Advantages: Star cast, Looks good Disadvantages: Not funny, Not nearly noirish enough
...So when I saw one night at McCools down at the video store, I remembered reading a couple of favourable reviews a while back and I had to rent it.
For another thing, it boasts stars aplenty, being Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, John Goodman, Paul Reiser (you might not know the name but you'll recognise the face), and Liv Tyler. Matt Dillon plays Randy, a bartender working at McCools, who lives in a ramshackle house left to him by his mother. One ... ...moment of the movie, and one I won't forget for some time.
However, for me there were hardly any other comedy moments in the film. I watched it with a mate, and we both agreed that it was not very funny.
The noir aspect didn't work too well either. The 'comedy' and essential 'lightness' of the film took away from the suspense and darkness.
What you end up with is a strange hybrid of a movie that doesn't work properly on any level.

Advantages: good cast, Liv Tyler - SEX on legs! Classy comedy Disadvantages: slow in parts
...a Bar called ‘McCools’ where one night (hence the title) - enter gorgeous Jewel (Liv). Matt Dillon plays the barman, Randy (how apt?) who instantly falls for Liv’s obvious charms. He can’t believe his luck when she tells him her ‘sob story’ and asks to go back to his place for the night. But it gets even better than that for him as when asked her favourite thing, she replies quite bluntly “Fu**ing!” ... ...at having got away in one piece and....BOSH !!! Unexpected and a great ending to the film.
Overall this film could have been funnier, but I’m not sure that Director Harold Zwart was aiming at recreating a ‘Something about Mary’ or ‘American Pie’. The film is sexy, at times outrageous, subtle and cleverly done, but the slow parts are forgotten when you leave the cinema because you’ve just sat through the final ...

...the film, Michael Douglas, sporting one of the most incredibly awful toupees of all time and looking distinctly the worse for wear is a fourth guy whose life is impacted by Tyler, as Douglas hires him to bump her off after making his life an absolute misery.

What is the key thing about this particular film is the expertly woven tapestry which is lain before us, and the endlessly amusing developments presented.
Okay, beg me, and I may just give you a quick outline of the premise of what goes on ... Dillon is a bartender. Tyler is in cahoots with a heavy hood who have a decent scam going on whereby they pretend ...

Advantages: Great acting and superb final act that'll have you in stitches Disadvantages: Doesn't feel right as you watch it
I hadn't really heard anything of this film and went in to the cinema reasonably blind (which i always prefer, plots are spoiled too early these days) so it was nice to sit through a particularly funny if not strange comedy.
It all starts with Randy (Matt Dillon) bumping into Jewel (Liv Tyler), they get it together and carry on a rather unusual lifestyle (she'll do anything to get the dream house she's always wanted, even kill!), meanwhile Carl ... ...the local copper (John Goodman) and they are both obsessed by her.
The first half of the film see's the three men recounting events from the fateful first meeting betwwen Jewel and Randy. Randy is telling Michael Doughlas, as to who he is, you'll have to find out, at a bingo joint out in the middle of no-where. Carl is telling it to a therapist and John Goodman is tlking to a priest.
This telling of events (which occasionally overlaps) is a decent ...

This was a great comical film, with lashings of sexuality. Liv Tyler is stunning in the role and uses ...

One Night At McCools is one of those movies that doesn't have a lot of hype but has a decent cast whihc makes it a viable alternative when Bridget Jones is sold out for your preferred showing. The story revolves around three men and one trashy femme fatale named Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler). The film starts by seeing the three men each recounting their stories to somebody. Bartender Randy (Matt Dillon) tells his story to a sleazy hitman with an unmistakable ... ...The film is one of those where you can't say it's awful but it's not fantastic either. It just plays along for ninety minutes and makes harmless entertainment. One of the main problems is that it takes too long to get into the main bulk of the story with the first 30 minutes dedicated to flashbacks. Also it promises many twists in it's tail but they never materialize leaving you a bit deflated as a result. Howevere there are some funny moments throughout. ...

...1996) can play them all. One Night at McCool's is one of the lighter movies amongst the recent releases, but it'll have you captivated by Jewel's sassiness right from the start. Directed by Dutch commercial maker, Harold Zwart, this black comedy is the story of three men who become infatuated by Jewel - Randy (Matt Dillon, There's something about Mary, 1998) the guy who makes cocktails in a seedy night club, lawyer Carl (Paul Reiser, Pros and Cons, ... ...dead wife. The plot begins one night at McCool's, where these men first lay eyes on Jewel and the film then traces how their lives have changed since that night.
The film is told in flashback and each guy presents a different version of events as to what happened at McCool's and it is these conflicting stories that build up the tension and interest in the movie. Jewel however, is the main focus of our attention and Tyler's acting is fantastic. She ...

Advantages: Seeing Micheal Douglas as a laid back hit man, and greased up hair. Infact the way he plays the role of this hard criminal is very convincing! Disadvantages: A non-orignal sotry line.
One Night at McCools is an OK film but it isn't fantastic. It is a film that is slow to get off the ground. It goes like this, a guy works in a bar. When it closes a woman gets raped, and the guy ends up taking this blonde bombshell home. The woman moves in, and then the guy is suspected of assualting the woman, who the police officer is besotted with. It sounds lame and in all honesty has been done before.I won't tell you everything, because I would ... ...it.
However if you are looking for a piece of light comedy then this might just be the thing for you. It is hilarious seeing the guys brother who fancies his girlfriend. He is clad in S&M gear and waiting for her to arrive, and then his brother and the police officer arrive. Then another guy comes in who wants to kill them all - and the layer clad in S&M is trying to tell to dispense him sensible legal advice on how he would be in jail for life. ...
