Come What May Review ofMoulin Rouge (Special Edition) (DVD)by

Advantages: A refreshing change from anything I've ever seen Disadvantages: Being so different some people may not get it
For Valentines Day I decided to rent a romance from the library and cuddle up in front of in for the evening with my hubby. My dad, brother and sister went to see it when it came out in the cinema and came back raving about it. It didn't look like my cup of tea but as it was Valentines Day I thought I'd give it a whirl.
It is hard to know where to start with this film. There is so much packed into this movie. I really liked this film. A large part ...

...a play at the infamous Moulin Rouge. Hailed as a writing genius, Christian must persuade the delectable Satine to agree to the production but finds himself instantly in love with the vision of loveliness. Being France though it's never as simple as it seems and following a misunderstanding, Christian is mistaken for rich financier the Duke of Worcester who Satine's boss, Zidler, is hoping will pay for a refurbishment for the Moulin Rouge. Caught in ...

Advantages: Over 6 hours of extra material; Colourful, exhuberant, entertaining film; Amazing soundtrack Disadvantages: I would have liked some PC bonuses; Some of the songs are too catchy for their own good!
Moulin Rouge is a classic love story, given the Spectacular Spectacular treatment by visionary director Baz Luhrmann. It is a musical of such magnificent proportions, of such audacity, of such colour and such exuberance that I fell in love with it when I first saw it at the cinema, and which I had to buy for my DVD collection when I found it on BOGOF at HMV earlier in the week. I couldn't quite believe my luck, having found out just how good the DVD ...

Advantages: An extremely entertaining film Disadvantages: Not to everyone’s tastes
...title for my opinion of Moulin Rouge, though I read a couple of opinions about the film, I just wasn’t expecting what I saw, but as you may guess I found it to be superb.
~~The Facts~~
In this musical/comedy/tragedy, set in and around the Moulin Rouge night club in the 1900’s, Christian tells his story about coming to Paris, to the bohemian lifestyle, to become a writer and write about love that he’s never experienced. He soon gets involved with ...

THE RAUNCHY RED MILL Review ofMoulin Rouge (Special Edition) (DVD)by
mrsandrewsjk
Advantages: For me - seeing Jim Broadbent singing 'like a Virgin' Disadvantages: If you dont like musicals - don't watch it.
Moulin Rouge - translated means Red Mill but this film sure ain't about grinding flour! I was lucky enough to see the film before UK release in Adelaide back in June last year. I wasn't sure what to expect - the Voulez Vous Couchez music video looked a bit raunchy so I had it in my head there would be lots of sex (you know what imagination is!)
A 20th Century Fox film directed by Baz Luhrmann and brilliantly choreographed by John O'Connell it stars ...

Advantages: Technically great and great acting by a great cast Disadvantages: first half is predictable to a certain extent
...town of Monmarte, Paris where Moulin Rouge, the famous or infamous nightclub resides. The nightclub is owned by Zidler (Jim Broadbent) who is incorrigible. He meets some friends who are nonconformists with a bohemian attitude. This group of friends is led by a dwarf Toulouse Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who convinces Christian to be the writer in the group. They arrange for an encounter with Satine (Nicole Kidman) who is a famous courtesan. She knows ...

...the story of the infamous Moulin Rouge and his one and only love Satine (Nicole Kidman). This leads to the opening scene of the Moulin Rouge. Baz Luhrmann (the man who brought us advice on sunscreen in the form of that number one hit) definitely loves having every part of the screen jam-packed with action and this is apparent from the first scene inside the infamous Paris club Moulin Rouge. You will be hard pressed to try and tear yourself away from ...

...a hotel across from the Moulin Rouge, a night club – host to some of the most colourful characters you are ever likely to meet – this is where Christian meets Satine – a beautiful courtesan and a wannabe actress who is willing to pay anything to realise her dream (i.e. marry a duke (Richard Roxburgh) who will give her fame). What she didn’t bargain on, however, was falling in love – with the wrong person.
Take these beginnings and mix in a wide ...

Moulin Rouge has topped my all-time favourite film list. It's one of the most CrEaTiVe, DaZzLiNg, ExHiLaRaTiNg and SeXy films of today - it's a whole new cinematic experience and you won't have seen anything like it before. The director, Baz Luhrman has created a whole new film genre, making Hollywood musicals trendy again while at the same time bringing it bang up to date with a cleverly modern score, a star-studded cast, and a brilliant team of ...

The meeting with Satine however goes more smoothly than planned, after she mistakes Christian for the wealthy Duke of Worcester, who Satine has been told to seduce in to providing money to refurbish the Moulin Rouge, by Harry Sidler boss.
Christian and Satine retire to her room, where Satine the smouldering temptress ...

...that there was an original Moulin Rouge out in the 1950s, 1953 if memory serves me correctly (?)
The film tells the story of the Moulin Rouge – the infamous Paris nightclub where the rich and influential come to play with the young and beautiful of the entertainment underworld (to paraphrase one of the lines in the film). Nicole Kidman plays the part of the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, the most beautiful of all the girls who “strut ...

Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! is the story of Satine and Christian, a would-be-actress courtesan and an aspiring, penniless writer respectively. It is a love story, a tragedy, a comedy, a musical, a farce, a fairy tale and a feast for the eyes and ears. It is, in a word, WONDERFUL.
The Story
Christian (Ewan McGregor) is an aspiring writer who goes to Paris to pursue his ambition and live the Bohemian romantic ideal of beauty, truth and ...

...Zidler, the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge nightclub.
The plot is simple – Christian (McGregor) lands a writing job at the Moulin Rouge, which is all very handy as he lives downstairs from a motley collection of bohemians who perform on stage at that very club, and can see the huge red windmill on its roof from his window. These performers include the alcoholic dwarf Toulouse Lautrec, and a narcoleptic Argentinean acrobat who has designs ...

Advantages: Very good performances from Ewan and Nicole Disadvantages: A little to fast to start with
Moulin Rouge is surprising to say the least; it takes risks that immediately open it up to criticism, supplying stunning visuals, flamboyant melodies and excessiveness that borders on the dangerous. It is designed to be head turning, and at times with its dizzying speed it seems foolish, almost ludicrous as we almost fall into the kaleidoscope that is Moulin Rouge.
Set in Paris during the turn of the century, we enter the sordid nightlife of the ...

...decades (certainly in my lifetime), Moulin Rouge is a novel, inventive take on the genre which deserves to become a classic, and will no doubt inspire a number of imitators. The past few years have seen several attempts at using existing songs in a new musical context (Everyone Says I Love You and Love’s Labours Lost are the most obvious examples), but this is the most successful of these. A bizarre variety of styles and sources make it into the mix, ...
