This film is definately one for the girls, especially those who fancy John Corbett. Men would find it far too predictable, you know, boy meets girl, problems arise and then its all overcome. However, cynacism apart its very funny, especially if you know a family like the one in the film. Some of the jokes are predictable but thats what makes it such fun. I went to see this as a late birthday celebration with the girls and was hoping for a really non-stop laugh judging by the publicity. However, all though it was slightly rib-tickling I did find that it was powerfully stereotypical. For example - the parents. Why did no-one ever suggest to darling dad that if you take your children to live in a foreign land you must not be surprised if they don't agree to marry into the Greek community but go ahead ...
...Secondly the rather tired old cliche of mother actually being the boss by various subterfuges - though true enough is not exactly original. Getting her own way by pretending that her idea was actually his is plausible but not particularly novel. A keen comedy lover I watched the trailer for this film and had to see it. Unfortunately, it is one of thse films where all the funny scenes are used in the trailer. A classic "Chick Flick" which is ok to see if there is nothing else on at the cinema, but I wouldn't waste your money on seeing it at the cinema, you will feel you got more value for money if you rent it on video. The storyline is very basic, about a greek woman who has no love life ...
...low and behold she suddenly becomes beautiful and meets a handsome american. So the family don't agree 'cos they want her to marry a greek fella. ...for anyone. I took my friends 10 year old daughter and we both really enjoyed it. She found the subtitles that appear in the film a couple of times particularly amusing. Most blokes Probably wouldn't want to watch it because of the wedding theme, however they would enjoy it if they gave it a chance, (although they would never admit it to their mates!).
