Quentin Tarantino returns to the director's chair with KILL BILL after a six-year hiatus. The movie proves once again that he is a hyperactive visionary and the master of cinematic...
more...coolness. Split into two volumes by Miramax in order to ensure that Tarantino's vision would not be compromised (and presumably to sell more tickets), KILL BILL: VOLUME 1 tells the first half of the sprawling story, which is quite simple at first glance. A female assassin, referred to as "The Bride" (Uma Thurman), is attacked on her wedding day. Dead are her soon-to-be husband and unborn child. However, she doesn't die. Four years later, she wakes up from a coma looking for revenge. Although her ultimate target is her former boss, Bill (David Carradine), it's quite clear that The Bride is saving the best for last. And before she can track him down, she must methodically take out the minions who ruined her life. VOLUME 1's targets include Vernita Green/Copperhead (Vivica A. Fox), Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus), and the heartless O-Ren Ishii/Cottonmouth (Lucy Liu). Using a blessed sword handmade by Hattori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba), The Bride begins her relentless assault.
Turning up the style and energy levels that he kept under a threshold with 1997's JACKIE BROWN, Tarantino's obvious glee and reverence for the underground kung fu action pictures of the '70s, and Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns, makes for a stunning visual spectacle. Employing split screens, slow-motion, an anime sequence, and his trademark ultra-hip musical selections, Tarantino's film dares viewers to be unimpressed.

Ahh, revenge, you'll be needing a Hanzo with that.
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by Ayesha-

Advantages: Good acting, 70's style if you like it
Disadvantages: Unlikely story, 70's style if you hate it

...trip of revenge, ready to kill each perpetrator one by one, leading up to the top dog, Bill. How will she get on? Watch Kill Bill to find out! As I say, lots of people were talking about this film at the time, and even now people seem to be very opinionated about it, not necessarily in a good way. A lot of people felt that there was just too much blood and that the fight scenes dragged on too much. However, The Bride narrates her own story, ... Read review

Diamond review   Kill Bill Will Thrill
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by LostWitness

Advantages: Bloody, violent, action-fest
Disadvantages: Limited plot, part 1 of 2 films

...Quite simply, she intends to Kill Bill. I’m not a fan of Quentin Tarantino films. For me, Pulp Fiction was grossly over-rated and Reservoir Dogs bored me senseless. You can imagine my surprise, therefore, when his 4th film, Kill Bill, entertained me more than any film I can recall in the last twelve months and beyond. I don’t think that Kill Bill could purport to be a masterpiece, but it does come pretty damn close and I have to say ... Read review

Here Comes The Bride
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by Mauri

Advantages: Superb martial arts action thriller
Disadvantages: You need to like violent action films to enjoy this

...new and hopefully tasty dishes. Kill Bill Vol. 1 is the first instalment of an attempt by king of cool director Quentin Tarantino to create ‘Fusion’ Cinema and he has been very liberal with his ingredients. So is this a recipe for disaster or a gourmand’s dream? One major criticism of this film, which I have heard again and again, is that it is self indulgent and pretentious. I came to watching this as a huge Tarantino fan but with many reservations ... Read review

Movie don't get more fun than this..
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by moxon123

Advantages: Thurman is amazing, Tarantino's direction is flawless and the fight choreography is stunning.
Disadvantages: Err... well its only half a film.

...this. I've just been watching KILL BILL VOLUME 1 again you see (which would make it about the 100th time since my first cinema viewing) and I'm still quite excited. After the hype has died down, going back to the film is almost like seeing it with fresh eyes, no longer are there expectations, just perceptions and in a strange way they still bring with them surprise. If I loved the film the first time, then I did so even more the second, by the time ... Read review

...great martial arts skills and kill remorselessly. The woman (we never get to hear her name and it is edited when spoke by other characters in the film ?) appears to have been shot at her wedding whilst heavily pregnant after being attacked by her four colleagues BUT amazingly she survives and is given a metal plate in her head at a hospital. Kill Bill. Kill Ben. Kill Everybody!
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by ShoppingGirl

Advantages: That yellow jumpsuit and a superb soundtrack
Disadvantages: Blood, death, mindless violence, spurting arteries and flying limbs.

...movie of the year – Kill Bill Volume 1. Kill Bill is of course the fourth film to be written and directed by cinema’s one true maverick, Quentin Tarantino. I list Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown in my top ten films of all time, and although the violent aspects of the trailers had worried me, I was looking forward to enjoying those touches that only Tarantino has the balls to pull off. The opening moments didn’t disappoint. Nancy Sinatra singing ... Read review

Advantages: The style, the music, the actors
Disadvantages: The story, some of the acting

...She is obviously here to kill The Bride until she receives a phone call from Bill. Four years later. The Bride wakes up, shocked, horrified and confused, without her baby. When she hears someone coming she lies back down, a male nurse walks in with a 'friend', "…it's $75 a f**k my friend, so you getting your freak on or what?" Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by willgould

Advantages: Fantastic gore drenched classic for fans of Samurai/Yakuza/Ganster/Kung Fu and Hong Kong Films.
Disadvantages: Strictly for fans of Tarantino and Martial Arts films only. The rest of you just won't get it.

...Tarantino’s ultimate exploitation homage flick Kill Bill was finally released on October 17th. For those of you who, like me have been ready for this film since Uma Thurman and Tarantino dreamed it up way back in 1994, the most important question ‘Is it any bloody good?’ is finally answered. Yes. It is good, with emphasis on the word bloody. Described by one critic as the most violent film ever delivered to a Hollywood studio, Kill Bill ensures that ... Read review

Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by ashtonluke

Advantages: Great scenes, Tarantino
Disadvantages: Violence will put people off

I bought Kill Bill Volume one on DVD the other day. I saw it at the cinema when it was out but after having watched it again, I decided that I must review it! I have to first of all say that I love Quentin Tarantino’s movies (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown) so I will try to be as impartial as possible in my review! The film was made as one whole project but after production they decided to split it into two volumes. I think I must ... Read review

Where's the thrill, Bill?
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by TheDuke

Advantages: Uma Thurman and Sonny Chiba.
Disadvantages: Overlong, Doesn't maintain interest, some scenes are too long.

...of Uma Thurman, and in Kill Bill she doesn't let herself down. Aided by Tarantino's trademark snappy dialogue, she plays the part of The Bride with a snappiness I've not previously seen in her work. The rest of the cast do their jobs, but it's hard to give any additional praise or criticism as most of them don't appear for very long. Lucy Liu and Julie Dreyfus both offer good performances as the film's main bad "guy" and assistant respectively. ... Read review

Revenge is a dish best served cold
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by DarkMark

Advantages: Tarantino returns from a six year absense
Disadvantages: Violence may offend, not quite as good as Pulp Fiction

..."rip roaring rampage of revenge", Kill Bill. Quentin Tarintino, one of the most influencial film makers of the last decade has been keeping a low porfile after his crime drama 'Jackie Brown' was released back in 1997. After six years of intense writing (not only for this film but for others) Kill Bill comes along and makes a big impact with the newly reformed family friendly (cough> 12A <cough) orientated cinema in our country. The story is ... Read review

The movie Matrix Reloaded wishes it could be!
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by Plissken

Advantages: Exhilarating fight scenes, outstanding use of music...what else would you expect from QT?
Disadvantages: February is a long way away...

...to tell you how great Kill Bill is without telling you why 'Matrix Reloaded' is so shit. Let's face it - everyone knew we were going to be treated to something rather special after that trailer, which gave us tantalising snippets of action without giving anything away, combined with the ridiculously cool 'Battle without Honor or Humanity' track. It's rare that a movie turns out to be even better than I expected it to be, and this is one of those ... Read review

Who Do You Want To Kill?
Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by Great_reviewer07

Advantages: Excellently directed
Disadvantages: Slow at times, very brutal

...then vows that she will kill Bill… Kill Bill is a film that you’ll either love or you’ll hate simply because this movie is so extreme and outrageous. I better just say for the record that I’m by no means a fan of Quentin Tarantino’s work, I find most of his films to be too fragmented and outlandish as they’re either way too slow that they’ll send you to sleep or they move at such a frantic pace that it’s hard to keep up. Kill Bill showcases both ... Read review

Review of Kill Bill Vol.1 (DVD) by antsss

Advantages: Sidesteps the Hollywood cliches
Disadvantages: No need to split it into two films!!

...was about. --> THE BASICS Tarantino describes Kill Kill as a revenge movie, a movie utterly detached from reality, and "a movie that the characters in Pulp Fiction would go and see". It's definitely all those things and more. The movie opens with a sequence that nicely sets up the framework for the story to come. The Bride, played by Uma Thurman, is lying bloodstained on the floor when the faceless Bill puts the final bullet in her head. ... Read review
