...order to create the ultimate perfume (as the synopsis on the back suggested), though it is also a mesmerizing character study of a most unusual individual. In many ways, he is a creepy chimera, dross of a derelict that speaks little and acts like a murderous mutt on a mission. The truth is that it's impossible to identify with him, and yet we find ourselves curiously following his journey from being an infant left to die by his mother to being a ...

The costume design is also exquisite, from the simplicity of Grenouille’s grubby, roughly woven rags to the intricate embroidery and beading of Laura’s opulent gowns. The screenplay by Tykwer, Andrew Birkin and Bernd Eichinger struggles to compact a dense literary text into a watchable format. It is beholden to the source material, ...

...they live on in the perfume that is created so their beauty lives on; the essence of their being still exists. I also thought the costume was great. A lot of research had obviously gone into 18th century French attire for this film, and although the majority of the film is set in the poorest parts of society, so the clothes are simple, the attention to detail is wonderful. The film recreates the dirty, smelly atmosphere of the period, and you see ...
...The theme of perfume is a very unusual concept, and a very interesting subject. You learn a lot about how perfume is made, and because it is teamed with murder, it makes it a most interesting subject. Another contrast is created by the perfume of classes of society; the rich bathe in wonderful scents, whilst the poor are exposed to everything revolting. It also exposes the frivolous nature of the upper classes at the time, spending money on luxury ...

Awaken your senses to the stench of murder

Advantages: Imagery and cinematography
Disadvantages: A little on the long side

How on earth do you bring to life a story that's simple concept is a sense unavailable to the medium it's being portrayed on? Smellovision is one of those daft ideas that someone came up with around the same time someone thought it'd be easy to make 3D films, thankfully it never came into being. A film based so closed to the concept of smell was clearly going to be a hard task for director Tom Twyker. Yet Patrick Suskind had managed to write the ...
...That is perhaps the best thing about the film, the way that the imagery is meant to awaken the senses to the point of creating almost mimicking those smells in our mind. The story itself is remarkably grim albeit based on a great core set of events. The conceopt was well flseshed out although perhaps a little too much, the film was a little on the long side for my taste. A nice twist towards the end rewarded my patience however. ...
