...Madonna debuted with the wonderful Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, eventually following up with the equally special Snatch. There wasn’t much progression with Snatch, and in many ways it was just Lock Stock Episode 2 with many of the original characters reappearing only with the names altered. However, it didn’t need to move onto pastures new because Lock Stock Episode 1 was so bloody good that it could easily spawn a heir without any fear of ... ...fat or unnecessary padding – Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is just perfect in every respect, lean and beautiful and dripping with lust, a truly excellent creation.
Some of the cussing and violent scenes will lead the more staid members of our society to quail at the thought of this film, but really that’s all part of the fun, ain’t it, kids? ...

Whilst I was still at school this film came out and over the course of a couple of French lessons in my final year we watched this and I was almost instantly drawn to it. Obviously I was too young to have gone to the cinema to see it but it had been bought for me as a present when it did finally come out. Of course in case your not aware I'm talking about Guy Richie's debut film Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels.
Of course everyone wants to make ... ...these lads are no different. First up you got Bacon (Jason Statham) who sells stolen goods on street corners. Then you got Tom (Jason Flemyng) who is involved in everything he possibly can be. Eddie (Nick Moran) is an expert card player who gets involved in odd little bits with the other 2. And finally Soap (Dexter Fletcher), a chef by trade and called Soap as he tries to avoid the dodgy dealings of the other 3.
However the lads have hit an idea ...

Some movies are just pure entertainment….
There are some movies made, which have nothing but pure entertainment and some passing some hidden message. Movies, like Traffic, Pulp Fiction, snatch and now Lock Stock & two smoking Barrels are different breed of movie, all about guns, money and gangsters. Mostly, these kinds of movie are only for adult viewing, because there is lot of blood shed and use of abusive language.
Lock Stock & Two smoking ... ...are very crisp; yeah definitely the pace of the movie will include lot of surprising characters springing up in the middle of the movie and violence. Behind the scene…. Movie, directed by music video director, Guy Ritchie, is made on a very low budget, released in UK with tremendous success. This movie, with the typical British accent (I just love this accent) is really fun to watch. Though initially it will look like documentary but the background ...

...poor litter we discover the Lock, Stock... television series. So does it rank alongside the cream, or sink to the bottom of this already over-populated pile? Surprisingly, the series remains remarkably faithful to its source: witness the overly stylised camera-work and the characters with ridiculous monikers (pick of the bunch here being a heavy named Mars Bar for some unexplained reason), as well as the racial stereotyping, prominent homophobia ... ...in seven re-runs of the Lock, Stock movie, and yet this series still provides a certain charm. As many critics pointed out at the time, the reason for the feature film's success was probably down to the fact that it resembled a modern day Ealing comedy, albeit one with an 18 certificate. Strip down, say, The Ladykillers or The Lavender Hill Mob and you’re left with capers gone wrong and comic mishaps, exactly the same basic elements that form Guy ...

I have seen this film many years ago now but never really followed what was going on as it did not appeal to me. For some reason hubby decided that he wanted to re watch it so out came the DVD and I was expecting another night of boredom but I can say that after sitting and watching it properly I did actually manage to follow the story and did quite enjoy it. .

Advantages: direction, story, main actors, camera, soundtrack Disadvantages: plays to stereotype, subtitles maybe needed, too short
Lock Stock is a gem of a movie about 4 young Cockney rogues, but generally nice guys, who decide to play their hands at the poker table with £100,000 of their savings.
Only problem is that even though they are quite streetwise they're clearly out of their depth when playing against Hatchet Harry, the local heavy. As a consequence they end up owing him half a million by next week otherwise its goodbye fingers & toes!
The movie is superbly directed ... ...by Tarantino, Richie turns on the style with interesting camera angles, lighting, a cool soundtrack and a very witty script.
The characterisation is full & rounded, although does sometimes vear towards the stereotypical, especially with the portrayal of the real bad guys - Hatchet & Co.
But the other four guys you really do warm too; they're young, attractive, naive but they work off each other and make the film more believable & interesting.

Advantages: Dialogue; listen and you'll see Disadvantages: The Scouser with the Afro
...And so we have Lock, Stock, a film that follows the lives of four gambling misfits, lives shortened if their debt to a recent Bragg ('a simple form of poker', we are told) victor, is not repaid sharpish. Then, there's a couple of half-brained scousers, a group of dope-growing toffs, an ex-footballer debt-collector and an afro-haired lunatic thrown into the mix and the result is just over two hours of comic, crime-capering genius.
The dialogue is ... ...one-liners and great set-pieces that'll have you wondering how on earth a true brit could ever come up with them. I would some up the storyline for you eager beavers, but its just so complex that it'd take me an age to tell you the whole list of characters.
The only down side is that the swearing can seem a little much at times, bordering but not quite crossing into the realms of gratuitousness. Also, although most of the performances are excellent, ...

...new classic and it's name LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS. Now this isn't just a film, it is a britsh film that stands out above the rest, even four weddings and a funeral doesn't compare (I love that film but Andie MacDowell is crap in it). The next group is Harry and the bishop (I think it's that but it might be something else to do with the church), Harry wants ...

I enjoyed this film and I think it would be unfair to blame it too much for the flogging of the Sarf London Gangsta theme that followed (though it must bear some of the blame for the truly awful TV series as well as Snatch).
The plot is satisfyingly convoluted and I won't ruin your enjoyment by recounting it here. Instead I'll pull out the strengths and weaknesses of the film as follows
Script
The opening is great - the dialogue mock Shakesperian ... ...checking out this play if you enjoyed this film). This level of repartee was not sustained throughout the film, perhaps becuase the twists of the plot meant that the action neede to be conveyed at a faster pace than the dialogue would allow.
Nods to
Obviously Michael Caine, as the quintessential Cockney, but more recently to The Long Good Friday, Resevoir Dogs and Trainspotting. Big big nod to The Hard Case, Ritchie's first film - a short - that ...

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
This is the first offering of the now celebrated Guy Ritchie, (of knocking off Madonna fame), and tells the story of four London likely lads who in an attempt to make a bit of cash quick, get themselves involved with some rather unsavoury characters.
Soap, Bacon, Fat man & Nick, all cough up £25, 000 grand a piece for Nick to enter into a card game run by local villain Hatchet Harry, who we find out in the directors ... ...with Nick’s dad JD (Sting), over a card game held years ago. Hatchet Harry, along with his trusted aid and all round nasty geezer Barry the Baptist (you can just imagine how he got his name!) decide to stitch up Nick during the game, and not only take the four lads money but also JD’s beloved bar as retribution for the disagreement. Barry kindly informs Nick that he has a short time to pay up the £250,000 that they owe, or his days of ...

This has got to be one of my favourite films of all time. This is definitely the British film to see, and the gangster movie which spawned a heap of other not so good films from other British film makers in the same genre. However, this has to be the original and BEST, so don't settle for any less by buying something like 'Circus'.
It is essentially a crime caper comedy, and i certainly found this to be hilarious. The witty (almost lyrical) script, ... ...as to get maximum effect, and will leave you wanting to quote them for years to come. It is clear that Guy Ritchie (the director) has done some research by watching a little Martin Scorsese, and the introduction of the characters (there's a freeze frame followed by a narrators introduction) is similar to that of 'GoodFellas'. This is not a bad place to get inspiration from, and i think that this film definitely rivals, and may even surpass 'GoodFellas' ...

Set in London's East End, it's the tale of four friends' need to raise half a million quid in order to settle a gambling debt. It's a heist movie at heart - but to describe it in such simple terms would be a massive injustice. So I won't. It's a sleek visual treat - stylish, witty and gritty, ... ...first feature employs so many slick editing tricks that his music promotions past is immediately evident; yet rather than irritating it has the opposite effect.
