...up that easily?
The Predator is a fantastic example of its genre and is arguably the inspiration for the 'Slasher' genre where a superior evil being kills off its victims one by one. This film however deals with that concept much better than any teen horror. This is a film where you get to see big guys with guns blowing s**t up. Arnie with his M16 and Grenade Launcher combo (reminds me of his role as John Matrix in "Commando"), Jesse Ventura ("The ... ...expertly, saving the match bewteen Predator and Arnie at the end and no sooner. He also doesn't waste time with unnecessary character development that doesn't accelerate the storyline or add to it. All you need to know is that there is some kind of alien in the jungle and the Commandos are under threat, no more, no less.
Sountrack is synthesised (a true product of the eighties) especially the main theme tune of the film. Der der der de de der, der ...

Predator (1987)
Dir: John McTiernan Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, Kevin Peter Hall
For me, Predator is one of Arnie's finer action movies, along with Commando and Total Recall that exemplify the genre. Minus the special effects of later films, it still matches them for action and visceral thrills. Predator is a blend of macho and science fiction. With Die Hard director John McTiernan at the helm it is ... ...troop fall prey to the Predator until just he is left. A life and death jungle struggle ensues..
You can almost sense the testosterone seeping through the screen during the 106 minutes run time of this film. This was one of Arnold Schwarzeneggers first major features and he plays the role of Dutch straight pretty much throughout. No wisecracking, monotone one man army here, Arnie displays a full range with emotions like fear and worry in this movie: ...

Advantages: Script, action, sound fx, special fx, direction Disadvantages: too much macho posturing, weakish ending.
...thrills in equal measure.
Predator is no more than "Alien" versus "Rambo" for a rumble in the jungle. This could quite easily have been a Z-rated movie ending up on the video shelf with not even a fanfare to cheer it along. However, this film rises above the dross because of three solid elements - Director, John McTiernan (of Die Hard fame); Jim & John Thomas writing a very tight screenplay. And of course a testerone-filled film like this wouldn't ... ...weigh it down. Predator is an action fans dream. It's so masculine & proud of itself you'd be pushed to find a subtle moment throughout. The commandos are all muscular types with 6-pack chests and rippling muscles, sharp one-liners and sweaty brows.
Arnie acts like Arnie always acts....but for a change this kind of scenario & savage environment suits him down to the ground, so we can ignore his male posturing and chewing of huge cigars while keeping ...

Advantages: Excellent special effects which wouldn't be out of place today Disadvantages: none
John Mctiernan is the director of this brilliant action packed blockbuster. If you were to combine Alien and Rambo with a bit of Vietnam into one film this is what you would get.
After being recruited by the CIA Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of US Commandos to the center of the South American Jungle where they have been assigned to rescue some milatry hostages held by Guerilla fighters. Instead of what would be a fairly straight foward ... ...hanging from trees and realise they are fighting a much more sinister force. They manage to pick up a women who had hid from the attack and begins to tell them off the evil creature as it follows them through the woods and begins to pick them off one by one in deadly style for sport. Soon Arnie finds himself at battle with a hideous alien creature that is armed with high tech gadgets and wearing a spacesuit which can make him invisable.

A simply stupendous film with non-stop action, a memorable score, some genuinely scary moments and big Arnie with a machine gun!! Not to forget the barrage of sharp one liners that perforate every Arnie movie, some excellent casting with the 'team' and some impressive direction from John McTiernan.
Arnie and his 'rescue team' are sent into the Central American jungle to ostensibly retrieve a downed helicopter and its political passengers, held captive ... ...As the team discover to their cost, they are not exactly alone. Someone or something is in the jungle with them. They cannot see it, they cannot hear it and despite some heavy machine guns, they apparently cannot kill it either. It soon becomes a fatal chase as Arnie attempts to lead his team out of the jungle to safety.
This film is a classic. It grabs your attention immediately (don't miss the first few seconds!) and doesn't let go, entwining ...

Advantages: Everythign you could ask for in an action flick Disadvantages: Some puritans could criticise the acting
Wow! I am not exaggerating to say i have seen this film well over a hundred times. Why? Well, it gives so much and asks so little!
It draws you in, and if you're into the plot, it intrigues you, if not, it's just as enjoyable putting your brain into neutral.
From watching it so many times, i know every aspect well, but will not ruin the ending for you.
So, to set the scene; a group of highly-skilled and macho mercenaries are tricked into going ... ...a 'rescue operation'.
The mercenaries include a comms. expert (Hawkins), a tracking expert (Mac), an explosives expert (Poncho), a fearless, highly spiritual soldier of Indian origin, also a navigation and tracking expert (Billy), the Leader of the Group, expert in attacking formations and tactics (Dutch) played by Schwarzenegger, and all-round bad-ass soldier Jesse 'the body' Ventura (Blane) - weapon of choice; A Gatling gun! The realisation that I know this film line by line has brought me to the solid conclusion that I am well qualified to write about it! In this, a bulging and well-oiled Arnie, plays Dutch, the Major of an elite yet loveable group of rogues who are sent on a mission to investigate the disappearance of a Helicopter (and the president-like-person who was in it) in a South-American Rainforest-type location. It turns out that this wasn’t a routine mission ... ...(not like the lovely wide eyed, silver ones, we’re used to) who has taken up the hobby of skinning people alive and nicking their skulls. As his crew get picked off one by one (with some rather fantastic, if not gross, make up jobs), Arnie decides to kick some alien-ass. This builds up to tension-filled ending, where Arnie, single-handedly constructs a camp of traps and tunnels to lure the alien to its death. Full of great Arnie one-liners, this ...

...of the film when the predator mercilessly hunts down the mercenaries.
The predator itself is very efficient in its killing of the other lesser characters, but it meets its match in Arnie, who has to learn to fight it without the use of guns. The fist fight at the end is a good scene, giving Arnie one of his more memorable one-liners.
Ok, so the acting is not great, (the chap in the predator costume is the least wooden) but this film is a pretty ...
Advantages: Typical Arnie. Disadvantages: Not much storyline.
The plot of this movie is really simple. An alien comes down to earth to hunt people for sport and ot collect trophies. Thats almost it! Add Arnold Schwarzenegger and a double crossed mercenary and you have all the makings of a real good action movie. And yes, it is a good one too. Theres plenty of muscle, explosions and bodies. The performances are what you would expect from a John McTiernan movie with Arnie being your stock action hero goodie type. ...
The original Predator film was first released in the UK in 1988 and was a great event at the time.

...though you know who the predator actually is. (Or do we?!)
The first time I sat through this movie, I was a nervous wreck, sitting on the edge of my seat. And yet I simply had to watch it all.
I had no idea who or what was killing off this group of men. And I never would have guessed the outcome, or the menace behind it.
For anyone who has yet to see this film, all I can say is it is worth watching. And I really do not want to give too much of ... ...a handful of the best, most highly trained fighters, and doing so in a most gruesome manner.
The sequel with Danny Glover is very good as well, and, you do get to see a lot more of the actual predator. However, it is the not knowing in this thriller/suspense/action movie (Predator) that provides the good entertainment, and drama, that such a movie was intended to.
It may be a guy flick, but I enjoyed it tremendously. Excellent ride from beginning ...
