...arm yourself with the entire RoboCop trilogy on a spanking new DVD collection, which emphatically consigns the previous Criterion Edition to the scrapheap. It comes with all the extra features of the Criterion disc including a commentary track from controversial director Paul Verhoeven and writer Ed Neumier, the trailers, storyboards and a 'Shooting RoboCop' feature, plus you also get a brand new documentary on the making of Robo, a handful of deleted ... ...Back in 1987, RoboCop was the film that every teenage boy wanted to see, but was never allowed to because, we were told, it was for grown-ups. However, when a film has an invincible, metal guy stomping around, blowing away villainous scum with a really big gun, wild stallions wouldn't keep most bloodthirsty adolescents away and most of us somehow managed to see it anyway. But don't let the comic-book 'blast-the-bad-guys-kids' philosophy fool you, ...

Paul Verhoeven's film is brutally violent, funny, and thought provocative. A classic. It's a scary thought living in the future. ...80's you have to remember Robocop as one of the best action/sci-fi films to come from that era, it had great special effects for the time and quite a humourous script. ...action flicks with cool characters. Robocop is that as well but has much more going on underneath the surface. Thanks to Director Paul Verhoven, this is a film that acts as part action, part comedy and 100% satire. Peter Weller stars as Alex Murphy, a cop who relocates to Detroit. The city is in the midst of crime, most of it stemming from arch criminal and all round bad guy Clarence Boddicker. One day Murphy and his new partner Lewis (Nancy Allen) ... ...name - Robocop. However soon submerged memeories of Murphy's past come to haunt Robocop and what was once a machine soo rediscovers some human elements. Needless to say the memory of being killed by Boddicker and his gang means it's bad news for Boddicker. Some may see Robocop as nothing more than mindless violence. ...of the other partcipants in RoboCop are there to serve the needs of the story, with little interest given to their deeper personality traits or motives. They are stereotypical movie characters, and in this case it is not a problem. Only Nancy Allen - as Murphy's partner Lewis - is given the scope to invest anything approaching emotions or heart. Advantages: A good balance of action and plot. Great effects. Good performances. Disadvantages: Very violent
Paul Verhoeven's Robocop had a certain distinction whilst I was at college, namely that it was probably the film most mentioned as reference by my film-studies class. This was mainly due in no small part to my own devotion to the film at the time.

The thing is though that the film quietly ... ...suface story, at it's heart Robocop is a story of humanity (Lost and found you might say). Murphy's realisation about who he is (was) and what he has become is deftly handled, and Peter Weller's portrayal of man and machine is at once both eerily cold and endearingly human.
The special effects are good, and still hold up well today, especially the bipedal Enforcement Droid which OCP are also trying to foist on an unsuspecting world.

...on a bit now, but Robocop is still one of the best sc-fi films in a long while. Based in a pretty standard sort of near-future, corporate society setting, this film just smacks of 80s consumerism. Just look at the central premise of the film; huge corporation virtually owns the city of Detroit, and sees the employees as their posessions to be done with as they like.

The fact that Robocop is a virtually indestructible machine does not go unnoticed, as various people unload enough munitions to level a small country at him. But the best thing is the special effects. Robocop was probably one of the last real big-budget ...

Advantages: Good sci-fi yarn with plenty of action Disadvantages:
Robocop is in some ways rather a prescient film, for at the time it was made (pre-1989) there were few (if any) films which featured corporations as the bad guy. As such, in Robocop's world we learn of the corporation, itself corrupt, which controls everything in a corrupt city through its law enforcement operations. Its R+D department produces variations on the idea of the "Robocop" - a cop that doesn't go on strike asking for higher pay or longer ... ...and sometimes all at once. Robocop becomes that Everyman Hero we see in so many films - a semi-Jesus figure who is the only one who can save the world (or in this case, L.A., which to Hollywood is often the same thing). All in all, it combines a good story, style and action, as well as a few very satisfying moments when machines turn on their evil creators. ...

Robocop is a near-classic movie about a fictional scenario where Detroit is effectively controlled/owned by a corporation known as OCP or Omni-Consumer Products. To do this they need to get the crime rate under control. 2nd in command at OCP, Dick Jones, has an idea involving large Enforcement ...

Advantages: Intelligent and witty Disadvantages: Violent
Robocop is a wonderful science fiction adventure film. Be warned though, it's also quite violent and bloody.
Peter Weller stars as Frankenstein's bobby, stitched together with wires and microchips after being convincingly killed by a gang of psychos. Robocop soon proves his worth as the ultimate law-enforcement machine, with one (somewhat predictable) flaw - he can't shake the memories of his previous life as a human being, and his violent "death".
... ...other shoot-em-up sf movies is the sheer wit that Paul Verhoeven brings to it. The film is interspersed with news footage and adverts of "Robocop"'s future society, showing exactly the kind of society we're headed for - everything, even heart surgery, has become a commodity, children play games based on nuclear war, and the suits who run the privatised police force are motivated entirely by sex, drugs and money - leaving space for Verhoeven to imply ...
