Advantages: Great special effects Disadvantages: Poor storyline, no empath for the characters

'The Poseidon Adventure' may have possibly been my favourite movie when I was younger. From when I was about 7 I would sit in front of the TV with my mum and sister and sing along to 'There's Got to be a Morning After' and think thank goodness for the air pockets! I'd be amazed the at the Christmas Tree scene and feel as claustrophobic as they did when they got trapped in various situations.
Well, imagine my delight when I realised ... ...are stunning masterpieces.
Poseidon is directed by Wolfgang Peterson who also directed 'Das Boot', 'Troy' and 'The Perfect Storm', the latter two, to me, were dire. They are films I'd watch once and promptly forget or in the case of 'Troy' watch half then walk out of the cinema. I just hoped Poseidon would live up to its counterpart.

...doesn't know the tale of Poseidon or The Poseidon Adventure, from 1972, the premise of the story is on New Year's Eve a huge tidal wave knocks over a massive cruise ship and it rolls right round so it is upside down on a tilt in the middle of the ocean. Hundreds lose their lives immediately with the flooding and fires that encompass most of the ship but a large group of revellers on two different floors of the ship survive…but for how long?

Poseidon does also include one of my favourite actors, Kurt Russell. Kurt plays the part of Robert Ramsey, a father to the newly engaged Jennifer and being an ex-fire-fighter is obviously up for the job pretty well. Kurt Russell is getting on a bit now and he doesn't quite come across as the action hero as well as he used to, only to be expected of course. And in my opinion the director has not asked too much of him. The ...

...some reason I don't think Poseidon has received the popularity it should have done. This is such a great action film. I wasn't planning on actually watching the film and when it began I thought I would just watch some of it but, before I knew it, the film was finishing and I hadn't moved from my seat as it was so gripping. It has a very similar storyline to Titanic, apart from the love story is missing, but Poseidon is much better with all the effects ...

Advantages: A couple of scenes with good tension. Disadvantages: Hollywood turkey. C.G.I ride. Bland actors. Boring. Clichéd.
Poseidon was released sometime in May 2006 and was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the same guy who directed The Perfect Storm (2000), Das Boot (1981) and most notably, the Never-ending Story (1984). It is the remake of the 1972 classic, The Poseidon Adventure.

Poseidon is one of those turkeys.
It is not as bad as James Cameron's Titanic, but it comes close...
The first thing that struck me was the blandness of Klaus Badelt's soundtrack. Here, we are far from a subtle Jerry Goldsmith suite or an incredible John Williams orchestration. Badelt manages to put the whole cinematic concept into music by simply overusing his heroic theme and, as a matter of fact, all his other themes.

Advantages: A big action sequence Disadvantages: Zero character development, quite dull, cliched, all bang but no satisfaction
...of 70's disaster flick The Poseidon Adventure. With a titanic budget of over $150 million and a US gross of not even half that amount it's safe to say that this movie tanked and was left dead in the water floating away as a distant summer memory. Does the movie deserve such failure? Well to be honest it does.
On New Years Eve, Poseidon, a luxury ocean liner is hosting a lavish party to see out the end of the year. Everyone's having a great time ... ...for big disaster movies but Poseidon is frankly an exercise in tedium. For a film like this to work you need to be invested in the characters. The original movie attempted this. At no point in the re-make do we get any interesting character development. At what point did someone actually read the script and say 'hang on we can't spend $160 million on this', the chances are that they never did, instead thinking that a lot of CGI and a load of water ...

The Thing About Me and Scary Movies...
As some of you may know by now, I'm not big on the whole scary/fear factor type of film. The horror genre is just not my thing at all, and anything that is remotely nail-bitting is usually sidestepped for the Romcom or the period drama. I am, in point of fact, ... ...type. Let me give you an example. Upon seeing Independance Day at the cinema with my younger brother, at one part (the bit where the dog nearly gets engulfed in a fireball) I actually shouted IN THE CINEMA "the dog! the dog! OH! THE DOG!"
My brother has never been to the cinema with me since....!
So, it was with trepidation that I sat down last night, a large cushion next to me incase I needed it, to watch Poseidon. My lovely man bought it yesterday ...

...a successful seventies film ("The Poseidon Adventure"). Add in a few generic disaster movie characters, plus a homosexual to make it all cosily politically correct. Throw in a star name or two, get yourself a huge special effects budget, and viola! You have Poseidon. You may be able to work out from that not only that this film didn't do much for me, but that I'm not a great fan of the disaster movie genre. Apart from Volcano (which benefited greatly ... ...The end. Well, Poseidon can't really help having a predictable "This ship cannot sink!" … … … "Oh dear, this ship is in fact sinking" moment, it has the same inevitability as Titanic. (Oh hang on, I did enjoy that one - oops, there goes my last tiny scrap of credibility…) With equal inevitability there's a rugged male character who unwillingly takes the lead and gains redemption for his previously self-centred way of life, an over-protective father ...

Advantages: Good disaster film Disadvantages: A bit repetitive and predictable
Poseidon is the 2006 remake of The Poseidon Adventure (1972). Directed by Wolfgang Peterson, it is a straight remake and well made action film.
The Plot
The luxury liner 'Poseidon' is swamped by a huge wave and overturns. The majority of the survivors stay in the main hall of the liner while a small group make a bid to get to the surface. However, the ship is a maze of passages, and the overturning of the ship is causing flooding, fires and other ... ...is a good cast on show here. Josh Lucas plays Dylan Johns, one of the leads, as the man who persuades the group that going to the surface is the only safe course of action to take. His intensity in the role matches the mood created by the director perfectly. Kurt Russell is Robert Ramsey, New York Mayor, and the tussle of power between his character and Johns. There are similar good performances from Richard Dreyfuss and Jacinta Barrett. The remainder ...

Advantages: action, characters and good special effects Disadvantages: none that i can think of
I watched this film recently without hoping for much as I knew it had been released the previous year and had never got round to watching it as it wasn't one that I thought would be up to much!
I wish I had watched it sooner now as I thought the film was of high quality with a good mix of special effects, actors and action.
The film starts off with the main characters shown to be aboard this luxury liner and spending the evening partying to celebrate ... ...the charcaters that we learn about as such, as it's not really needed but, we do learn a little about them and their story is based on the cruise liner, which is named poseidon, being hit by a freak wave called a 'rogue wave' and how they survive it. Most of the passengers are in the ships main ballroom or disco at the time and the story follows the survival of 9 of the passengers. The main character who is played by actor Josh Lucas in the character ...

It really is the new Titanic but with a little less love. This movie is intense, and will have everyone on the edge of their seats when watching it. When the cruise ship 'poseidon' is over turned by a freak wave alot of people are trapped with no way out, however a small group of people try to get to the bottom of the ship, which just happens to be up now. This film is full of death and really does scare you in that freaky way. When watching it all ... ...What would i do?
And that is what makes this film, the ship is one of the biggest i have ever seen and the group of survivors have to make their way through floods, fires and mounds of dead corpses. This film is brilliant and you will never get tired of watching it over and over again. The acting in this film is phenomenal and very emotional, they really did pull it off well. I would recommend movies like this to everyone and even more films with ...

The story is set on the gigantic ocean liner The Poseidon. It's New Years Eve and with celebrations thruout (some spectacular singing from Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas), the crew of the ship do not notice a rogue wave coming toward them. The result is the ship turning over and laying upside down.
Inside the ship there is chaos. However, 1 of the guests, Dylan (played by Josh Lucas) decides to try and escape. With him other guests follow. There ... ...daughter Jenny, her boyfriend Chris, Maggie and her son Connor, Richard (played by Richard Dreyfus), Elena the stowaway, Lucky Larry (played by Matt Dillon) and Marco a steward.
Together they wade thru the deep water, drowned bodies and fires to reach an exit point on the bottom of the boat. Only 6 survive, You'll have to watch to find out who!

Advantages: A remake of the 1972 classic. Wasnt a huge hit with the box office but was a classic for me. Disadvantages: None
The original Poseidon was released in 1972 and was a huge hit. The 2006 remake was as you could probaly guess filled with better special effects. Hundreds of passengers are on a huge cruise liner for New Year when a huge wave bigger than the boat smashes into the ships side and tips it up-side down. Hundreds of passengers who were inside when the wave struck survive, but are stuck under the water upside down. A small group of passengers are led by ...
