Advantages: Will still be enjoyable in 10 years time Disadvantages: Minimal extra features
The story follows on from Tolkein's childrens tale, The Hobbit, and it is all about a brave band of Hobbits (half-lings), a couple of men, an elf a dwarf and a wizard who set out to destroy a magical ring that belongs to a great evil (Sauron).
Not surprisingly, because the ring is magical the evil wants it back and sends forth army after army, and attracts many would be kings to its power in order for them to do its evil deeds and to try to retrieve ... ...film about 30 times on video prior to getting the DVD as a gift, so the plot and general feel of the film I already knew.
The quality of this film will undoubtedly stand the test of time, as animation tends to age better than 'proper' films, and still compares favourably with the new version. Unlike the new version, it does stick fairly regimentedly to the book, so if you own the new version, you will notice some subtle differences between the two. ...

==============================
The Lord of the rings is a classic timeless epic split into three books the first being the fellowship of the rings. Everyone should know the story by now, but just in case you don't ......

Advantages: Entertaining Disadvantages: Seen the plot before
I watched the first of the trilogy this week on DVD.
I havn't read the book so I didn't and don't know what to expect next.
The film was certainly entertaining but the plot I've seen before in many guises starting long ago in greek mythology with such films as Jason and the Argonauts, Ulysses etc. More recently it reminded me of Star Wars particularly as Stephen Lee was a baddy in both who had been turned from good to the dark side in both films. ... ...I'm not so I won't.
The early part of the film is a little slow going as most are but the second half is non stop action and the journey through the caves reminded me of many a computer labyrinth game and possibly the best part of this first part.
I wasn't overimpressed with the lead actor but I thought the rest of the actors where very good.
On the whole I'd give it 8 out of 10 for entertainment value, possibly just a little too long.
I certainly ...

Advantages: Nice one for after the pub Disadvantages: No hoper against the current version
I first saw this film in 1978 when I was extremely young!! (not). At the time I thought it was brilliant but having just seen Peter Jacksons vision of Middle Earth, this version shows its age!
I wish that he had made the second part of the film, as it should be made clear to people that this film only covers half of the complete story, which is not evident from the packaging. Having said that this version is entertaining in its own right, and is ...
