Not only was the disc bare-bones, but the anamorphic image was extremely dirty, with smudges and grain galore. The transfer on this new “Those Aren’t Pillows!” edition is a huge improvement, with sharp black levels, terrific flesh tones, and very bright colors. Everything has been cleaned up for a sweet image; even if it boasts a slight softness, ...

...driving force behind John Hughes Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. And alright so that's based around Thanksgiving rather than Christmas but they're much the same thing and we don't celebrate such things here anyway.
With the Thanksgiving holiday just two days away, New York advertising executive Neal Paige needs to catch a flight to Chicago to spend the holidays with his wife and three children. But it's Thanksgiving and even getting to the airport ... ...turbulent of decades, the 80's, Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Planes... hereafter) is one of those films that you always seem to forget about. It never pops into your mind when you think of 80's comedies but there it is. Must be because it's bad ehh? Yeah, that'll be it.
Actually that isn't 'it' as Planes... is actually a very funny film. The story plays on a situation that we've all found ourselves in and this allows us to readily accept Neal ...

Advantages: Highly enjoyable, good acting Disadvantages: A thin script, light on ideas, too many inappropiate 80s pop songs
John Hughes' PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES was released in 1987, the decade of Hughes' moviemaking heyday. After a stew of poptastic teen films such as SIXTEEN CANDLES, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF and THE BREAKFAST CLUB, this film would mark his first foray into adult territory; but is it any good?
Neal is an upright and stiff marketing consultant in New York, a couple of days before Thanksgiving. All he wants to do is go home. Dell, where’s your other hand” “Between Two pillows” “THOSE AREN’T PILLOWS” PT&A is one of my favourite comedy films for several reasons. A brief synopsis of the film: An all American wealthy advertising executive (Steve Martin) is trying to get home for Xmas, he is foiled at every attempt by mother nature, human incompetence or just plain bad luck. On his travels he gets teamed up with a shower ring salesman ... ...journey only too end up friends. A comedy film that tries to just give you humour or punch lines sinks to the level of slapstick. Whereas a good comedy film has to achieve something very hard to do and that is turn a bizarre unfunny situation into humour. This PT&A does really well the 2 characters are so different that the humour can bounce back and forth so well. The hardest thing in comedy is to turn from sadness to humour so quickly that the ...

Advantages: Funny and relaxing, a feelgood film Disadvantages: A bit cheesy in places
I have to admit it, this is still one of my favourite films of all time. OK, so it's cheesy and corny in places, and the clothes and haircuts are beginning to look extremely outdated, but the humour has aged well nonetheless. The two main characters in the film are Neal Page (played by Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy). Page is a marketing executive from Chicago, who works in New York and is just trying to get home to see his family for ... ...and Fixture's Shower Curtain Ring Division.
Right from the start, events conspire against Page as he attempts to make his way to the airport for the 6pm flight to Chicago - a youthful-looking Kevin Bacon makes a brief cameo appearance as his opponent in a fruitless race to hail a cab in the NYC rush hour, and then Page manages to convince an attorney to sell him his cab, only for someone to sneak in and steal his ride. When he finally does arrive ...

Advantages: John Candy. John Hughes, Steve Martin Disadvantages: None
Hopefully that got your attention as it is one of the funniest (and cringe worthy scenes in Planes Trains and Automobiles, perhaps my favourite John Hughes film.
Martin plays Neil Page, an uptight ad exec (or is that a redundant statement)desperate to get home for Thanksgiving. His plane is first diverted and then cancelled and he finds himself travelling with Del Griffin, a curtain shower ring salesman, with an eager to please, open personality. ... ...nostrils and our heroes have a series of mishaps on the way home involving various talented character actor co stars.
It's essentially a road movie, a collection of what would be set pieces and there are no real weak elements or areas of lack of pace.
If you've seen the film on TV, get the video as the scene where Neil sounds off to Edie McClurg (a John Hughes favourite) about not having a hire car really loses something when the swearing is dubbed ...

Advantages: Hilariously funny! John Candy, John Hughes & Steve Martin. Disadvantages: DVD version has no added features
...with Uncle Buck I’d say Planes, Trains and Automobiles are John Hughes best films, and John Candy’s best films too.
~* Story *~
Anyway onto the story; Neal Page (Steve Martin) a highflying “big cheese” at a large company US company is desperate to get home to Chicago for thanksgiving. Amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City Neal struggles to make it to the airport in time for his flight. After a lot of stress and running around Neal makes ... ...moments. The funniest scene of Planes, Trains and Automobiles has to be when Del and Neal are pulled over by the police in their burnt out car whilst singing Blue Moon of Kentucky.
~* Overall *~
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a very, very funny film but the plot is also superb and despite the film being a tad predictable most people will really enjoy it. It’s a bit of a shame though that the DVD version has no added features. ...

Advantages: Candy and Martin in great form. Lots of laughs. Disadvantages: No extras.
Neal Page and Del Griffith. Two men who just wern't supposed to travel together. With Thanksgiving just days away, Steve Martin steps in to the shoes of businessman Neal Page. All he wants is to get home to his family and see his daughter. Unfortunately for him, Planes Trains and Automobiles was never written with the intention of an easy journey home. Anything and everything that could possibly go wrong, does just that.
This was the film that forced ... ...holiday season, it tells a wonderfully simple yet utterly enjoyable tale of two men trying to make it home, both faced with a series of disasterous transportation mishaps combined with extreme weather. The delights of "Planes, Trains" rests in the stark contrast of nature between Neal ...

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is and probably always will be one of my favourite comedy movies. I've always took a shine to many a John Hughes movies (e.g. Ferris Buellers Day Off, Weird Science, Shes Having A Baby, etc.) but this is his funniest to date.
Steve Martin and John Candy are well on form as Neal Page and Del Griffith respectively. Steve Martin was at one time probably one of the funniest men on celluloid. And this movie just proves ...

Advantages: CLASSIC COMEDY NOT TO BE MISSED. FIRST CLASS Disadvantages: NO BOATS.
Thanksgiving is not what us brits go in for (would not be a bad thing though i.e extra holidays) but to the Americans it's as nearly important as Christmas, a time to spend with family and loved ones. THE STORY

This is one of my all-time favourite films. Starring my favourite actor Steve Martin and the late John Candy, who make an amazing partnership.
John Candy is a shower curtain ring salesman(!) and he meets Martin on a flight to somewhere. ...actors going, just opt for Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This is a really funny, yet poinient, feel good film starring the wonderful Steve Martin and comic genius John Candy (who is sadly no longer with us). These two comedy actors are the type which you only have to look at to burst out laughing anyway, and this is before they have done anything ... so be warned, you will giggle yourself silly at this film. The laughs come as these two try to get home for Thanksgiving by various methods of transport, when they are firt thrown together after their plane is delayed by bad weather. Advantages: Funny, Great - well known actors, Light-hearted Disadvantages: A tad predictable, typical cheesy comedy
When I first watched this film, I wasn't expecting much from it. I liked John Hughes as a director, and loves Steve Martin as an actor - so I thought I'd give it a shot. It got straight into the storyline from the beginning, and the humour was consistent throughout the entire film. I can't think of a bad point about this film, although that could just be me!
