An adaptation of a 2,000 year old Chinese poem in which a fiercely independent young woman (Mulan) disguises herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place in the...
more...Imperial Army's campaign against the brutal hun leader Shan-Yu. Chock full of the usual Disney delights; breathtaking animation, catchy songs, and a funny little animal (this time, a tiny guardian dragon voiced by the resilient and newly kid-friendly Eddie Murphy).

For the Love of her Family
Review of Mulan (Animated) by 15091983

Advantages: read above
Disadvantages: none

...is! The film begins with Mulan being prepared to have a dinner with the potential in laws but as always, she messes up somehow and again disgraces the family name. Mulan always feels upset for letting her parents down time after time even though she tries so hard. Set in China in the 5th century, the Emperor at the time calls upon one male member of each family to defend China from attack from the Huns (the badies). Unlucky for them, Mulan’s ... Read review

My daughters' introduction to feminism
Review of Mulan (Animated) by wivabef

Advantages: Strong, thinking characters -- a spectacular role model for my daughters
Disadvantages: In the end, they hint at romance. Doh!

...heck, everybody was mad because Mulan was not the Mulan they all knew and loved -- an honest to goodness, accepted military figure in chinese history and not someone who had to sneak into the army. But, after the third or fourth viewing I said, "Get over it! So what if Eddie Murphy is an ebonics-talking dragon in ancient china! It's funny!" I like Ming-Na's "Mulan" as a role model for my daughter, who always says, "Mulan saved the day again!" ... Read review

disney's take on the orient
Review of Mulan (Animated) by flipflopgirl

Advantages: a laugh a minute, good talent behind the voices
Disadvantages: the odd scary scene for very young children.

...and dignity is everything. Mulan loves her family, and would do anything for them, but she just can’t seem to help herself. When the Huns invade China, the Emperor decrees that one man from every family must sign up to fight in the war. Fa Zhou is ready to take on this task for the honour of his country, a desire that Mulan simply doesn’t understand. Her father has already done his part, and would most likely be killed if he were to go off to war. ... Read review

Advantages: typical Disney Classic
Disadvantages: a few scary scenes

...with Mulan. On the way Mulan encounters many people who will become her friends (particularly the comedy trio that she trains with), and some deadly enemies, as they fight to save the life of the Emperor and ultimately save China. Can the Captain train these "misfits" to become the best army in China? It’s a story of adventure, fun and romance, with Mulan falling for the captain of the army, but will anyone find out her secret? If they do, the ... Read review

A Taste Of The Orient Disney Style
Review of Mulan (Animated) by KarenUK

Advantages: great story, cute characters, good for all ages
Disadvantages: none

Mulan is quite an unusual film for Disney to make and they do it very well. It is an enchanting story with great characters and wonderful animation. The story is that Mulan lives in China, where as a woman, she is destined to get married and follow the traditional role. But Mulan is not a traditional kind of girl and often makes mistakes and feels she will never please her father. After messing things up with the Matchmaker (picture a Chinese ... Read review

Firecracker
Review of Mulan (Animated) by DiazX

Advantages: Good modern Disney yarn
Disadvantages: Cute factor is sometimes a little too high

When I first encounter Mulan it was with a bit of mild irritation, Grandparents had bought it as an incidental gift. “Oh I just saw it on the stand and thought that’d be nice, Molly would like that.” I wish I had Fifteen pounds to fritter away on a whim!! As it turned out Molly didn’t like it immediately, she watched the first twenty minutes and thought it was boring so turned it off in favour of Snow White (another grandparent purchase). We later ... Mulan kicks some ass
Review of Mulan (Animated) by drusilla

Advantages: Original plot, excellent animation and Eddy Murphy
Disadvantages: Unrealistic and predictable

...flawless. Set in ancient China, Mulan (Ming Na-Wen. Singing voice, Lea Salonga) is the story of a young woman who is somewhat different from the other girls in her village. Bold and forward, she is nothing like the decorous Geisha’s of her day. On failing to impress the matchmaker, Mulan is determined to bring honour to her family. So when her ill and elderly Father is sent for to defend his country against the Huns, Mulan runs away to ... Read review

Love the dragon.
Review of Mulan (Animated) by elisae

Advantages: Funny and entertaining
Disadvantages:

Mulan is the best Disney film since Lion King, and that says a lot. Mulan is the young chinese girl who messes everything up at the matchmaker, and embarrases her family. She just don't know how to be a proper girl. Her father is called to war, but she goes instead of him, to save his life. She pretends to be a boy, and does a good job. To help her she has got a tiny dragon, who in his own way is trying to get back into the good book s of the ancestors. ... Read review

...fight in the war though Mulan can not bear to see her aging and crippled father go to war. She disguises herself as a man and bravely takes her father's place in the imperial army. Along the way her ancestors send Mushu – a small not dragon (Note not Lizard!) to bring her home safely. Though Mushu wishing to be once again a gardenia takes Mulan into the heart of the war and where the main plot begins. Opinion: I had a personal interest to see ... Read review

How much do you love your father?
Review of Mulan (Animated) by tiger645

Advantages: Great, very funny and well thought out!
Disadvantages: Sometimes a little scary for very young children

This film is set in the past and is about a young girl who goes and fights in the Chinese army against the invading Huns because she believes her father to be too old. She has to disguise herself as a boy as girls were not allowed in the army. When she joins there are many problems she has to deal with because she is a girl for example having a wash! However in the end she manages to save the army but the rest of the army discovers she is a girl. ... Read review

Advantages: truely spectacular special effects with a touching plot. An all round Disney masterpiece
Disadvantages: none.

...to "stick to their duties". Mulan is the flower of this wonderful tale as we, the audience, watch a girl who is sure of her mind blossom and striveing to achieve honour for her family with amazing consequences... It is refreshing for Disney to have a female character play such a spirited role, even though it may go against the somewhat typical format of earlier Disney cartoons it works surprisingly well. Having said that, there are some things ... Read review
