Well onto the story. Benigni plays Dante, a school bus driver who is a simple soul. He ferries handicapped kids around in his yellow vehicle, making their journeys fun by singing to them. Early on in the film we realise Dante is a flop with women, he’s their ... ...it. Maria names him Johnny Stecchino – Toothpick Johnny.
Maria takes Dante to Palermo with her. There we are introduced to the real Johnny Stecchino, her husband the gangster, who just happens to be the very image of Dante. He’s living as a prisoner in his own home. He’s a supergrass and a villain and a man named Cozzamara is after him so he’s gone into hiding.
