Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a fun packed combination of adventure and comedy with the merest dab of horror about it – it emanates from Buena Vista International, which as we all know is just a grown up (or dumbed down) version of Walt Disney’s movie empire, and is in the grand tradition of Disney (whatever that means), although it ain’t a remake of Blackbeard’s Ghost.

Advantages: Genius casting, Very humourous in places, Lots of British actors, Long film so value for money, Good special effects, Excellent DVD Extras, Johnny Depp, 'Gareth' from the office! Disadvantages: Some "wooden" acting in places, Could have been more involving with the audience, Plot development slightly weak, Many of the DVD extras need CD-ROM to use, Not for you if you don't like the typical pirate stereotype.

Advantages: many - funny, clever, good looking and that's just the cast. Disadvantages: teeny tiny plot niggles for pedants.
I was one of those kids who grew up watching the classic swashbucklnig films, you know, the Stewart Grainger and Errol Flynn stuff that they must be re-running. If you like this sort of genre, you know what you want and you'll also know there hasn't been much of it around recently. 'Pirates of the Carribean'is quite perfectly a swashbuckling movie, with corsetted damsels in distress, pirates, sword fights, ships, ship fights, buried treasure, deserted ... ...- the works.
I think the above list gives you a good gist of the plot without giving away too much. So rather than go on about that, I'm going to enthuse, perhaps at times to the point of drooling, over the cast.
Johnny Depp. He's the camp, funny and unfeasibly cool Captian Jack Sparrow, and he's the glam rock pirate - eyeliner, bandanas etc. He's glorious to watch, and alternates between sheer cool and amazing incompetance in ways that will keep ...

Pirates of the Caribbean is a fast-paced, lively action film that does its very best to entertain everybody in the audience. Visually, it is very impressive and has a certain quirky edge to it quite unlike anything that I’ve ever really seen before. If I had to compare it to another recent cinema success then I would say that it is rather like the horror/comedy/adventure that we last saw in The Mummy and The Mummy ... ...general good idea, I found Pirates of the Caribbean incredibly, terribly dull. This is a great action-packed and entertaining film which doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's definitely my favourite film of recent years. Captain Jack Sparrow, having lost his ship, the Black Pearl, to his mutinous first mate, Barbossa, arrives in the town of Port Royal and inadvertently gets himself thrown in jail for piracy when he saves the Governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann, from drowning. Whilst he's locked up the town is attacked ... ...the piece of Aztec gold that Elizabeth has in her possession. Barbossa's crew kidnap Elizabeth, prompting her childhood friend, Will Turner, to team up with Jack Sparrow in a gallant attempt to rescue her and recover Jack's ship. ...have liked the script for Pirates Of The Caribbean. With Geoffrey Rush in the opposite role as the pirate captain, there was much potential for a very believable rivalry in the film. Supporting roles from Orlando Bloom, of Lord Of The Rings fame, and Keira Knightly, lead role in Bend It Like Beckham, the film had all the gold needed for an excellent film.
To put it bluntly, the film is a treasure. The storyline may be a little cliché, (as would ... ...Elizabeth is kidnapped by the pirates and Jack Sparrow and Will Turner steal a ship to go after the Pirate ship, both for their own reasons; Jack to get the ship back, and Will to save Elizabeth.
The film is by far the best pirate film in a long time, maybe ever, and is definitely worth seeing, if only for Johnny Depp’s eccentric acting. You owe it to yourself to see one of the most unorthodox films in the past decade. ...

...in order to keep the pirates in line.
Elizabeth follows her heart and really shows off the romance in the the film which only adds to the already fantastic qualities the film possesses.
Geoffrey Rush "Captain Barbosa"
Captain Barbosa is whats known as the bad guy of the film. He is led by greed and spite. Barbosa and his bunch of wicked mis-fit pirates are cursed from aztec gold that Barbosa led them to, now the crew and Barbosa are forced to ... ...barbosa steals the Black Pearl from Jack Sparrow and sets upon a quest to recover all of the aztec gold in order to lift the curse, yet as well all know it really never is that simple!!!

...just how much I love Pirates of the Caribbean? Well I have seen it three times at the cinema so far and I'll probably sneak in another before it eventually leaves the multiplexes.
To condense the plot (which isn't the real selling point of the movie anyway). Pirates (led by the menacing Geoffrey Rush) lay seige to a town, kidnapping Keira Knightley in the process. We learn said Pirates are cursed. It's a pretty grim curse and the only way to lift ... ...gold that Knightley is currently in possession of. I'm actually getting a bit bored now and I think if I did sit here typing out the less than inspired story I wouldn't do justice to the film, so I'll move on to the good stuff.

Advantages: Witty, fast-paced, likeable characters Disadvantages: Very Disney, a few very silly moments.
The Pirates of the Caribbean pretty much did exactly what is said on the box. A swash-buckling Disney adventure with a tongue in cheek nod to the old style of Errol Flynn. The film was very enjoyable, and in no small part to the fact that neither the cast, nor it seemed the production as a whole took itself too seriously. Had they attempted to try for any hard-hitting moments, or too many clear moral threads the film would have not been anywhere ... ...sense. As a general rule pirates steal, maim and kill. There aren't many people who could find it in their hearts to say, "Yeah great guy, so don't worry about the 40 ships you sank with total loss of life." Maybe I'm just thinking about this too much..
Now on to the delectable Orlando Bloom. I thought he played the honest, blacksmith whose heart had been won by a lady above his station to a tee. He was perfect. His sweet, want to hug and take care ...

...governor proves determined to squash pirates Jack Sparrow and Barbossa (Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush) - the latter has stolen Jack’s ship and, with his crew, has become undead - Depp plays up the high jinks at the expense of piratical credibility. Fun though his lightheartedness and charm certainly are, he gives off not even a hint of danger, of nastiness, and, helped by his amusingly detached delivery, comes across less as seafaring monster of ... ...fact that our acceptance of pirates stems from seeing them portrayed as rogues rather than ice-cold plunderers, rapists and killers.
Depp is comprehensively out-pirated by Rush, who, despite his jokey-threatening burr, overblown stare and monkey clamped to his shoulder, at least infuses Barbossa with some darkness. One of the exceptional features in the film is Barbossa’s ability to become a scary/funny clanking metallic skeleton, to move from flesh ...
