...the confusion which surrounded the man and his actions. Kaufman was infamous for his charades and practical jokes, many of which were in dubious taste and are highlighted in this film. Even when he died of lung cancer at a very young age (35), many were disbelieving; thinking that it was just another ruse to satisfy his need to amuse or shock and push the boundaries of taste. In fact here was reported to have been a 'Welcome Home Andy Party' on the ... ...feel some empathy for the man to take an interest in what is unfolding. It seems appropriate that Carrey should play the lead here as he himself seems to elicit the whole spectrum of reactions to his performances and on screen persona. That aside, Carrey has an aura where you just wonder what is going through that mind of his. In playing Kaufman, that seems ideal aisde from the fact that he also does a perfect Latka Gravas accent.

Advantages: Good performance from Jim Carrey. Disadvantages: We don’t get to know much about Kaufman bar recreations of his performances.
...the audience to like the man for what he was: a funny, kooky guy.
In short, we witness Jim Carrey recreate many of Kaufman’s routines notoriously as an Elvis impersonator (superb considering the circumstances....Carrey’s imitating Kaufman who’s imitating Elvis
after all....).
But what of such unpleasant characters created by Kaufman such as the lounge singer Tony Clifton? Of his need to wrestle with women in public performances? ... ...all given an airing BUT never fully answered.
Kaufman never did keep a journal, which may make the film feel as though it was nothing but just speculation and the script and story by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski is very polite and respectful.
It never presumes anything OR prepares to take a chance AND expects us to fully understand things with cursive and offhand proceedings (such as the appearance of Kaufman’s girlfriend Lynne as ...

...top all the time.
Man on the moon is the story of Andy Kaufman who rose to fame in America in the TV sitcom “Taxi” which also starred Judd Hirch (Golblums dad in Independence Day). What was more interesting about Andy than his TV show appearances was his own comedy routines which were quite unlike comedy routines of the time. Sketches dramatised in the movie include “Tony Clifton” and his famous rhyming (chicken - lickin ... ...bad guy wrestler in which Andy spent several years wrestling women in his own inter-gender wrestling matches much to the disgust of most people who didn’t realise it was a joke.
The movie follows Andy from his early childhood to his stand up routines and finally to his tragic death from cancer in 1984 aged 35. The movie tells the story well and you get a good sense of who Andy Kaufman was. It's not the greatest story ever told but it is interesting ...

Advantages: Extremely good performance by Jim Carrey, brilliantly funny in places, worthy conclusion Disadvantages: Courtney Love, could reveal the method behind the madness better.
"Man On The Moon" certainly has the capacity to raise an eyebrow or two within the audience as it presents a number of unexpected surprises. The majority of which are revealed in the highly entertaining plot, though it is worth adding that a solidly impressive performance from Jim Carrey is one of the films major surprises. Perhaps I'm being a little harsh on Carrey, but prior to watching "Man On The Moon" I had only been impressed by his abilities ... ...the rather excellent "The Truman Show." In "Man On The Moon" Carrey plays the role of Andy Kaufman in a biopic about the American comedian, and according to those who have seen Kaufmans actual performances Carrey is extraordinarily accurate in his portrayal. For those who have not heard of Kaufman - and I knew next to nothing about him before the film - he was an American entertainer who shocked and confused his audiences with a variety of alarming ...

Made by the same creative team behind The People Vs Larry Flynt, this biopic charts the rise and fall of a similarly misunderstood character, albeit one who died from cancer at the age of 35. Although only really known in this country for his role as Latka, the foreign mechanic from Taxi, Andy Kaufman was a cult figure in America, wowing audiences with his bizarre performances on Saturday Night Live, before throwing it all away by taking his mixture ... ...unpalatable extremes. It seems that Kaufman was more interested in revolutionising comedy as we know it rather than being a success, and rejected fame in spectacular fashion. In one scene, he responds to calls from an audience to repeat Latka's catchphrase ("Tank you veddy much!") ad infinitum by reading to them F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby in its entirety. He later goes on to staging wrestling matches against female opponents, and relying ...

Advantages: Jim Carrey gives a great performance.... Disadvantages: ....that a losy script can't help but ruin it.
Why should we care about an unconventional comedian who died some years ago? And of course why should we indeed. There really was no need for this film and throughout this film I was disappointed by
the overall product. This was nothing more than the greatest sketches that Kaufman ever did. There is no attempt to try and connect these sketches into a series of events and why he indeed, he did what he
did and how he became the person he was. And ... ...before, I was expecting more about him. It is only until he gets terminal lung cancer (well, aren’t they
all) that we see the remotest of character development. His childhood is all over in around ninety seconds. Trying to dig into Kaufman’s personal side all they seem to come up with is shots of the
audience whooping it up. the cast is certainly game and Jim Carrey puts in a very good impersonation of him (although one can’t help but wonder what ...

Advantages: Well acted and engaging life story Disadvantages: some may find the type of humour gets a bit irritating
...honest negativity about the real man behind the funny voices, but all in all it’s a good watch.
A quick look at his childhood merely tells us that Kauffman wanted to perform on stage from a very young age, and wanted to entertain. His humour turns out to be very original and against the grain of the other comedians out there at the time. He wants to make you think, he wants to offend, he wants to ingratiate.
There isn’t too much background to Andy ... ...blanks by watching his personality unfold, to a certain extent, throughout the film.
Courtney Love plays a very background role as Kauffman’s girlfriend, and hardly says 2 words.
Danny de vito plays Kauffman’s manager, he takes a chance on his act, giving him his first chance at success.
We get to the end of this original, alternative, comedian’s life, when he dies of lung cancer, aged thirty something. But before he goes he must try to convince ...

When I say that Jim Carrey is Andy Kaufman, I really mean that. He completely immerses himself in the character, giving his most remarkable performance of his career. The fact that he was not nominated for an Oscar for this was a complete disaster. We get great performances from Courtney Love, Kaufman's girlfriend, Danny De Vito, his manager, and Paul Giamatti, his best friend. This film is named after the incredible REM song of the same name, and they also provide a beautiful music score, as well as their fantastic new song "Great Beyond". I have to say that this is definitely one of my top 5 favorite films ever, no question!
Starting off in a kind of querky scene where Andy Kauffman (portrayed fantastically by Jim Carey) is introducing us to the start of the movie. The character he uses is taken from "Foreign man" an act of Andy's that always had the audience in stitches, as he proclaimed he was from a small island in the caspian sea named caspiar (it sunk)... this character arrived ... ...who could be taken both literally and from a comedy point of view. Man on the moon is a film based on a true story about actor Andy Kauffman. The movie starts with Andy, played by Jim Carry, as a young boy dreaming of standing in front of a crowd full of people. The movie gows through his career - how he started, how he got his big break, and of course how he got his wife. It is a funny movie at first but later on it justifies why it is known as a drama. This movie is suited for everyone and I assure you that you ...

...you will probably not 'get' Man on the Moon... those of you who do will find it a puzzling, confusing but at all times fascinating ride on a rollercoaster tale of a comedian who makes even Mr Carrey - himself a troubled soul, redeemed only by the excellent 'The Truman Show' - seem normal.
There is no point going into the plot - and I am not sure I could anyway - ... its a biopic with some excellent cameos from the original Taxi cast. Danny De Vito ... ...say? I am not sure whether Carrey's opening scenes as Latka Gravas - the very character Kaufmann seemeds to loathe - is a little too self-parodying but it does give you the warning that there is some 'dramatic interpretation'. But after that, we settle back for a comic and visual treat that really leaves one with both a warm feeling for a misunderstood genius and a slightly uncomfortable sense that one would probably have afllen for all the stunts ...

Advantages: Courtney Love and Jim Carrey's acting Disadvantages: Andy Kaufman's humour is an acquired taste
Andy Kaufman, comic genius? - I don’t think so on the evidence of this movie. I went to this movie having little knowledge of Andy Kaufmann other than he played that weird bloke in the show Taxi and I came out of the movie none the wiser to his talents or why he was so popular in America. Despite trying to be different this movie is a straightforward biopic of Andy Kaufman showing his days from Taxi to his tragic death in the eighties. Jim Carrey ... ...skills have progressed from his promising performance in the Truman Show. Danny Devito who plays his manager surprisingly is not annoying, however the tragedy in this movie is how little Courtney Love is used. She acts everyone else off the screen and yet she is given little more to do than look starry eyed at Andy. Overall this movie has one fundamental flaw for me, I just don’t think he’s funny. Fake bogeys, wrestling women, the awful lounge singer ...

Advantages: One of Carrey's finest. Cast, Direction.... Disadvantages: Don't know.
Ok, this film may have won Carrey a golden globe but as far as the UK is concerned, it hasn't been a big hit. People label this film one of Carrey's more 'serious' pieces, but there are many scenes where i find myself reall laughing. He really proves his acting ability in this though, not just a comedian.
The film is based on the life of Andy Kauffman (Latka from the real tv show 'Taxi'), who had an extraordinary life. Although the story is not ... ...well peiced together.
It has a really well chosen together cast, includluding Danny DeVito and Courtney Love which really make this film into an artistic classic.
The film starts off with Carrey (Andy) telling us that the film is at it's end and lets the real credits roll by while music runs to fend off people who would not enjoy the real content of the film.
It includes some fantastic moments and touches. And is really unmissible if you are a ...

I loathe Jim Carrey. I have not enjoied a single moment of his ridiculous career. He is unconvincing and annoying, which frustratingly, was ideal for this movie. Andy Kaufman was unconvincing and annoying - each character pathetic and shallow, showing off one aspect of the human condition, and milking it until it was funny; something Carrey has never managed to do. He milks it until the udders are sore, and then pulls a silly face. In this movie, ... ...between characters and manages to play them as Andy did. He sticks fairly closely to the routines, and shows off the man's work. As a movie, it's ok, but as a showcase of Kaufman, it's brilliant.
