Advantages: Strangely compelling at times, original Disadvantages: Doesn't quite gel together
...forward to the release of Lady in the Water in 2006, hoping that it would herald a return to form for the director. Ultimately, many were disappointed by what appears to be a fairy tale for adults, with a little bit of supernatural happenings thrown in for good measure. Having read so many negative reviews, I did not have high expectations for this film; perhaps for that reason, I didn't think it was as bad as many had made out. One thing is clear ... ...of people will either love or hate. Paul Giamatti plays Cleveland Heep and is excellent in the role. Heep is a shy, retiring man with a painful stutter; he desperately wants people to like him and be happy with the job that he does, and so is frequently disappointed when he doesn't meet their expectations. I immediately felt sympathy for him and thought that Giamatti was completely convincing in the role. There is a depth to the character that is ...

...Sense.
I would place Lady In The Water somewhere in the middle. If anything, it edges closer to The Village, but only because Bryce Dallas Howard is once again a powerful character in the film. She plays Story, the Lady of the title, while the water in the title is that of an appartment block swimming pool. Paul Giamatti plays Cleveland, the super of the building who is saved by Story one night after he bumps his head on the side of the pool. As ... ...huge twist at the end. Lady In The Water does have a couple of surprises up its sleeve, but nothing major that would shock as in some of his other films.
The DVD is currently available to buy from amazon.co.uk for a reasonably low price at the moment, but it's not the sort of film I would bother getting on DVD. It passes the time and has flashes of brilliance, but the disappointing later parts of the film kind of spoil it in a way. ...

The story of lady in the water is one of building manager Cleveland Heep who rescues a mysterious young woman from danger to discover she is actually a narf (a character from a bedtime story) who is trying to make the journey from our world back to hers. Slowly but surely Heep and his fellow tenants begin to realise they too are characters in this story. As Heep falls deeper and deeper in love with the woman he has rescued ... ...keep her safe from the terrifying creatures in this fable. The creatures however are determined she wont return home and Heep begins to realise he has his work cut out and is unsure of whom he can rely on.

Whilst a lot of the acting in the movie was of high standard and the story an imaginative one, much of the story and script is very weak. It seems to me like the idea was always there but they were never sure ...

Advantages: Entertaining, cleverly written. Disadvantages: Lengthy bits now and again.
...the abilities needed for the lady in the water to complete her mission, and these humans have been reunited within one apartment complex (makes life easier I suppose)... anyways, along the way, evil creatures are out to destroy the lady in the lake, and it's up to the humans (the chosen ones) to save her from the evil ones.
Again, you're thinking... boring... you're even yawning (I know you are)... but wait... this is a Shyamalan movie... (Sixth ... ...so cleverly written, it's incredible. Shyamalan has purposely set the mood, he's even pushed you (kicking and screaming) down the path that leads to the movie's inevitable conclusion... there are no secrets, you know what's going to happen... the path is almost at its end, and then, low and behold, Shyamalan erects a brick wall and shoves you smack into it! Still dizzy from the impact, you realize that it isn't the plot that's important... it's the ...

Advantages: The production of this film is beautifully done, with real attention to detail. Disadvantages: There is nothing i could say negatively about this film.
This is a truly enjoyable and magical film from the extremely unusual and intriguing story line to the fresh way in which the film has been shot. Both aspects are due to the innovative director M. Night Shyamalan (The Village and Sixth Sense).
This film shows that with enough belief anything can be possible, and in what feels like a mundane existence for Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti, SIDEWAYS) as an American apartment caretaker, even when life ... ...creature named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard, THE VILLAGE) turns Heep's life complete upside down and requires him to make a leap of faith.
This is a truly enjoyable experience from start to end. The pace very much eco's the way in which the story line unfolds and you feel very much as though you are going through the different twists and turns with the characters, who are acted superbly by the brilliant cast of actors.
