...film. ===What is Mamma Mia?=== A film adaptation on the west end musical based on the songs of the pop group ABBA. The film follows Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) as she plans to get married to Sky (Dominic Cooper) and her doting mother Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep). However there's one thing missing from her life, her father. She reads her mother's diary and finds out she has three possible fathers: Sam (Peirce Brosnon), who was the love of her ... ...Meryl Streep singing Mamma Mia was great and could have been so much better if the camera work wasn't so dodgy. She's got an amazing voice. Dancing Queen preformed by every woman on the island was a great uplifiting moment. SOS is a good performance just because it drowns out Peirce's Brosnon's voice a lot. The Winner Takes It All preformed by Meryl Streep is a fantastic piece in the movie. She puts all of the emotion in she can. Brilliant. ===My ...

...and one of these was Mamma Mia. I had wanted to see it at the cinema but never got around to it, so I got it for myself for a treat with an Amazon voucher when it first came out. I never managed to see it, so was determined to do so at Christmas! Well, I've been so tired every evening that I've been in bed too early to watch a film, but tonight I put it on at 8pm as I really wanted to see the bloomin' thing at last! And was it worth the wait?
Mamma ... ...the film, from title song Mamma Mia, to Dancing Queen, to lesser known Honey, Honey and Slipping Through my Fingers which was an amazing emotional performance from Meryl Streep...I was welling up throughout that song! It modernises the classic hits but keeps the feeling of nostalgia, and you just cannot stop yourself singing along because its so catchy! The cast all have great voices and do all of the songs justice, none more so than the wonderful ...

Advantages: Some funny parts, lots of Abba hits Disadvantages: Young actors/actresses were poor
Mamma Mia was a film that had won rave reviews on here when I went to watch it, I've never really been one for musicals as I tend to find them cheesy and bad taste. Mamma Mia was set in a great location amongst Greek islands with emerald seas, rugged cliffs and old run down farmhouses.
At the beginning, I thought "god this is awful" as Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) and her equally nauseating friends Ali (Ashley Lilley) and Lisa (Rachel McDowall) burst ... ...by "Honey, Honey". My thoughts on this trio remained the same throughout the film - annoying yanks. Then Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) turned up as a pair of indulging biddies, the archetypal hag with a handbag - whilst initially unbelievably cringeworthy, I did find myself warming to at least Rosie over time and they improved as time went on.
The most amusing introduction part was undoubtedly meeting the 3 blokes -Sam Carmichael, ...

Advantages: Such fun all over Disadvantages: Not sure about some of the casting
...plotline, but weirdly, it works. Mamma Mia is one such film, with its all star cast and glitzy dance routines and a soundtrack to make any 70s and 80s child grin, whether they like Abba or not.
Mamma Mia as a stage production seemes to baffle me. I had never seen it, and wondered how they could make a musical full of Abba songs without it having anything to do with Abba's lives at all. Now I have seen the film, I understand - it is a story created ... ...wrong - could they?
Mamma Mia tells the story of Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried), who is due to get married to Sky (Dominic Cooper) but doesn't want to do so without her dad being there. The one slight problem is that she doesn't know who he is. Sneakily looking in her mum Donna's diary, she goes back to before she was born and works out it must be one of three men: Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgard), Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan) or Harry Bright ...

Advantages: Really funny, slapstick, harmless fun Disadvantages: Dragged a bit, not great singing
Stars - Meryl Streep Pierce Brosnan Colin Firth
Good points - Harmless cheerful fun
Bad points - Far too much ABBA for me! My ears are ringing
I was a bit weary of this film but both my mother and my aunt were extremely excited about this film so I thought I would go along with them to see what the fuss was about. I have to admit this film was really funny, if not a bit ridiculous and I did enjoy it. However Im in my 20s so missed the whole Abba ... ...a bit much and was slightly relieved when it was over. Julie Walters is the best thing about this whole film though, she is fantastic.
The singing wasnt up to scratch to me. None of these people would have made it on the west end. HOWEVER I think those who remember Abba from the first time round will love this. ...
