Forest Whitaker delivers an Oscar-winning, ferociously commanding performance as bloodthirsty Ugandan president Idi Amin in Kevin MacDonald’s THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Adapted...
more...from the novel by Giles Foden, the film recounts Amin’s horrific reign through the eyes of a fictional character, Nick Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young doctor from Scotland who travels to Uganda hoping to do some good. Nick is more sanguine about new president Amin than his counterpart Sarah Merrit (Gillian Armstrong) is, whose experience causes her to be sceptical of Amin’s bombastic declarations. After an automobile accident, Nick is called in to treat the president’s wounds. His authoritative behaviour impresses Amin, who charms Nick into becoming his personal physician. Nick embraces his newfound life of luxury, but he is unable to grasp the reality of the situation. When he does finally realise the atrocities Amin is inflicting upon his people (and is also capable of inflicting on Nick), the terrified doctor tries to make a frantic escape before it's too late. MacDonald, director of the acclaimed documentaries ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER and TOUCHING THE VOID, makes a startlingly assured transition into fictional filmmaking with THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Working with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (THE CELEBRATION) and editor Justine Wright, MacDonald brings 1970s Uganda to pulsating life, perfectly recreating that tumultuous era. But ultimately the film belongs to Whitaker: as he shifts from charming to maniacal in the space of a short, unexpected breath, he infuses Amin with startling humanity.

Amin's White Monkey
Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by Andy.mack

Advantages: An excellent story, very eye opening. The performance by Whitaker
Disadvantages: Not going to have mass appeal

Over the last month or so I seem to have been catching up with a number of films that I’d actually been quite keen to see when they were in the cinema. The latest one on my list was The Last King Of Scotland, a film I had heard a lot of good things about. So I sat down last night to finally catch up with the film and see what all the fuss was about. It’s based on the true story of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin and the way he ruled Uganda during a certain ... Read review

Uganda or Scotland?
Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by shanediablo

Advantages: Great performances, Tense, Compelling viewing
Disadvantages: Factually inaccurate

One of the most misleading film/book titles ever in my opinion! So what is the film about? Is it any good? ------------------------------------------------------- This is the tale of how the films protagonist Dr Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) is taken under the wing of Ugandan president, Idi Amin (Forrest Whitaker). Amin just so happens to be a brutal dictator with a bit of a problem with trusting people. Garrigan had just finished university ... Read review

Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by scotlandizdabest

Advantages: Powerful, Passionate movie with an outstanding cast
Disadvantages: Does contain gore and distressing scenes

...Of Scotland is based on the real life of the presidency of Idi Amin. This is a semi-fictional story based in Uganda, with big connections with Scotland. **When Was It Released** Released in January 2007 and released on DVD on 14th March. So it hasn't been out for very long. It is one of the most successful movies of 2007. **Charactors/Actors** James MacAvoy (Becoming Jane, Narnia) - Dr. Nicholas Garrigan- The main charactor behind the Last ... Read review

Watch it just for Whitaker's performace
Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by sherbertwhizzes

Advantages: powerful fast paced story, spellbinding.
Disadvantages: needs to make clear that this is part fact, part fiction

...amazing performance as Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator who rose to power in the 1970s. James McAvoy plays Nicholas Garrigan, a Scottish doctor who goes to Uganda and becomes Amin's personal doctor. The film uses the doctor to show what kind of man/dictator Amin is, plus all the lavish lifestyle he has become used to, is simply not worth it due to the bloodshed and corruption around him Forest Whitaker plays this larger than life character with such ... African dictator meets fictional doctor
Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by snoozle

Advantages: A good thriller with its roots in history, fantastic performance by Forest Whitaker
Disadvantages: Difficult to feel empathy with the "hero", some violent scenes

I missed this film at the cinema so was keen to see it once it made it onto DVD. Although the main character is real, and some of the other characters too, the story itself is entirely fictional, as is the doctor played by James McAvoy. The performance by Forest Whitaker has been widely praised, and for good reason. His portrayal of Amin, brings together the charm and menace of the man. It would be a role that would be very easy to go over the ... Read review

Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by alexloukakis

Advantages: Acting, powerful images and plot
Disadvantages: Fictional characters added to movie

...mass murder and corruptive dictatorship. The Last King of Scotland is one of the best movies of 2007. Based on a true story during the Ugandan crisis in the 70's, the extremely mesmerising Dictator Idi Amin, managed to take power and become president of the Ugandan state. Dr Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), plays the role of a Scottish medical graduate, who travels to Uganda after his studies, in order to help out with the crisis. The president ... Read review

Review of The Last King Of Scotland DVD by raghed2t

Advantages: informative
Disadvantages: violent scenes

this is one of the films that you can not see and forget, whitaker has done such an outstanding performace as Idi Amine that make your hair stands if you sees him for real. It is an insight into the phscicology and invironment that creats such bloodthirsty beasts a case which could apply to big proportion of third world countries rulers, it is a film about the missuse of power about a world where there is no place for peace love or human emotions, ... Advantages: Truly gripping
Disadvantages: Based on a fictional character

...and popular politician who at the blink of an eye becomes a psychotic and bloodthirsty murderer who will defy anyone who tries to stand in his way. James McAvoy is equally as impressive as Amins personal doctor whose character is fictional yet very believable. This movie was released when a lot about life in Africa came out (Hotel Rwanda, The Constant Gardener) and is by far the best and most gripping with two superb performances from its leading ... ...suprising; and totally not expectign the outcome. I loved it. The oscar winnign performance by Forest Whittaker was truley remarkable, deserving every accolade it recieved. Kerry washington also delivered an outstanding performance, although small her pressence was not forgeotting and left a considerbale impact. With me not being the greatest fan of James Mcavoy ( totally overrated) i dismissed the film on that basis alone; having watched it i have ... Read review
