I must admit to approaching this movie with a certain degree of trepidation, for I could not see how they could possible do justice to the novel in two hours. Sadly, the film failed to cast any of my doubts aside. It is a rushed adaptation, with a seemingly thrown together script. Pride and prejudice has been adapted so many times it was hard to see what need there was for yet another, but loving the book I was happy to give this one a chance. I don't want to say it wasn't good, it just wasn't anything special. I didn't warm to Matthew Mcfayden as Darcy, and didn't really see why Lizzie would have- the exchanges between the two of them lost in the need to explain the actions of secondary characters. As someone teaching this book to students I was really pleased to find a version which was short enough to show in class and pretty close to the original text. However I found the two lead actors (playing Elizabeth B and Darcy) very far from the convincing - Darcy (Macfadyen) lacked sparkle and Elizabeth (Knightley) lacked strength. What made me most shocked was the kissing! There is NO kissing in Austen... ever... and that's what makes her so wonderful ...
