FAIL!

Advantages: Good songs, some of the cast are having fun
Disadvantages: Poor singing; invisible choreography; badly written script; miscast actors; you want more?

...to make them meaningful. Mamma Mia is about a young girl (played by Amanda Seyfried, who looks disconcertingly like a mermaid) who is preparing for her own wedding on a deserted island somewhere in America. It's not made clear whereabouts this island is at any point during the film, but she has an American accent so presumably she lives somewhere nearby the ol' USA. She's not happy to get married until she finds out who her real father is, because ...
...watching for the first time. Mamma Mia is, perhaps, a film which works best on the second viewing. For her part, Streep is a game player, adding froth to an already overflowing film but doing so in a way which tries desperately to add to the film rather than detract. She's the only performer who you look forward to hearing, here. Indeed, aside from Streep; Seyfried's over-cute numbers (the nauseating highlight of the movie is her 'duet' with the ...

Don't believe the hype!

Advantages: Uplifting
Disadvantages: Drags at times

Mamma Mia as I’m sure you’ll all know is the 2008 smash hit musical based on the songs from Swedish 70’s pop band ABBA. Infact Mamma Mia was so successful that it actually broke the record originally set by Titanic way back in 1997 to be the highest grossing film in the UK of all time. The film was made on a budget of $52,000,000 and grossed an estimated $601,651,799. Mamma Mia has also become the biggest selling DVD of all time too, not bad eh? ...
...30th June 2008. Mamma Mia is directed by Phyllida Lloyd who’s well known for her extensive work in theatre. She was offered the chance to work on Mamma Mia way back in 1999. Mamma Mia, with exception to maybe the Ocean films probably has one of the best line ups I’ve ever seen. It stars: Meryl Streep (Death Becomes Her), Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls), Pierce Brosnan (James Bond), Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates Of The ...

Mamma Mia! How could I resist you?

Advantages: funny, ful of energy and the great timeless ABBA songs
Disadvantages: bit too silly in places, no really surprising plot turns

...elsewhere, but here in Prague Mamma Mia! has become a symbol of this summer, full of fun, dancing and singing, love, sun, friends, joy and happy ends. It was my first time that sitting in the cinema I would feel all the ppl there shared sth and created such a happy and cheerful atmosphere like this time when everybody sang along to the songs. '''Cast''' Meryl Streep - Donna Amanda Seyfried - Sophie Pierce Brosnan - Sam Colin Firth - Harry Stellan ...
...I think her performance of Mamma Mia! was the best song in the whole movie and the little show she gave with Christine Baranski and Julie Walters as The Dynamos was sheer fun, without any depth, but fun. As Streep herself said: "I'm really doing this to embarass my 20-sth-year-old children. The dancing will mortify them and they'll have to move to Alaska or some place like that." Streep's duet of The Winner Takes It All with Pierce Brosnan felt a ...

Some extra cheese with your Abba?

Advantages: Great music and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Hideously cheesy at times

When Sophie, who lives on an idyllic Greek island with her mother Donna, decides to get married, she wants absolutely everyone there. And that includes her father, whom she doesn't know. Finding a diary of her mothers from the year she was born, she discovers three possible names - Harry, Sam and Bill - tracks them down and sends each of them an invitation to her wedding, without informing Donna. Needless to say Donna is rather taken aback to see ...
...one is Sophie's father? And will finding out change her life? I was unsure about watching this film - I like old-fashioned musicals, but I wasn't sure what this would be like, particularly with a slew of well-known and respected actors suddenly turning into singers. However, rave reviews piqued my interest and as a child of the seventies/eighties I've always had a soft spot for Abba. And despite some reservations, I did enjoy the film - it is so ...

DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW? THIS FILM IS FAB!

Advantages: Funny, warm, great cast, great songs, a real feel-good film that will make you smile
Disadvantages: Very slightly inferior to the stage version

...to the cinema to see Mamma Mia with my mother-in-law (while my husband, son and youngest daughter saw Hancock). I saw the stage version of Mamma Mia in January this year and thought it was brilliant. I'm also a big Abba fan and have been for about thirty years, so I'm in the ideal demographic for this movie. The cinema was almost full and those seeing Mamma Mia were admittedly mainly women, but from the elderly down to young kids. There was a bit ...
...The basic plot to Mamma Mia (on stage and screen) is that Sophie is getting married. She's twenty and lives on a small Greek island with Donna, her single mother. Being brought up never knowing her father, Sophie discovers an old diary of her mother's and reading through it, she realises her father is one of three men - Harry, Sam or Bill. So she invites all three to her wedding, hoping that she'll recognise which one is her father and her wedding ...

Mamma Mia! but who's the pappa?

Advantages: fantastic feel good film
Disadvantages: none

Just a note before I start to say that this is a film only review due to the fact that as far as I know the DVD has not yet been released! I had a fabulous evening out at the cinema yesterday watching what must be the ultimate feel good film of the year! I had heard a lot about it and I was not disappointed - in fact I don't think I have smiled and laughed so much at a film for a long time! If you have not seen it it is well worth going to see! ...
...- the music of Abba (definitely a blast from my past!), a fun story line, an excellent line up (including the gorgeous Colin Firth and the fabulous Julie Walters) and all this against the beautiful backdrop of a Greek island! What more could I ask for! So what's it all about then? Well first of we meet young Sophie Sheridan who is soon to be married. She lives on a beautiful Greek island with her mum, Donna, but she has never known her dad. After ...

Mamma MIa - What more can you say :-)

Advantages: Great family fun
Disadvantages: None

...few nights ago we watched Mamma Mia on DVD, we initially saw it in the cinema soon after its release. The plot of the film is simple, like many good films. Sophie, a normal 20 year old girl (played by the until now unknown Amanda Seyfried) lives with her Mum, Donna (Meryl Streep) on a beautiful Greek island where they are trying to convert their house into a small hotel / B&B. Sophie is about to get married to Sky (Dominic Cooper) and would love ...
...her Mother isn’t sure who that is. Sophie finds her Mums diary and finds that it could be one of three men – Sam (Pierve Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) or Harry (Colin Firth) - so without her Mothers knowing she writes a letter to them (on behalf of her Mum) all inviting them to the wedding. Donna invites her 2 best friends Rosie (played by the fabulous Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski). The fun and games really start when everyone ...

MAMMA MIA! TAKE A CHANCE ON ME!

Advantages: A film that is suitable for young and old alike, that everyone can sing along to!
Disadvantages: The main plot device may need a bit of explaining to younger children.

Mamma Mia - Take a chance on me!! After all this is now the most successful UK film (overtaking Titanic) and the fastest selling DVD. I was lucky enough to see this musical on Broadway in New York, soon after it opened and really enjoyed it. I could not visualise how it would transfer to the screen - but I have to admit they have done a fantastic job (mostly) with near perfect casting (almost). A WORD OF WARNING - the film is rated PG with a warning ...
...this warning needed to be observed. After all, how do you explain to an eight year old that a girl and her mother may not know who her father is (from a choice of three). This point needs thought before you watch it for those tricky questions!!! Synopsis - This is a musical that has been written to fit the wonderful ABBA songs. As this is the case some of the songs have very tenous links - it has to be said. Nevertheless, the songs certainly give ...

MAMMA MIA - review from a Musical Novice

Advantages: Bright, loud and alot of fun
Disadvantages: Musical purists will not be impressed.

A bit of backstory first... Me and my other half often disagree and bicker about the movies we see. Our preferences are along traditional gender lines: ME - action movies, something intellectual or a bit juvenile will normally hit the spot. HER - something girlie: kookie or romantically inclined. She has seen Twilight 4 times and counting... Case in point was Juno,se loved it whilst I fell asleep halfway through! Never before could people be ...
...to grease the wheels slightly (and to earn a few brownie points into the bargain) I opted to see a film of her choice. "How about a musical?" I asked - "there's that adaption of the West End show with all the Abba songs in it." Now, for me a musical is something for theatrically minded ladies (and gents); the idea of someone bursting into song for no apparent reason is an anathema. It just does NOT compute. Still, Im always open to new experiences ...

Mama Mia

Advantages: Great singing, dancing, scenery
Disadvantages: None

If you love Abba, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep then this is the film for you. Mama Mia the undoubted hit of 2008, is a stage-to-film adaptation of the 1999 West End musical of the same name, based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA, with additional music also composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. The film did very well at the box office becoming the highest grossing film musical of all time and also became the most successful British ...
...film although I did not go crazy over it like a lot of people did, I heard stories of big groups of people going to the cinema and all singing along to the movie, no, not me, but I did like it. With any type of musical film you wonder how they are going to link the songs to the story because sometimes you get films that have a story and then the launch into these songs that don’t really have anything to do with the theme at all. However, Mama Mia ...

Not Just For Abba Fans

Advantages: Great performances, great fun, the songs (If you like Abba)
Disadvantages: Younger cast are a bit flat

...Christmas, my mum asked for Mamma Mia! on DVD because my dad wouldn't let her rent it. Come Christmas day and after eating copiously and drinking similarly we sat down (dad excluded) to watch (mercifully not the sing-a-long version). I was apprehensive. I'm not good with musicals and I'm definitely not good with Abba. Begrudgingly I joined in willing my loathing along. From minute one I thought, 'this is horrid', but by the end I was toe tapping ...

Mamma Mia! The DVD -- My Review

Advantages: great fun, good singing, dancing and acting
Disadvantages: a bit cheesy, some weak performances

The DVD version of Mamma Mia has been produced beautifully, recreating something that was so magical on the big screen that people feared it would scale down to DVD badly. They were wrong. Starting with the casing, you know that you are in for a great experience with Mamma Mia! The great photo on the front of the case speaks of fun filled Grecian escapades. The DVD offers not only the choice of play, special features, subtitles, language etc., but ...
...family. The plot of Mamma Mia! is good, considering the musical was written for the songs, not the songs for the musical. Converted from the plot of the stage version, the film version is good enough to be memorable and keep you interested. Songs generally fit the story, and the idea of a girl searching for her true father is not only a good one, but also very relevant in an age of teenage pregnancies. The plot is also full of cheeky fun: younger ...

...to the cinema to see Mamma Mia'. So, last Tuesday afternoon, a girl friend and I trotted off to the matinee performance at a local Cineworld. Did Mamma Mia live up to expectations then?, I hear you ask. The answer is a resounding YES, and then some. MAMMA MIA. This film is based on a very successful stage production. Both the film and the theatre version are musicals, the music being on the whole well known Abba songs. There were a few songs that ...
...holiday is not possible but Mamma Mia' offered a welcome trip to Greece, even if only for a brief time. I could almost smell those lovely island scents and the bougainvillea looked near enough to touch. However by nosing in an old diary of her mother's ...

...seen the west-end production of Mamma mia!, I have always wanted to see it but never had the money to. So I jumped at the chance to see it in the cinema when I heard it was out! To summarise this whole film in one word, it has to be 'fun'! It is a 'feel-good' film with great songs to sing along to, and a cast with a lot of well-known actors just being a few of these. The movie is set on one of Greek's many beautiful islands, and begins with young ...
