RoboCop for the Future

AdvantagesGreat action scenes, strong writing

DisadvantagesJerky effects for the ED-209

"...able to fit in the RoboCop suit a little easier. The film has been remade - or rebooted as they like to call it these days - with Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman in the lead role, and a supporting cast of Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson. Miguel Ferrer, who plays OCP executive Bob Morton, also has a role in the reboot, though a different one. "RoboCop" raked in over $53m at the Box Office and had many spin-offs, including two sequels. ..." Read review

Verhoven's American Masterpiece!

AdvantagesA violent and satirical thriller with a surprising emotional punch.

DisadvantagesLooks a little dated now, and some of the action sequences drag.

"...a bit generic, as when Robocop storms a cocaine lab, but we are also treated to some wonderful moments, from Murphy's gut-wrenching last few seconds; a POV sequence intercut with flashbacks as Murphy lays dying on a operating room table; Robocop's visit to his old house, where he seems to walk through the flashbacks. I'm sure everyone has their favourite "Robocop" moments and quotes, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend giving it another visit if you ..." Read review

Primary objective 4: classified!

AdvantagesGreat concept; direction; acting

DisadvantagesHas dated somewhat; overly violent

"...a chance to introduce his RoboCop programme, designed to put a humnoid cyborg onto the streets to uphold the law. Now all he needs is a subject...... Meanwhile, freshly transferred cop James Murphy (Peter Weller - I keep wanting to say Paul!!) teams up with hardnosed female cop Anne Lewis (Nancy Murphy) to patrol the streets. When he is brutally and violently shot and left for dead, Morton's team use him as the test case for the programme, and ..." Read review

Meet Robocop Review with images

AdvantagesEntertaining, Well directed and suprisingly complex

DisadvantagesShameful sequels and franchise

"...All goes well at first. Robocop stops every sleazeball he encounters with deadly, piercing, and sometimes gruesome accuracy. But there are forces on the street, and within Security Concepts itself, that will stop at nothing to see this super cyborg violently eliminated... Prepare yourself for non-stop action and adventure in one of the most explosive sci-fi stories you'll ever witness: Robocop." There is no doubt that Robocop sits up there amongst ..." Read review

Your Move, Creep.

AdvantagesOne the best Sci-Fi movies ever made. Period.

DisadvantagesThe sequels.

"...arm yourself with the entire RoboCop trilogy on a spanking new DVD collection, which emphatically consigns the previous Criterion Edition to the scrapheap. It comes with all the extra features of the Criterion disc including a commentary track from controversial director Paul Verhoeven and writer Ed Neumier, the trailers, storyboards and a 'Shooting RoboCop' feature, plus you also get a brand new documentary on the making of Robo, a handful of deleted ..." Robocop DVD Review

AdvantagesCharacters, Intelligence, Humour, Plot.S

DisadvantagesStop-Start Animation is a little dated by today's standards.

"...genre. Along with The Terminator, Robocop is considered to be one of the most definitive movies of Cyberpunk, a subgenre of Science Fiction; an exploration of man with machine. Paul Verhoeven's film is brutally violent, funny, and thought provocative. A classic. It's a scary thought living in the future. "Old Detroit", as it's called, is all about Capitalism and the media, with little regard for the people's lives. The Police Department has become ..." Read review

Somewhere there is a crime happening.

AdvantagesGood Effects, fun, voilent, blood, gore

Disadvantages80's clothes, hair styles, etc

"...80's you have to remember Robocop as one of the best action/sci-fi films to come from that era, it had great special effects for the time and quite a humourous script. The story starts by introducing us to Murphy (Peter Weller), an experienced police officer who has just been transfered to the dangerous and crime filled streets of Detroit. While patroling the streets of Detroit in his car with his new partner Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) they receive ..." Read review

The Cop with Two Malfunctions

AdvantagesGreat First Film, Good Extras, Directors Cut

DisadvantagesYou have to have the sequels, not seamless branching

"...action flicks with cool characters. Robocop is that as well but has much more going on underneath the surface. Thanks to Director Paul Verhoven, this is a film that acts as part action, part comedy and 100% satire. Peter Weller stars as Alex Murphy, a cop who relocates to Detroit. The city is in the midst of crime, most of it stemming from arch criminal and all round bad guy Clarence Boddicker. One day Murphy and his new partner Lewis (Nancy Allen) ..." Read review

You Have 20 Seconds To Comply

AdvantagesA classic piece of sci-fi - still relevant after almost 15 years, with little of its impact faded by time

DisadvantagesExtremely voilent (perhaps too much so for some), the distinctly 80s feel

"...of the other partcipants in RoboCop are there to serve the needs of the story, with little interest given to their deeper personality traits or motives. They are stereotypical movie characters, and in this case it is not a problem. Only Nancy Allen - as Murphy's partner Lewis - is given the scope to invest anything approaching emotions or heart. Even then, it's not a lot to work with, but she gets more out of the role than the script deserved. Granted, ..." Read review

I'll Buy That For A Dollar

AdvantagesAction, Acting & Robocops.

Disadvantagesgiven a bad name by its graphic scenes.

"...had the double bill of Robocop 1 & 2 on video since before I was 10 and I seriously doubt there's a person on this planet that has watched either of the film's more than my good self. I pretty much know the script off by heart I've seen it that many times, for me it just doesn't get much better than this even know so imagine what it was like when I was an ickle boy, seeing all that gore and robot's was my equivilent to blue smartie's. I watched it ..." Read review

A misjudged, excellent film

AdvantagesA classic - touching, shocking, funny, - a different kind of action movie.

DisadvantagesA bit too violent for some - and lots of swearing.

"...the press love him and Robocop seems to be working well. However, the Murphy part of Robocop begins to remember his wife and son and keeps having flashbaacks of them and even visiting his former home. Robocop's creator Bob Morton is killed by Clarence Boddicker and through this Robocop discovers a link between Clarence's gang and Dick Jones, the creator of the corrupt, unused cop robot Ed 209. Due to directives instilled in his programming, Robocop ..." Read review

Directive 5 - Watch and Enjoy

AdvantagesA good balance of action and plot. Great effects. Good performances.

DisadvantagesVery violent

"Paul Verhoeven's Robocop had a certain distinction whilst I was at college, namely that it was probably the film most mentioned as reference by my film-studies class. This was mainly due in no small part to my own devotion to the film at the time. From the outside it seems to be pretty much a standard Science-Fiction actioneer, Cop gunned down in the line of duty, rebuilt to take bloody and gruesome revenge. The thing is though that the film quietly ..." Read review

Dead or alive, you're coming with me...

AdvantagesViolent, a believable future

DisadvantagesToo violent for some to stomach

"...eighties starring Peter Weller as RoboCop and is directed by the masterful Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man). The story is set in the near future of a very capitalist America. OCP (Omni Comsumer Products) is a multi billion dollar corporation that arguably owns the country. In the city city of Detroit, there is a major crime wave in progress. The situation has gotten so bad that Security Concepts of OCP has practically ..." Read review

Best of the series by a long way

AdvantagesOne of the best sco-fi films ever, amazing special effects

DisadvantagesDefinitely not for people with a weak stomach!

"...on a bit now, but Robocop is still one of the best sc-fi films in a long while. Based in a pretty standard sort of near-future, corporate society setting, this film just smacks of 80s consumerism. Just look at the central premise of the film; huge corporation virtually owns the city of Detroit, and sees the employees as their posessions to be done with as they like. The film's plot is a pretty standard sort of revenge film, with a bit of a technological ..." Read review
