North and South has been a favourite show of mine since it was on ITV in the late 1980's. I recently picked up a copy on DVD at a bargain price, so was happily reminded of how much I'd enjoyed it. Also, having a young and gorgeous Patrick Swayze in it wasn't to its discredit! Disadvantages: Cheesy

...slavery in the US but North and South does not cover it up nor does it condemn it outright. It just portrays how slavery was without modern retrospect. Like a primary source would and I would hope this is what the writer was aiming for. However, this issue is but a subplot overall.
