...subject of homosexuality and AIDS, Philadelphia does an excellent job of disbanding many of the myths surrounding both of the subjects. Not only does Philadelphia tell a powerful story of injustice, it is also a beautifully shot film, which has many scenes which will tug at your heart strings. It also allowed Tom Hanks to demonstrate that he was more than capable of performing serious roles as he had previously been better known for his comedy roles. ... ...with such a challenging subject, Philadelphia managed to attract such big audiences. The success has been partly put down to director Jonathan Demme getting Bruce Springsteen to provide the title track for the film, which he felt would attract more people. Whether this is the reason, Springsteen's song "Streets of Philadelphia" really encapsulates the feeling of the film with some very moving lyrics.
The main character of the film is Andrew Beckett, ...

Advantages: Wonderful characters, excellent story and direction Disadvantages: Its very emotionally draining.
Where can I start about this film except to say that it was one of the most beautiful yet absolutely tragic stories I have ever heard. Tom Hanks masterfully portrays the character, Andrew Beckett, a homosexual lawyer. A man who, when it is revealed he has Aids, is fired by the successful law firm he works for. They reason given is that he has been incompetant in his work, a reason which everyone knows is simply an excuse to cover the fact that it ... ...the support of his boyfriend, Miguel Alvarez (Antonio Banderas) and his family he sets about finding a lawyer to act on his behalf during a court case regarding his unfair dismissal. Andrew settles upon Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) and visits him at his office. At first Joe is very reluctant to take on the case but eventually realise how worthwhile it is and agrees to represent him. The company does its utmost to bring Andrew down which only gives ...

Advantages: Well made film Disadvantages: Death is never pretty
This film is a must see. A tear-jerker?.. well maybe, but Tom Hanks performance is, as usual, outstanding. He gives a very guttsy and truly believable performance as a man who is fired from his job, because he has Aids, after, his bosses, gave him a feeble excuse of his so called ineptitude in the job. This film takes you through a whole load of emotions , laughter, sadness, fear, and anger are all there to see and feel. This is a truly well made, ...

Advantages: Very good film dealing with the prejudices of how people with Aids or HIV are treated. Disadvantages: Very sad film.
This is a film where Tom Hanks stars as a brilliant lawyer who is gay and has Aids. He does not tell his employers, but when they find out they fire him and make out that he is incompetent at his job.
He subsequently takes them to Court even though they are a powerful law firm. The story covers how Tom seeks the help of another lawyer and eventually they become friends. It goes into the law on how people should not be penalised for their illness.

Advantages: Strong performance by Hanks Disadvantages: Banderas poorly cast
This film stars Tom Hanks in his first serious role. He was previously known for his comedy movies, Big, Splash etc, so it was a surprise to see him in something this serious. He plays a man fired from his job for having HIV. This was a really serious issue when the film was new, and it turned a few heads, now however this type of movie is more common, so it suffers as a result. Antonia Banderas co-stars as Hanks gay lover, he was never really convincing ...

If anyone ever wanted an insight into what it is like to have HIV, and what prejudices that person has to suffer, not only is a person suffering physically but also being discriminated against because of what they have. Tom Hanks whom I am a huge fan of, stars in this film as the leading role.
He plays , Andrew Beckett a top lawyer who seemingly has it all, a good job, a stable relationship, but that all changes when he is diagnosed with aids. The ... ...to him, the illness costs him is job. Trough no fault of his own he is paying for having HIV. He needs support but does not receive it, his law firm show him the door instead of sympathy.
Andrew Beckett decides to challenge those who sack him, and with the help of his partner Miguel Alvarez, he needs a lawyer and eventually manages to find someone to take on his case Denzil Washington who plays Joe Miller. From then the emotional rollocaster starts, ...

Advantages: It really makes you feel glad to be alive Disadvantages: You must pick the right situation preferably a quiet night in next to a loved one
This film had a profound effect on me and that in my opinion is usually the indication of a good film. As a result of watching this film I began to question all my own predjudices and the way i felt about certain things.
The basic stroyline revolves around Andrew Beckett (played by Tom Hanks) a gay lawyer who takes a law suit out against his former employers; a wealthy law firm as a result of what he feels is unfair dismissal.
Andrew has AIDS and ... ...the support of his family and his lover (played by Antonio Banderas) takes on the fight.
Initially rejected by all lawyers Andrew takes the case on himself but following confrontation with his own daemons a man who formerly fought against andrew in the courts unites with him to fight the nations predjudices just as he fights his own.
The lawyer Joe Miller (played by Denzil Washington) does not find it easy but never gives less than his best.
