...of this Summer’s latest blockbuster, Planet of the Apes. It was certainly costly and it does contain a great deal of grunting, battling and mayhem. It isn’t a film for PhD students to sharpen their wit on, but it is a surprisingly watchable film and will no doubt provide much fodder for Ciaoers for weeks to come.

It also gave a new acceptability to sci-fi movies. Before it, they had been very definitely B-list films. 20th Century Fox, which made the original, went on to produce the ultimate sci-fi films - the Star Wars series. The film was based on a book by a former spy, Pierre Boulle. It was based loosely on his experiences as a prisoner of war at the hands of the Japanese. One of his ...

That it is popularly felt among critics that the original Chucky H version leaves Burton's revival in its wake despite unbelievably dire masks and the equally dire Roddy McDowall is testament enough to the script, the theme and the leading man. Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970), Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971), Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972) and Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) gradually got more and more shallow and flimsy, eventually trailing off into parody and errant nonsense, but always there was the original and Chucky H, standing tall in the memory.
Planet of the Apes is often cited as being one of the great allegories about what Man has ...

Something of a connoisseur on all matters relating to the trilogy and the late, great Douglas Adams (he writes here too occasionally, you may know to whom I’m referring), we waxed apelike until he offered to lend me a copy of the original on VHS.

Planet of the Apes 2001
On going to see ‘Planet of the Apes’ a few days ago I resolved to try not to compare it to the ‘Charlton Heston’ version. Alas this lasted until the second scene; the similarity of the main story to the original makes seeing it in isolation is difficult at best. So is the movie as good as I had hoped. Well in truth no. That is not to say this is bad or even a poor movie, it is simply not as good as ... ...and crashes on a strange planet ruled by apes. So far so familiar.
The chief apes are General Thade (Tim Roth) leader of the ape army, this loyal friend and trusted warrior Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan) and sympathetic chimpanzee Ari (Helena Bonham Carter). As humans can talk in this version a lot of the early part of the film centres not on Leo’s strangeness. This is a loss to the overall feel of the movie as there really is very little special ...

...This is the case with Planet of the Apes, 1968 version I am reviewing here, while the remake not a bad film, it not a patch on the original film.
Storyline and cast.
The original was released in 1968, and set new standards in make-up at the time, and still impressive today. The film won two Oscars at the time, for Best Costume Design by Morton Haack and Best Music, Original Score for a Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith. To the shock of the astronauts, the humans are then attacked and rounded up by apes on horseback, who seem more advanced than the humans, and who rule the planet, hence the title of the movie. While the film could just been seen as film about the astronauts trying to survive in a hostile world, I would ...

Advantages: A really great film Disadvantages: none
The Planet of the Apes has long been a favourite film of mine, I think it has similar merits to the book 1984. It seems to me that science fiction has a way of showing the nature of mankind in a way no other genre can. The Planet of the Apes is not a film about a planet of apes but a film about the human race, and how arrogant, xenophobic and callous we are or can be.

The Planet of the Apes is based on the book by Pierre Boulle, which is quite different, the apes are more advanced, but due to budgeting they decided to regress them timewise in the film, also in the book Taylor's mate, who he names Nova, is pregnant and has a son, but this does not

I think that I was very affected by films as a child. For many of my early years I had a recurring nightmare of being chased through a corn field by marauding gorillas....it was horrible. ...when the story is a planet run by apes where humans are the slaves?
