Not just a children's story

Advantages: Engaging story, Jim Carey
Disadvantages: Drags a bit towards the end

...I have never read the Lemony Snicket books and can therefore not compare the book with the film. In fact, I would probably never have watched this film if it weren't amongst a collection of DVDs I borrowed from my friend's teenage son. I also knew that Jim Carey starred in the film; what I wasn't expecting was that he would give a really good performance. As Count Olaf, there was none of the usual face-pulling - I suspect that his make-up may have ...
...character. Finally, Jude Law plays Lemony Snicket, who occasionally narrates the story of the Baudelaire orphans. We don't see his face until right at the end; I must admit I didn't realise it was him until then. He has a good reading voice when he's not putting on a silly accent. The pacing of the story is excellent until right towards the end when I thought it began to drag a little. In the first two thirds of the film at least, there is always ...

Weird, yet Wonderful!

Advantages: Great actors, good story
Disadvantages: May be too long for younger children

Lemony Snicket has given us a wonderful and magical film with this one. The film also has many stars in which just add to the enjoyment and viewing. The film starts with Lemony Snicket, played by Jude Law, telling us about a story he is about to tell and how if we like films with happy endings then we are watching the wrong film. He then introduces us to the Baudelaire children, Violet, the eldest who is an inventor, Klaus the middle son who loves ...

...Law, as the voice of Lemony Snicket the fictional author of this story, this is enjoyable in many ways. The children actors, particularly Emily Browning - who plays Violet, do a very good job. Billy Connolly and Meryl Streep play kind Monty and obsessive Josephine respectively and Timothy Spall is Mr Poe - all play their parts very well. Uncle Monty is a kind man, who breeds and keeps reptiles in his large country house. One of which is a harmless ...

Advantages: Great special effects, fantastic storyline,
Disadvantages: A bit sad in places

...first three books written by Lemony Snicket. These are the bad beggining, the reptile room and the wide window. I found the books good but the film even better. The film tells the story about three orphans. Violet is the eldest, Klaus the middle one and Sunny the youngest. A terrible fire destroys the children's home and kills their parents. Their parents had a fortune and their house was like a mansion. After their parents deaths the children go ...

If you haven't seen this film yet watch it, you will not be disappointed especially if you are a fan of Carey. ...

really not an unfortunate film!

Advantages: an thoroughly enjoyable film that makes you smile!
Disadvantages: the set isn't a real place!

This film is thoroughly enjoyable, perfect for watching anytime of the day & with anyone, I think that everyone will be able to find something that will make them smile & something to enjoy! I have read that this film is based on books, at the risk of sounding illiterate, I have never read any of the books, or heard of them (until this film), so unfortunately I can not compare as others have done in their reviews. The film tells the unfortunate ...

not your typical story suitable for all ages

Advantages: Great for all ages
Disadvantages: none I can think of

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events has got to be one of the most interesting childrens films I ever seen. Can't say that it is based on anything similar at all, or not to my knowledge and I love that about a film, especially when you have kids who like to replay the same films over and over again. It is about three special children Klaus who loves to read, Violet who loves to invent things and Sunny a toddler who loves to bite things, ...

The film is about their adventures with their three eccentric guardians Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly ) and Aunt Josephine The first guardian Count Olaf, a villainous one starred by Jim Carrey supported by his acting troup, tries by any means to get his hands on the childrens fortune. Jim Carrey as the villainous guardian acting is brilliant, scary, ...

...particularly cute baby for these roles!!!). The filmography is also particularly effective. Set mostly on a grey back set, the mood throughout is gloomy and brooding, accentuated by a particularly impressive slightly eerie soundtrack. The major weakness in the film, in my opinion, was the portrayal of Count Olaf. For the most part, I am a fan of Jim Carrey. I like his films, I find them easy to watch and entertaining and in my mind, he proved himself ...

Theres no Lemons in this Snicket

Advantages: Great movie, funny, dramatic, interesting
Disadvantages: not in the same order as the great books.

I haven't fully explored the DVD - I was more interested in watching the film after reading all thirteen books!! I loved the books but watching the film I could see how much they had cut out of the story. It would have been good if they did a film for each book, like the Harry Potter Series, as then the books wouldn't be merged into any old order - as they have done. As they only used the first three books in this series, I hope there will be a equel ...

The film is funny, it's dramatic and it's a great visual treat with Tim Burton - esquire wild images throughout. This is a superb job of combining great visuals, special effects and an entertaining story. The two kids, played by Emily Browning and Liam Aiken, should get top billing since they are in every scene while Jim ...

Really Good!!!

Advantages: Smart
Disadvantages: None

I had read the books before going to see this film so had a small idea on how the film would appear on the big screen. I was so shocked to find that for once a film is made that is on par with the books!! The 3 Baudelaire children are orphaned when their family home catches fire and kills their parents. They are sent to live with their relative count olaf who treats the children badly making them do awful chores just so he can adopt them and steal ...

The relationship between the children - Violet, Klaus and Sunny is inspiring and the story is full of many twists in the tale. Jim Carrey as count olaf is hilarious and was definately the perfect match for the character. I agree that not everybody will enjoy this type of film but i thought it ...

Not unfortunate enough for me

Advantages: Very funny baby & Tim Spall
Disadvantages: Too vague, not well enough explained in places

...for my liking. Lemony Snicket is based on a series of books and it doesn't quite translate well enough to the big screen trying to use too many ideas without giving enough initial explanation as to who is who and why things are happening at all. I'm marking the film down for various reasons. The child actors are brilliant, even if the Violet character is a bit annoying by being a little bit too brainy for her own good at times. The baby is hilarious, ...

A Series of Unfortunate, clevery done Events!

Advantages: Meryl Streep! Need I say more?
Disadvantages: Subtitles in some places. Not a disadvantage for me, however.

I had never read any of the 'A Series of Unfortunate' events books before I had watched this film, and I positively adored this film. Jim Carrey was excellent as the evil Count Olaf, yet brought humour to the role which made Count Olaf even more conniving. Infact, the movie had a good range of stars in roles. One of my favourite casting choices was Meryl Streep as Aunt Josephine. She was simply fantastic in the role and, even if you weren't enjoying ...
...One thing which I see that could possibly throw people off in the movie, is when the character of Sunny Baudelaire speaks, it has subtitles appear for what she is saying, due to the fact she's a baby and can't speak in proper english yet. However, I enjoyed that aspect because it added humour when no one could understand what she was saying but her siblings. The only reason I mention it is because people I know want to watch movies because there's ...

Another good movie

Advantages: Good family movie + jim carrey
Disadvantages: nothing really...

Lemony Snicket is the narrator in Daniel Handler's hugely popular series of Snicket books. Lemony tells the story of Sunny, Klaus, and Violet, three orphans who are taken in by Count Olaf, a distant family relative trying to scam the kids out of an inheritance. First thing: Family movie which is not boring!!!!!! really good actor game, jim carrey as Count Olaf and... it's not so funny like in other movies. Quite interesting. Here you can see that ...

There is no so many special efect like we get used to it in movies like as example matrix, but watching this movie we care about characters ; we really wanna know what happends next! Memorable movie not from those "s**t quality; nothing telling us". And you can sit with your child , wife get some chips drinks and enjoy family event. Cheers. ...
