...Disney animated film. This is Pinocchio which I'm sure many of us will have seen at some point during either our own childhood or with children. The film was released in 1940.
The plot:
Pinocchio is a wooden toy made by toymaker Gepetto. After he is finished making him he comments on how nice it would be if he was a 'real boy' and then after seeing a wishing star he makes a wish that this would come true! That night a fairy comes into Gepetto's ... ...from wrong. We then follow Pinocchio as he goes off to have his first day at school - he is distracted along the way though and meets Honest John who persuades him to come along and join the circus where he is then held captive.
Will Pinocchio be able to get back to his Gepetto and will Jiminy Cricket be able to help him?
Cast:
Plenty of voices for this film who did the characters speaking parts with all the main ones listed below - Pinocchio ...

Advantages: Jiminy Cricket, clever animation, lovely score Disadvantages: Lack of good songs, too scary for young children
...Story The story of Pinocchio begins, not with the main character with himself, but with the film’s guide and narrator Jiminy Cricket (a cricket, mind bendingly enough!) He takes shelter from the cold in the house of Gepetto, a toymaker who has just finished building a wooden puppet. Just before going to sleep, Gepetto sees that one of the stars in the night sky is a wishing star: and so, as a lonely old man with only his cat and fish for company ... ...doesn’t have. But even though Pinocchio appears around four or five years old, he is as innocent as the day he was born (which is., effectively, the day the film begins) and it is his naivety and trust in others that lands him in the series of scrapes that form the main body of the film. Characters The good characters in this film display a great deal of charm. Pinocchio is an engaging lead character, although consistently upstaged by Jiminy Cricket, ...

...much worth shopping around.
Pinocchio was the first animated Disney Classic to receive the DVD treatment and it is easy to see why, though the 1999 initial DVD release was somewhat disappointing in the lack of extras and seeming lack of any picture or sound improvement. This though, could perhaps be put down to Disney "testing the water" in terms of DVD being a relatively new format. However, we all know it took off in a major way and so the most ... ...well, as we all know! Pinocchio is the story of a puppet who longs to be a real boy. Built by Geppetto, who is very lonely. Geppetto wishes so much that Pinocchio could be a real boy. Geppetto is an honourable fellow and so his wishes are helped along their way by the Blue Fairy, who gives Pinocchio a certain degree of life. He is able to speak and move freely but is still wooden. In order to become a real boy he must learn the difference between ...

Pinocchio is one of those great films that you can revisit again and again throughout your whole life. If anyone says that animation is only for children, show them this film - it is very dark in places and scared me quite a bit as a child! But now it is my very favourite of all the Disney classics.

While some of the animation may look a bit dated now, every cell was painted by hand in beautiful detail. Also, the film pioneered such special effects as underwater animation.

Advantages: Timeless in nearly every way Disadvantages: They just don't make 'em like this any more
Pinnochio, to me, is a timeless movie. I think that is some of the magic of the early Disney films - they could transport you into this amazing world that made you laugh and made you cry. The only thing bringing you crashing back down sometimes was how the quality of the movie had seemed to diminish with time. The transfers to DVD have definitely done a lot to remedy that and it great to have such a classic movie as part of my collection. Watching ... ...love with this movie as a child. The beautiful and mischievous naievity of Pinnochio and the constant ignoring of his conscience Jiminy Cricket as well as the hindsight "I should have listened" at every turn not only amuses but also acts as a bit of a moral compass in some respects. And the adventure of a boy who is different and tries to fit in and always secretly wants to be something more can also touch even the hardest of hearts. ...
