...idealic future. Music and lyrics works because it is so undeniably, crushingly, overwhelmingly, intoxicatingly.... lovely. There is a stigma attatched to the romantic comedy genre (some may say fairly, I would argue not) that makes people think that it is one of little or no merit to a serious movie goer - but this film embodies everything that is good about the genre... its sweet, emotional, intellegent and actually has something to say about growing-up, ... ...all.
First and foremost Music and Lyrics is a film about romance and how you find it in the strangest and most unlikely of places. It completely succeeds as a romance because the central relationship is surprisngly mature and unhollywood. The two leads feel like real people – with real emotional baggage, real fears and dreams and that makes the whole thing so much more resonant than the usual run of the mill fluff that the movie industry inflicts ...

...POP! are the fictional music legends of the 1980s, a veritable rip-off of WHAM!, and the movie cleverly inserts a pop song and music video to introduce the celebrity that Alex Fletcher once had. Unfortunately, in 1994 POP! separated, with Fletcher’s partner going off to be a multi-millionaire solo-artist and movie success, while Hugh Grant’s character bumbled around playing tribute concerts to his old music.
Now he’s on his knees, financially struggling ... ...in this film), the teenage music sensation of the moment and competition to the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, asks Alex Fletcher to write her next big single for her. The catch? It has to be ready in three days time.
Cue Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), a girl who turns up in Fletcher’s apartment to water his plants while her friend is away for a couple of days. Seemingly an annoying distraction, it quickly turns out that the hypochondriacally ...

...really looks like a naff music promo from the 80s, from the dreadful clothes and haircuts, to the ludicrous dance moves, the cheap effects and the soft-focus close-ups of the band members. Using it over the end credits however is a trifle self-indulgent, even if it provides an epilogue to the story in VH1-style information bubbles. In conjunction with a song-writing montage apparently cut out of the main narrative, it just increases the length instead ... ...venal professor.
The original music by Adam Schlesinger features some wonderfully tacky-sounding riffs on 80s manufactured pop – all naff rhymes, drum machines and synthesizers. There are shadows of early George Michael in the vomit-inducing ballad Grant croons through and to his credit he does sing all the tracks (not very well, but he tries). The Cora Corman tracks are equally amusing because they sound like plausible candidates for today’s glossy, ...

...to receive the DVD of Music and Lyrics as a birthday present from my small daughter (with no doubt a bit of advice from her daddy!) and very happily settled down to watch it the other night, ensconced with a glass of wine and a box of chocolates. There is also an incredibly tight deadline.
Fortunately for Alex, hovering on the edge of his life is Sophie Fisher, who is employed to look after his plants. Sadly, she is unable to do much for the plants, but Alex overhears her singing and making up her own lyrics one day! He seizes the opportunity and an unlikely but successful partnership.
Even luckier is the fact that the pop princess ...

Advantages: Kristen Johnston is excellent in her role albeit a minor part. Disadvantages: The film just isn't funny, it wasted 100 minutes of my life.
Having heard good things about 'Music and Lyrics' I was really quite looking forward to sitting down and watching it on an evening. I got the popcorn on the ready, set the DVD to play and waited for the credits to roll. As soon as the film began however I knew that I'd wasted my hard earned cash and in paying £4.99 to buy this from Play.com I'd been completely ripped off. I must admit that the genre of romantic comedy isn't exactly my favourite in ... ...that unsurprisingly plays exactly that in every film that he stars. Whilst Hugh Grant does come across as an incredibly weak person, I must admit that I do quite enjoy some of his films such as 'About A Boy', 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and to a lesser extent 'Bridget Jones Diary' (although it is entirely over rated).
So what's so bad about 'Music and Lyrics'? Well, the script for a start. Many of the jokes here just fail to make me laugh and ...

...a review on the DVD Music & Lyrics.
I bought this DVD yesterday after watching it a few months ago.I love Drew Barrymore acting. So i bought it as i do with most of her films.
The Story

Drew Barry more stars as Sophie Fisher - his plant watering lady.
Alex has been asked to write a song for the current pop legend Cora and ... ...enjoyable to watch.
The music was very poppy - but the song the made in this movie was excellent - very romantic. Very good movie.
The ending was very good - it caught you off guard for a few scenes and you thought alex fletcher was a prat - but hes not.
The story is amazing - how 2 strangers meet out of weird circumstances, fall in love, make a record and create a beautiful friendship.

...to come up with the music and lyrics to Cora's next song, the only thing that is holding him back is he is good at putting the music together but not the lyrics.
Here enters Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) who has been asked by her friend to water Alex's plants in his apartment. While Alex is playing a tune on this piano she starts singing, Alex is amazed by her lyrics and tries to persuade her to help him but she gets scared and leaves. Alex eventually ... ...has her own take on music and ends up changing the music and tempo of the song, therefore loosing the whole meaning of the original love song to Sophie's disgust. When Sophie tries to talk to Cora about this she finds Alex is quite happy to let Cora do what ever she wants with the song which annoys Sophie.
Throughout the film Alex and Sophie work close together and end up falling in love. As the film goes on their characters end up clashing which ...

Advantages: Good fun film with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. Disadvantages: A little forgettable.
Music and Lyrics is a romantic comedy released in 2007 starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore as the two main characters Alex Fletcher and Sophie Fisher. I have (like with most films I write about!!!) wanted to watch this film since it was out in the cinema, the trailers made it seem like a great rom-com and a wonderful feel good movie. So when it came on Sky Movies this week, I thought I'd give it a go. I had been told by a friend of mine that it ... ...But when Cora changes the music to the lyrics, and jazzes it up to the extent the romance of the song is ruined. But when Sophie goes to tell her to change it back, Alex thinks his career could be compromised and tries to desuade her causing friction between the two and an argument which causes Sophie to leave. As usual I won't give away the ending and theres not really anything else I can say without giving it away! The storyline goes in a basic ...

...in fact, for a massive music star, even though he didn’t ever write any lyrics for his own songs. At a loss, he asks Sophie help him out, and thus begins a partnership and yep you've guessed it, a romantic relationship. There are the usual ups and down, fallings out and makings up that are so standard in romcoms, but I didn’t really feel a spark between Alex and Sophie and I didn’t believe they actually fell for each other. The reason for the falling ... ...get together at the end totally unbelievable.
Hugh Grant is great at comedy and his facial expressions are second to none, and the dance moves, ala Love Actually, brought some much needed laughs to this film, which did fall a bit flat on the comedy front. But other than the great dance moves by Hugh, most jokes were unlaughable, and Drew looked pretty bored throughout most of the film. The best laughs, in fact come from 3rd Rock From The Sun’s Kristen ...

...of fun poked at the music industry - including old videos of Grant's 'Wham' style band and also in the shape of 'Cora Corman' a young dancing, chanting diva style star (albeit with a heart of gold) who Grant finds himself dueting with. Grant trying to be 'hip' and get back into the music business also provides some good laughs. There is a good supporting cast who add to the laughs too. I was pleasantly surprised about the music in the film too - ... ...film ends well with a music channel style video of one of Grant's characters old video's (again v. funny) with speech bubbles telling the story of where he is now. Advantages: it'll keep you entertained for a couple of hours. Disadvantages: it's a chick click, but it's either an advantage or a disadvantage on how you look at it.
Music and Lyrics is a chick flick, I won't deny that. However, it's a fun chick flick, one that I can actually enjoy. The movie starts out with a music video of the fictional band PoP! Singing their hit song "PoP! Goes my heart." I admit, it was the cheesiest thing I'd ever seen. Once we moved past the cheesy (and really well done) beginning the story unfolds. Alex Fletcher (portrayed by Hugh Grant) was the lead singer in the PoP! It's now 20 years ... ...Although he's better at writing music then he is lyrics, Alex accepts because he's desperate. Enter Sophie Fisher (portrayed by Drew Barrymore), she's the lady who's been hired to water Alex plants and she comes while Alex is working with a lyricist on "Way back into Love." After interrupting the lyricist one too many times Sophie is hired to help Alex and the "angel of death" lyricist is booted out. Sophie and Alex spend the next 3 days together, ...

Music And Lyrics is without a doubt one of the most witty and intelligently entertaining romantic comedies I have seen in many years.

Music and lyrics is nice, it really is but it isn't anything to get excited about. The film as a whole is just another cute little film that no one will ever really take seriously and why should they? It's another film that's just easy to follow. Advantages: Good music, good acting, an odd-coupling that works, romantic comedy. Disadvantages: Not 2 keen on Cora Coreman's songs, but that's for everyone else to decide.
...'POP' usuaully 'POP's' kind of music would send me out of the cinema, 80's pop music is not really my kind of thing, but 'POP GO'S MY HEART' you'll be singing for days. Hugh Grant's charecter is called Alex Fletcher and like a said before he's from a famous 80's band called POP, for over 15 years he's been trying to get gigs, and sell his album but to no avail, until they get a call from the most up & coming singer, Cora Coreman. Hugh Grant panics so gets in some one to help, but while they're talking about what lyrics to use, his plant woman sings a few bars of a song, that Hugh Grant's charecter loves. Drew Barrymore again plays the quirky 30 something girl, who hasn't settled down yet, which always seems constant in her films, but her portrayle at Sophie the plant-care-taker woman is brilliant. This film is ...
