...genre. Along with The Terminator, Robocop is considered to be one of the most definitive movies of Cyberpunk, a subgenre of Science Fiction; an exploration of man with machine. Paul Verhoeven's film is brutally violent, funny, and thought provocative. A classic.
It's a scary thought living in the future. "Old Detroit", as it's called, is all about Capitalism and the media, with little regard for the people's lives. The Police Department has become ...

Advantages: Good Effects, fun, voilent, blood, gore Disadvantages: 80's clothes, hair styles, etc
...80's you have to remember Robocop as one of the best action/sci-fi films to come from that era, it had great special effects for the time and quite a humourous script. The story starts by introducing us to Murphy (Peter Weller), an experienced police officer who has just been transfered to the dangerous and crime filled streets of Detroit. While patroling the streets of Detroit in his car with his new partner Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) they receive ...

...action flicks with cool characters. Robocop is that as well but has much more going on underneath the surface.
Thanks to Director Paul Verhoven, this is a film that acts as part action, part comedy and 100% satire. Peter Weller stars as Alex Murphy, a cop who relocates to Detroit. The city is in the midst of crime, most of it stemming from arch criminal and all round bad guy Clarence Boddicker. One day Murphy and his new partner Lewis (Nancy Allen) ...

Advantages: A classic piece of sci-fi - still relevant after almost 15 years, with little of its impact faded by time Disadvantages: Extremely voilent (perhaps too much so for some), the distinctly 80s feel
...of the other partcipants in RoboCop are there to serve the needs of the story, with little interest given to their deeper personality traits or motives. They are stereotypical movie characters, and in this case it is not a problem. Only Nancy Allen - as Murphy's partner Lewis - is given the scope to invest anything approaching emotions or heart. Even then, it's not a lot to work with, but she gets more out of the role than the script deserved. Granted, ...

...had the double bill of Robocop 1 & 2 on video since before I was 10 and I seriously doubt there's a person on this planet that has watched either of the film's more than my good self. I pretty much know the script off by heart I've seen it that many times, for me it just doesn't get much better than this even know so imagine what it was like when I was an ickle boy, seeing all that gore and robot's was my equivilent to blue smartie's. Advantages: A good balance of action and plot. Great effects. Good performances. Disadvantages: Very violent
Paul Verhoeven's Robocop had a certain distinction whilst I was at college, namely that it was probably the film most mentioned as reference by my film-studies class. This was mainly due in no small part to my own devotion to the film at the time.
From the outside it seems to be pretty much a standard Science-Fiction actioneer, Cop gunned down in the line of duty, rebuilt to take bloody and gruesome revenge. The thing is though that the film quietly ...

...eighties starring Peter Weller as RoboCop and is directed by the masterful Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man).
The story is set in the near future of a very capitalist America. OCP (Omni Comsumer Products) is a multi billion dollar corporation that arguably owns the country. In the city city of Detroit, there is a major crime wave in progress. The situation has gotten so bad that Security Concepts of OCP has practically ...

...on a bit now, but Robocop is still one of the best sc-fi films in a long while. Based in a pretty standard sort of near-future, corporate society setting, this film just smacks of 80s consumerism. Just look at the central premise of the film; huge corporation virtually owns the city of Detroit, and sees the employees as their posessions to be done with as they like.
The film's plot is a pretty standard sort of revenge film, with a bit of a technological ...

He is worth dozens of officers on his own and goes around solving crimes, he then goes on to take on the dealers of a massive drug and in doing so he discovers corruption and creates a huge bodycount. Advantages: Good sci-fi yarn with plenty of action Disadvantages:
Robocop is in some ways rather a prescient film, for at the time it was made (pre-1989) there were few (if any) films which featured corporations as the bad guy. As such, in Robocop's world we learn of the corporation, itself corrupt, which controls everything in a corrupt city through its law enforcement operations. Its R+D department produces variations on the idea of the "Robocop" - a cop that doesn't go on strike asking for higher pay or longer ...

Advantages: Great movie and good plot Disadvantages: Looks dated these days
Robocop is a near-classic movie about a fictional scenario where Detroit is effectively controlled/owned by a corporation known as OCP or Omni-Consumer Products. The real problem with the city of Detroit is the skyrocketing crime rate and OCP wants to transform the whole city by rebuilding it and making it into Delta City. To do this they need to get the crime rate under control. 2nd in command at OCP, Dick Jones, has an idea involving large Enforcement ...

Advantages: Intelligent and witty Disadvantages: Violent
Robocop is a wonderful science fiction adventure film. Be warned though, it's also quite violent and bloody.
Peter Weller stars as Frankenstein's bobby, stitched together with wires and microchips after being convincingly killed by a gang of psychos. Robocop soon proves his worth as the ultimate law-enforcement machine, with one (somewhat predictable) flaw - he can't shake the memories of his previous life as a human being, and his violent "death".
