►►► Synopsis Ever since he was a young boy and his grandfather enthralled him with tales of a vast treasure which over the years has grown bigger and bigger, Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage) has been on a mission to discover the mythical treasure. But having discovered the latest clue to the treasures whereabouts, which points to one of America's most important documents, the Declaration of Independence, Gates is forced into taking drastic action and steals the historic document before his corrupt partner; Ian Howe (Sean Bean) gets his hands on it. National Treasure (2004) - FILM ONLY REVIEW Certificate: PG (UK) / PG (USA) / PG (Ireland) Run time: 131 minutes Director: Jon Turteltaub Main cast: Ben Gates - Nicholas Cage Abigail Chase - Diane Kruger Riley Poole - Justin Bartha Ian Howe - Sean Bean Patrick Gates - Jon Voight Special Agent Sadusky - Harvey Keitel As someone with an interest in history and archaeology, it is perhaps not surprising that I enjoyed the cheerfully silly Disney action adventure "National Treasure". Something of a sleeper hit when it was first released, this film was generally enjoyed by audiences but widely ... more

National Treasure : The greatest adventure history has ever revealed. From the makers of Pirates of the Caribbean, Walt Disney. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon before you have to trawl your way into work, than writing a review for Ciao. Now I’m about due one I think, I try not to block write reviews and to throw one out every so often, so here it is. Last Thursday, I went to see the film, National Treasure, so here’s my opinion of it. National Treasure starts off in 1974 in an old attic in Washington DC, with a little boy whom we learn is called Benjamin Franklin Gates, who finds ... more

Advantages Advantages A good action yarn

    Disadvantages Disadvantages A tenuous plot

~ ~ Every Christmas the mad cabbie and his young lass (13-year-old daughter) take in a movie at the local multiplex. It’s become something of a tradition, and we make a real treat of it, pigging out on the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, scoffing big tubs of popcorn, and generally having a whale of a time. This year we both decided that the new Nicolas Cage blockbuster, “National Treasure”, which opened here in Ireland just after Christmas, would be our film of choice. I’m a huge fan of the Cage fella, and the young lass has long been an aficionado of “treasure hunt” movies since cutting her teeth ... more

Advantages Advantages A good, entertaining film.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing original.

Whatever happened to the "adventure" genre movies ? In the 80's, we had classics such as "The Goonies", "Jewel Of The Nile", "Romancing The Stone" and, of course, the "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" and Indy films. Over the past few years, there have been very few of these types of movies - "The Mummy" may fit into this catergory, but it was not a very good movie. It came as some relief, then, when I first saw the trailer for "National Treasure" - a new adventure film starring Nicolas Cage. Now, having seen the movie, do I feel that the genre should have been left hidden and buried, or dug up and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Mindless fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor story, indifferent acting, poor characters

This film was never at the top of my list of films to see over the Christmas period but one dreary afternoon we decided to go to the cinema and this looked like it might be the best of a bad bunch. I had heard a bit about it and seen an interview with Nicholas Cage, and felt like it might be quite a cool film. There seemed to be some comparisons made between National Treasure and Indiana Jones but Cage had been quick to play these down. I don’t think it ever helps a new film like this to be compared to something that has been so successful. ** Background ** National Treasure is an action ... more

    Advantages Advantages It looks good

Disadvantages Disadvantages It isn't as good as it looks

Ben Gates is the latest in a long line of treasure hunters following clues to get their hands on a bounty of legendary proportions squirreled away by the Founding Fathers. The latest clue is on the back of the Declaration of Independence, so he must get his hands on it before ally-turned-enemy Ian Howe. Jon Turteltaub has been directing for some time now and, in my opinion, doesn’t have a great back-catalogue. His oeuvre has consisted mostly of sickly sentimental outings like “While You Were Sleeping”, “The Kid” and “Phenomenon”. So he seems a strange choice to helm a big-budget action movie ... more

Advantages Advantages Quite funny and exciting in places...

Disadvantages Disadvantages ... just not in enough of them!

National Treasure is a bit like Indiana Jones for kids without most of the things that made Indy so hugely enjoyable. Nicholas Cage plays Ben Gates, who comes from a long line of treasure-hunting maniacs (well, that's being a little unkind, but most of the archeological and historical world view them as such), whose ancestor was apparently entrusted with the first key to finding the greatest treasure on earth. This treasure was collected and then protected by the Knights Templar, the Freemasons, and all the usual suspects in this sort of utterly unlikely tale. Fun and havoc naturally ensues as ... more

    Advantages Advantages Action packed adventure

Disadvantages Disadvantages Far fetched story, inplausible clue cracking

Everyone dreams of finding treasure some time in their life; the anticipation, the adventure, notoriety and boundless wealth. This common dream has inspired films for centuries including Treasure Island, Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, to name but a few. National Treasure, released in the UK in December 2004, is the latest to hit the big screen. National Treasure is set for the main in modern-day Washington DC. The script was put together by no less than nine witers.including Jim Kouf, Oren Aviv and Cormac & Marianne Wibberley. Of course, there has to be a somewhat feasible story behind the ... more

Advantages Advantages A good, enjoyable script, with an excellent cast and decent direction. Good choice for all the family or just a friday night in

Disadvantages Disadvantages Justin Bartha will either annoy you or seem like the loveable fool

It seems that movie studios have suddenly caught up with the fact that Indiana Jones series were highly successful films. There now seems to be more and more ancient treasure hunting style movies being made. The two Tomb Raider movies lead the way and now we have the latest film from the Pirates of The Caribbean's producers, National Treasure. I seemed to miss this when it was out in the cinema but I decided to buy it on DVD, as I am quite a big fan of Nicholas Cage. Would it be any good or would I once again be left with that overwhelming sense of disappointment. Cage plays Ben Gates, the ... more
