I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, I knew it did really well at the box office and I was up for a bit of light hearted comedy- but I was really disappointed! Right, so our hero, or rather heroine is Toula, a Greek girl played by Nia Vardalos . Vardalos also wrote the screenplay for the film, which was Oscar nominated. This gave me the oppertunity to scrutinise the Academy yet again for thier idea of what cinematic art is today! Vardalos' ...
...which to her appears to be a massive problem with 'hilarious' consequesnces: cue hilariously embarrising family who cook, eat, yell and dance to thier own delight. When she finally comes to cutting the umbilical cord and marry the man she loves, shock horror the dude is not Greek: cue angry dad who in half an hour sees his wrong ways and accepts his son in law. Did i just spoil the ending?? No way, surely the general public aren't ignorant enough ...

This film was hyped intensively so although it seemed really funny and appealing to me, I was not sure if it would live up to expectations, but suprisingly it did. I must admit the opening to the film is a little boring, but that enables the characterisation to develop, and that is a great strength of the movie. If you are Greek like me or know a Greek family then you will be laughing right the way through this! I love the way you will recognise someone from you're own family in Toula's. Slighty exaggarated, but oh so true! I love the Dad & his obession wth putting Windex on everything...& it actually works!! lol I think they caputered the Greek traditions & lifestyle brilliantly.
