After more than two years of conflict in Europe (World War 2), America had managed to stay out of the war. They had only been sending supplies out to its British ally but that's about it. Still after numerous German U-Boat (submarine) attacks on these merchant vessels, America still did not give in. It was on December 7th 1941 (as forementioned) when the base of operations for the US Pacific fleet, Pearl Harbour undergoes a surprise bombing attack by the Japanese, did they declare war. After sixty years, Hollywood heavyweight, Jerry Bruckheimer (Armageddon, Top Gun, Bad Company, The Rock, Bad ... more

I just had to write this op having read some scathing reviews of this film since it opened. Not that I disagree with what most people say about it, because it is packed with flaws, but because I think the film does deserve an audience, albeit a limited one. I only went to see this film because I had an American friend staying with me, who was interested in the events that the film purports to depict. He was unaware of the critical reviews or the inherent romantic elements of the film but I decided to let him make up his own mind. I, therefore, had very few expectations for this movie. The film ... more

~ ~ I went to see the latest great war epic, Pearl Harbour, at the weekend, that has been advertising itself all over the place as THE definitive film about the event that catapulted the USA into the Second World War, and which changed forever the course of world history. This film actually lasted about an hour more than the actual attack itself, which was all over in a little under two hours. Yawn!!! After a very short period of time I found myself wishing that one of the Japanese Kamikaze pilots had survived, and decided to make a comeback and attack the film studio where this ... more

Advantages Advantages Half an hour of some of the best scenes and special effects in a film

Disadvantages Disadvantages The Love triangle, The hour and a half build up

In 2001 one of the most anticipated films in a long time was released, having spent a reported $130 million on the film, big things were expected. The team of Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay, added a lot of appeal to the film and suddenly it had become the must see film of the year, surpassing even the hype that had surrounded Titanic on it’s opening weekend. As you may have guessed this is a war film, based on events at Pearl Harbor, that brought the Americans into the war. But back track to before the war we first meet our two main characters as kids, Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett) and ... more

When I first went into the cinema, I was expecting a pretty average film, as I had read quite a few critics completely slate ‘Pearl Harbour’. When I left the cinema a brief 3 hours later, my first thought was “Ouch, my legs aren’t working properly” closely followed by “wow, that was actually pretty good!”. And that is what ‘Pearl Harbour’ is – pretty good. It seems to have the same effect on people as marmite, you either like it or you hate it, and I’d have to say that im probably firmly in the liking it camp. Bypassing all the ... more

**WARNING – EXCESSIVELY NEGATIVE OPINION TO FOLLOW – READERS WITH A FLUFFY DISPOSITION MAY BE OFFENDED** I suspect you may have gathered that I did not like this movie. It was the hype that did it. Any movie that gathers the volume of hype that this movie did will always have an uphill struggle convincing me that it was worth it – and Pearl Harbour simply wasn’t. The film centres on two American pilots who have been best friends since they were children. The film opens with a brief piece of storytelling that shows the two boys as kids, pretending to be pilots and ... more

Advantages Advantages Realistic and convincing special effects

Disadvantages Disadvantages Blatant Jingoism and major patriotism on the american side

Pearl Harbor is a classic example of a Hollywood war film, a vehicle which makes the second world war look glorious, virtuous and sexy. While the second world war was nothing like this, an audience can do nothing to change this impression other than demand the production of more historically accurate films, like the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan (1998). This opening sequence is seen by many modern historians as the most historically accurate portrayal of the Normandy Landings. Pearl Harbor is a 'high concept' film - "instantly memorable and has immediate saleability". People call the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great special effects

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't stay true to the actual events, love story is way too sensationalised

Pearl Harbor is the 2001 epic war film based on the real events of the attack of Pearl Harbor during World War II. The film was made on a budget of $151,000,000 and grossed an estimated $449,220,945 at the box office. Despite doing incredibly well at the box office this film bombed (no pun intended) with the critics, largely because of the sheer inaccuracy of the movie from everything to how the bombs drop to the lead characters taking down numerous planes while in the air, not to mention the love story between the three main characters. The film is rated 15 and runs for approximately 183 ... more

Pearl Harbor. Everyone knows of the real life events that made America join World War II. So now these harrowing events have been given the Hollywood big budget treatment. Not just the Hollywood treatment…but the Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer treatment. This basically means it’s going to be big and the result is surprising good. The plot involves Ben Affleck as American fighter pilot Rafe McCawley and his best friend Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett), also a pilot. The problem is that they are both in love with the same girl. This girl is a US Navy nurse Evelyn Johnson (Kate ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Too much stuff

Pearl Harbor was always meant to be the most immense of all Hollywood epics. Toiling in at mere minutes under three hours, it was an immensely ambitious project, weaving love stories and interpersonal relationships in and out of the World War II conflict between the USA and Japan which was sparked off the suicide bombing carried out on Pearl Harbor in 1941. It was certainly visually impressive, with vast daubs of colour and drama and the emotional pain of death and destruction with the small horrors of personal relationships and grief set deftly to counterpoint the more meaningless conflict ... more
