tribulations. This review has been the hardest I have had to write because there is so much information it's hard to sort out what is the best to put down.
The story starts in Africa with the birth of a baby boy Kunta Kinte. you follow is life for a few years where he meets a girl called Fanta while out training to be a Mandinka warrior he was kidnapped by ... ...the southern states of America. He had never seen the sea before and he rallied the men of other tribes whilst on the boat and they try but fail to over power the slavers. While on deck he sees Fanta, she has been raped and beaten, she is no longer the same girl he fell in love with.
When they get to America Kunta is sold off to a plantation and is renamed Toby. It is an older slaves job, his one ally fiddler, to teach him English and the ways of ...

Advantages: comprehensive serial on early American Slave problems Disadvantages: you should set aside a lot of time as you will want to watch it all at once
This is something else..Over 9 hours of classic television history, from 1976/77.
This series contains a cast to drool over, and is faithfully translated on to DVD from the TV series, and is massively better than the early VHS release.
This study of Slavery as seen through the eyes of one family throughout the generations is excellent viewing and for 3 DVDs containing over 9 hours of brilliant imagery, this is a must for any serious movie collector.
... ...LeVar Burton), we are treated to views of slavery too brutal and yet realistic, to ignore.
With a cast containing such notaries as, Edward Asner, Cicely Tyson, John Amos, Lorne Greene, Sandy Duncan, Lloyd Bridges, Louis Gossett Jnr and Ben Vereen to name just a few, this is a blockbuster in every sense.
The reproduction of the series on DVD is excellent and both picture and sound settings are variable enough to keep the most professional enthuisiast ...

Advantages: great film Disadvantages: sad but keeps you watching
I absolutly loved this film! I was actually ashamed to be white! In my generation racism isn't anywhere near as bad as it was in those days. But it makes you realise how racism affects people. I thought it was horrible the way they we're kidnapped from africa and sold of as slaves to white fokes. They were physically, mentally and sexually abused. This film made me cry so much but also kept me on the edge of my seat! I really wanted the slaves to ...
