This is a superb gangster film, with Christopher Walken outstanding in that understated, yet manic way that characterises so many of the roles he plays. So much of his menace is carried in a furtive glance from his beady eyes, or a fleeting half-smile, that he does not need to say much to loom dark and threatening on the screen. Walken plays Frank White, a New York gang lord just released from the penitentiary and intent on recovering the turf that ... ...Chinese warlords during his incarceration. Advantages: fantastic performance from Keitel Disadvantages: avoid if you dislike the sleazy side of life
Harvey Keitel plays a corrupt and perverted cop who gets off on masturbating in front of teenage girls he’s pulled over and shooting up heroin. There isn’t a plot of such, the film just follows along as Keitel’s character sinks deeper and deeper into depravity and debt to a loan shark. There are themes of corruption and redemption, with reoccuring Catholic imagery. It’s pretty obvious from the start that this is a doomed character but the film is ...
