The Music
*********
This was the second music score written by Georges Delerue for an Oliver stone film. The first one written being written for "Salvador (1985)". The music is quite frankly awesome. On it's own it is haunting and ... ...cried when I first heard it and I still cry when I hear it now (guess I am just a big baby!). Adagio for strings really sticks in my mind and you will hear it when "Elias" is being chased through the jungle by the enemy. Even the hardiest of filmgoer cannot fail to be moved when they hear this music, if you feel no emotion listening to this then you are probably dead!

Advantages: gritty, and realistic Disadvantages: brutal
...Released first in 1986, Platoon received a rather mixed reception. The strange thing is, that it was both praised and criticised for exactly the same reason. Quite simply it was seen as being too realistic.
Platoon is, in essence, a gritty and truthful vision of war. A lot of people thought that it went too far. However, I think that it was high time that a film was made that did not try and sugar coat war. Unfortunately, all too many people on ... ...can be felt by all. Platoon certainly does have that. And its realism is added to, by the fact that its director was using life experience to base his direction, not the views of others. Neither was he basing the movie on what other directors had done before him. Feelings for him were raw, and this shone through in the film itself.
The film is harrowing. The film is convincing. Quite frankly, the film is brutal. In my opinion, though that makes ...

Platoon is certainly one of my favourite war films from any particular era, although it doesn't quite reach the same intensity of Apocalypse Now or All Quiet on the Western Front. But it does have a more natural honesty about it than say Saving Private Ryan.
What I particularly liked about the film was the way America wasn't only fighting the Vietnamese but also the liberals & conscientious-objectors back home as well as their own internecine squabbles ... ...hands-on reflections of his own Tour of Duty don't hark upon the out-and-out conflict against the enemy. Instead he tries to point the camera at the young conscripts themselves. One minute they're thinking of college educations and a decent, well-paid job; the next they're out in the jungle being ripped to shreds by lethal blades of long grass, eaten by red ants, blood-sucked by leaches, and that's even before you factor-in the enemy and their on-the-ground ...

Advantages: One of the best war films ever Disadvantages: upsetting in places
...as well as the blood. Platoon is the movie that every other film borrows from in some way whether it is the style or the characters. Platoon gave birth to the typical soldier stereotypes that plague modern war films. In ‘Platoon’ the’ young rookie’ is played by a fresh-faced Charlie Sheen and the ‘tough grizzled commanders’ are played by ‘Tom Berenger’ and ‘Willem Dafoe’ who were both Oscar ... ...but I strongly recommend it). Platoon possesses a strong and unmatched power to move and to really tug on the audiences emotions like no other film.
One reason for its spellbinding effect on an audience is the music, played throughout the film when Charlie Sheen the narrator is thinking. During the ending the music plays out in full for the end battle and this caused many tears to roll slowly down the faces of the audience. It is a very moving and ...

Advantages: script, direction, scenery and camera-work Disadvantages: none
Obviously, this is about the masterpiece that was Platoon, a film by Oliver Stone. This has to be one of the greatest Vietnam War films ever, winning several oscars. Some may say that Hamburger Hill, which is in itself a fantastic film, was the more deserving of the two, but I fell that Platoon, has a certain direction and feeling, that can just pull anyone in.
The film, among many stars, has the, what is a small time talent, of Charlie Sheen, known ... ...main, or what is seen to be main, role of the film, with intense narration from him, to add to the power and impact of the scenes. There is a certain quality that is brought to the film, because of the way that this has been integrated, and makes you feel emotional.
So the story basically revolves around a platoon, hence the name of the film, who are sent into the north of Vietnam, with Charlie playing the newbie of the group. I am relatively sure ...

Advantages: Realistic, great performances Disadvantages: Will not suit all tastes
...that comes through most in Platoon is this is what Vietnam was like. It doesn’t go in for the glory of war or any other Hollywood nonsense; Oliver Stones uses his own experiences to put across what it was like. It is probably as close to a true to life account as you can get. The story is told through the letters and experiences of a naive college dropout, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) to his grandmother. The letters tell a lot of what Chris ... ...Quite early on we are told that the new guys are treated with contempt as they have not served their time yet and if someone is going to die its better being a new guy than someone with experience. On arriving Chris is immediately met by the sight of body bags and broken men travelling home. He regrets volunteering and begins to doubt his ability to see the year of duty out. On his first watch he is wrongly accused of falling asleep and the lives ...

The Vietnam war seems to be one subject in the film world that has thrown up a host of well respected movies. Unlike the glorification and propaganda overtones that are prevalent amongst those that retell the Second World War, by the time directors began to tackle the subject of Vietnam, a very different attitude was in the air and a more realistic and neutral position was taken. Amongst the short list of worthy productions regarding this period ... ...1986 film is based around the experiences of a green recruit in 1967 in the jungle and villages of Vietnam, Charlie Sheen makes a good job of this role as Chris, a nervous and bewildered infantryman, with possibly more than a little of Stones own experiences of this war being woven into the part. Chris finds himself in a unit that is divided into basically two factions with their own warring leaders. Tom Berenger is Sergeant Barnes, the dark hero ...

Within his platoon are 2 fueding sergeants played by William Dafoe and a scar faced Tom Berenger who allegedly cannot die, and their mens division within the ranks. This is until Charlie Sheen (the rookie soldier) sees Dafoe after this, running away and being shot by the persuing Viet Kong. I wont tell you then end ing but you must watch it. A great film by a great director, Oliver Stone. The Sound track is one of the finest pieces of classical music ever written. The incidental music throughout is in keeping wit the rest of the film period by selecting chart songs ...

WHAT IS IT ABOUT: This powerful war film follows a new recruit to the Viet Nam war who refuses to accept the atrocities that take place there. Starring Charlie Sheen and Johnny Depp, the movie is directed by Oliver Stone. IS IT ANY GOOD: In terms of war movies, this is a seminal work. The plot sets out to deliberately showcase the barbarism of the US troops, and it's a harrowing tale. Scenes of troop brutality are commonplace, and some bits are uncomfortable ... ...to it, so don't sit down to watch it for your wife's birthday! The acting is brilliant, inspired largely by Stone's working conditions; he took the actors on a six week trek through the jungle, living as soliders would have done. When it was over, and they were all worn out and needed a good few days rest, he immediately began shooting the movie, providing a realistic experience of the tiredness real soldiers would have felt. A young Charlie Sheen ...

Advantages: Very well made. Disadvantages: So much violence and swearing.
This film is totally filled with violence and swearing from beginning to end and should not be watched by youngsters or anybody that can be offended by violence or bad language. Having said that, the film is a classic portrayal of American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War, is brilliantly made and often feels like a documentary. The futility of war shines through with the infantry fighters not understanding the politics or the tactics, but realising ... ...survive until their tour of duty was over. Each man knew exactly to the day how long he had to go before the war was over for him. Charlie Sheen (as Chris Taylor) has volunteered to fight in the war and stands out as the white rich kid amongst the men he is fighting with, most of who had no jobs, no future and saw the army as a way out from the lives they had left behind. There is an element of narration in the film when Taylor writes letters back ...

Advantages: Very credible account of Vietnam (Not that ... "I was there man".) Disadvantages: Credibility problems with Charle Sheen.
...the films narrator. To me Platoon has always been an “also ran” compared to Apocalypse Now, possibly due to Charlie Sheens comedic stereotype. However as I watch it, I feel the films power. Where Apocalypse Now is surreal, Platoon is the grunts film. Air Cav’ do fly about shooting up 50 calibre machine guns bolted onto 2CV’s, instead the troops lose the plot in a village and commit horrific acts. As a child is about to be slaughtered in the village ... ...and helpless, you feel immense anger towards the ineffectual young officer Lt (Mark Moses) Wolfe who has stood by unable to calm his troops blood lust. This film well illustrates the monsters that can be unleashed by circumstance; there is no crazed Colonel up the river, no bizarre interviews with the General as with Apocalypse Now, just very human behavior such as bitchiness and aggression. Whilst many people fought noble battles in Vietnam, others, ...

Advantages: powerful film , great value dvd Disadvantages: Not enough scenes with Johnny Depp in
Before watching platoon i knew nothing really of the Vietnam war.after this i felt like i'd been there with the soldiers , nerves on edge, expecting to be blown up/bayoneted/shot at any second.
The acting is some of the best i have seen ina war film. Charlie sheen plays the innocent volunteer who is mentally and physically battered into a hard nut like the other soldiers. Tom Berenger is the cold blooded Sergeant Barnes, who has no concept of right ... ...compassionate and stands up for what he believes. In my opinion this was a film that kicked off several actors careers, like Johnny Depp ( yes pirates of the Carribean Johnny Depp) and Forest Whitaker. Depp is not abundant in the film and the first time i saw it you barely notice him as his scenes are so brief. Other than this the film is flawless. The imposing soundtrack combined with the revealing camera work makes it unforgettable. Certain parts ...

Advantages: ITS BRILLIANT....NUFF SAID Disadvantages: Not likely
What can be said about Platoon that hasnt been said before? Well to be honest nothing!!!! This film is as powerful and shocking as it is moving and thought provoking, from the moment the line "Thats a good gook.....good and dead!" is uttered, you know you are in for a horror of a film..... true reality.
I first saw this film in the late 90's and was so impressed I rushed out and tried to buy a copy...only to be told "sorry sir this film has been ... ...How? Who knows...an Oscar winning film of true brilliance deleted...??? Madness.
Well months of searching finally located a copy at a car boot sale....Im still not sure if it is a pirate or not, the quality is good....but the day I found out it was due for release on DVD I ordered it straight away.
On DVD the true cinematic brilliance of Oliver Stones vision is immediately honoured with pin sharp picture and sound, and whilst there are no real ...

...Vietnam comes to life in Platoon and you really feel for the characters and the situations that they get into. Tom Berenger is brilliant as Sergeant Barnes, he plays his character so well, you forget he's just an actor. All the supporting cast a great as well.
