Advantages: Superb cast Disadvantages: Book to screen loses plot
Apart from the brilliant "Unforgiven", films directed by Clint Eastwood have often disappoiinted audiences. Boasting a high class cast of 'actor's actors' however, "Mystic River" showed promise.
In 70s Boston the kidnap of one of three friends, Dave (Tim Robbins) casts a tragic shadow over the rest of his life. Years later having drifted apart the three are brought together again when the daughter Jimmy (Penn) is murdered. Penn , by far the daddy ... ...of a father's grief. Robbins too is equally watchable however soon the film begins to show tell tale signs of a book to screen adaptation trying to cram in a story. Talented actors like Laurence Fishburne are used only to advance plot whilst Laura Linney only hints at a character seemingly left off screen.
As our interest in characters is lost you would expect a gripping storyline to take over. Here again though another book to screen problem occurs. ...

Advantages: Story.Performances Disadvantages: Subject might not appeal to all, mostly females.
This Clint Eastwood film starring Sean Penn is a multi oscar winner.Belonging to the drama genre, this film focuses on the lives of three childhood friends living in the same locale, who grow up to only be neighbours to each other.Murder of Sean penn's daughter soon starts as a mystery, the case is handled by Kevin bacon and Tim Robbin's character is somehow touted as the suspect. As the three characters go on an emotional roller coaster(sean penn with ... ...robbin's troubled past keeps haunting him),the film moves on at a drastic pace towards the culmination, where all these emotions converge and result in a fantastic end to the film. I have become a fan of Penn's work recently after watching MIlk and 21 grams. This performances is at the top of the table, which actually got him an oscar nod.Tim robbins also bagged the oscars for his portrayal of the troubled, mysterious guy. Its actually the story here ...

Advantages: You know how a man should be Disadvantages: The message: A loser will be a loser forever
If you happened to read Hemingway's you'll probably see some points where a man should face horrible world. Tim Robbins, here play a victim of a brutal world. Once, he--in his childhood--could'nt refused men who asked him to come into the car while his other two friends could refuse--and the men molested the child (I think, in a more vulgar way--sodomized the kid).
The weak character of Tim Robbins in his childhood became real agony all along his ... ...weaker and weaker. His wife did't even trust him! One day when came home with blood in hands, his wife mistrust him for doing something wrong, even he was her husband.
Other two old friends, lived rather happier than Tim. Their wives trusted their husbands, defended them even though their husbands were wrong.
The best scene in the movie--I think--is when Sean Peann knew her daughter was killed. His expression of losing was really-really horrible ...
