...movies, and then there is Meet Joe Black. The pace of the film, which runs at just under 3 hours, is unlike anything I ever witnessed. Every line of dialogue, every interaction between the characters is stttttttreeeeeeetchhhhed out. And given some pregnant pauses and long drawn out eye contact. Let me give you an example:
Sample scene between Joe Black and love interest Susan
"I have something…..to tell you."
"Oh?…you…..do? "
30 seconds of "meaningful" ... ...seconds of flashing eyes. The violins swell. "Oh…you are…..you are…Joe…."
"Yes. I am…."
The violins crash into crescendo. The characters embrace for another two minutes without saying anything. Then,
"I…feel…"
"I know….."
and so on. You think I am exaggerating? I'm not. Drag that kind of carry on over three hours, and during every exchange, and you begin to get the picture. It's a shame, really, because the actors are actually pretty decent. ...

Advantages: Great acting, enjoyable despite the subject of film Disadvantages: Slightly weak in places
I am at a loss as to how rate this film. On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, on the other, there were a couple of occasions were it looked really wooden in the plot and acting.
The film was on BBC1 last night at 9pm as I settled down to watch a pic of a genre that I really like, i.e. fictional drama, yet the film did not entice me enough when it first came out to go the cinema and fork out £5 plus.
It stars two heavyweight, mega ... ...William (aka Bill) Parrish, is a multimillionaire publishing magnet, well known for his strength of character and resolve. When Bill suddenly starts hearing a voice talking to him (suffice to say, it is only audible by him), he seems to wonder what on earth is going on - quite logical really. A short while later, he is visited by none other than the Grim Reaper himself, who (if you can personify Mr. Death Instigator) has possessed the body of an ...

Advantages: sir anthony and brad pitt, a new and original story Disadvantages: too many long pauses
When this first came out in November 1998, I was quite young, (young enough not to know what the big deal about Brad Pitt was, and young enough not to understand the true brilliance of Sir Anthony Hopkins). Back then I thought that this film was rubbish. Then, about two years ago, my mum brought it home, so I thought that I would give it a shot and I was not disappointed.
The film is about a successful media tycoon, William Parrish (Hopkins) living ... ...Susan (Claire Forlani), is in a relationship with his brilliant, yet slimy colleague, Drew, (Jake Weber). One day whilst on her way to her job as a doctor at the hospital, she meets a fascinating, attractive young man in a coffee shop. The two establish an instant spark, but do not discover anything about each other. The two leave the coffee shop without exchanging names or numbers. As they walk away in different directions, Pitt turns to run after ...

Advantages: A really pensive film Disadvantages: Maybe a little too long
Meet Joe Black is in my opinion a very strange film. It's rather long at nearly 3 hours in length yet the storyline is very simple. The way in which it is constructed however and because of the nature of the story itself makes the film a rather pensive one and so the 3 hour length gives the audience time to think and reflect on what the story is trying to tell you. The film begins with a chance meeting between Claire, a millionaire's daughter and ... ...with the common conception that Meet Joe Black is a train-wreck of a film. It simple isn't. Ok it is long and with no real action in terms of battles or major suspense scenes this may be a tad too long but in my opinion I think that this film is trying to make a statement about life and about death and does so in a way that makes one simple the continuation of the other. I would therefore highly recommend this film to anyone who fancies seeing a ...

Advantages: Some decent acting, interesting plot Disadvantages: Too long
...this got to do with Meet Joe Black then? Well, it’s a remake as well – Death Takes A Holiday was made in 1934 and starred Fredric March as Death and Evelyn Venable as Grazia.
However, as with all older movies remade in recent years, it needs a bit of polish to modernise the settings and story, so out goes all the royalty bits, and in comes the modern business world.
*** Basic Plot Outline ***
Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is rapidly approaching ... ...excuses himself and goes to meet the guest. In the library, he again hears the spooky voice, but this time it’s accompanied by a body.
It’s the handsome stranger from the coffee shop who was talking to Susan. He informs Bill that he is, in fact, Death and the body is just a vessel for him to occupy while he is on Earth. He tells Bill that Bill is to teach him the ways of the world, and as long as he is entertained, then Bill will not die. Bill initially ...

What if "Death" was a person, what would he look like? I’m sure many people’s minds conjure up images such as the "Death" character in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey, the grim reaper, with his long black flowing robes and a scythe, and if you’ve ever read any Terry Pratchet’s Disc world novel’s it is likely that you will have a similar view. Never did I ever think that Death could look like it did in "Meet Joe Black" ... ...in fact it feels so weird that I am convinced there is something wrong with me!
Anthony Hopkin’s plays William Parrish, a very wealthy media tycoon, who is loved by all his family, and greatly respected by those that he works with. He is getting on in years, his wife is no longer alive, and he has two daughters. His obvious favourite is Bill’s daughter, Susan, played by Claire Forlani, who is a young doctor. Bill wakes during the night ...

Advantages: Good acting Disadvantages: May be too long for some people
...The basic idea behind Meet Joe Black is that Death decides to take a holiday and become mortal for a short while to experience life. It, takes a body (Brad Pitt) and makes a deal with a successful business tycoon (Anthony Hopkins) to "put off" the tycoon's death for as long as Death feels it can take for a vacation. The strength of the film is the acting of the three central characters, Death, the tycoon and his younger daughter. Death takes the ... ...met, in a coffee bar, and "likes." Naturally when the daughter meets Death there is a case of mistaken identity which allows the film to explore the nature of identity. Another "strand" of the film is the tycoon's business and how a "young turk" tries to take it over for the wrong reasons. There is a running joke in the film about "death and taxes". This is a long film running for 2 hours 47 minutes with a gentle and intimate feel to it. Pitt and ...

So what is my problem with this film. I'll tell you what my problem is. I spent over two hours watching a mildly entertaining film which turned into a schmaltzy, cinematic train wreck in the last ten minutes. I haven't seen a film so morally lost of compromised since In and Out. The Focus Group Demon has infested this film, and how.
The premise is that Death takes a shine to the daughter of a wealthy publishing magnate who is about to die. He steals ... ...taken a shine to in a coffee shop. Lets not worry about the poor, now deceased, sap. He then arrives at Daddy's house and cuts a deal so that he (Death) can have a vacation.
Ok so far ? Bergman this isn't, lets make that clear. I won't spoil the alleged plot but suffice it to say there are three messages to take home from the Hollywood School of Moral Ambiguity: 1) rich self made men are lovely and fluffy and go straight to heaven. 2) as long as ...

Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, the Devil visits earth for a tour and falls in love, sounds excellent, looked excellent, is it excellent?
No, the film is very long and cumbersome and at times a little ridiculous, such as the devil eating peanut butter. The film is not that bad, Hopkins gets a reprieve to be the Devil's (Pitt's) guide on the earth, Pitt can pull the plug on Hopkins at any time and while this is going on Pitt falls for Hopkins daughter.

This would not have been the type of movie I would have pulled off the shelf in the video store, and brought home to watch. I had looked at it in the rental store, read the box, and put it back. Advantages: Not as bad as people say Disadvantages: A bit cheesy at the end?
This film got panned by a lot of critics on its general release, but I don't think it was all that bad. It can be a bit confusing, especially when Brad Pitt switches characters, but is worth persevering with.
The film centres around Brad Pitt as Death, and his relationship with a rich industry magnate and his daughter. The daughter, played by Claire Forlani, meets the first Brad Pitt character in a deli, and takes an instant shine to him. The father is informed of his fate by Death, but chooses to conceal it from his daughter. The whole thing is confused by the daughter and Death falling for each other, so after a bit of bargaining, and the revealing of the truth, a deal is struck, as the father is taken and at the same time, the original ...

Advantages: Has a certain 'magical' quality about it Disadvantages: Can be very slow at times
Meet Joe Black is one of those films that definately shouldn't be watched in bed when tired. It's numerous scenes of people gazing into each others eyes and generally slow moving plot would be a good cure for any insomniac. Still, I love the film and both Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins turn in great performances. The plot concerns a sucessful businessman (Hopkins) who is told that he is going to die by the Grim Reaper in human form (Pitt). However ... ...himself falling in love with Hopkins' daughter played adequatly by the lovely CLaire Forliani. What we, the audience are treated to over the 3 hours of the film is a genuinely moving and well made film which pulls us in so that we have a genuine interest in what the characters do. It's not for everyone mind you, if it had been half an hour shorter I'm sure it would have done better at the box office. Rent it, see if you like it. ...
