The Names Bond - James Bond

Advantages: Sean Connery, Sean Connery, Sean Connery, etc
Disadvantages: Not a thing, well - maybe a wee bit dated.

...the most famous special agent, James Bond 007, to the silver screen nearly 40 years ago now, in May, 1963. I was just coming on twelve years old at the time of its release, and was already familiar with 007 through reading the books by his creator, the author Ian Fleming. This was the stuff that a schoolboy’s dreams were made of, and I was not disappointed by the depiction of Bond on the screen by the consummate and accomplished Scottish ...
...the one and only true James Bond. Who can ever forget the immortal line, “The names Bond, James Bond”, spoken in Connery’s distinctly Scottish brogue, and which to this day is a byword in the Bond films. ~ ~ The early Bond films had it all, and Dr. No, the very first of the series, was no exception. Exotic locations from all over the globe, (and remember that world-wide travel was not so commonplace then as it is today) lush film ...

40 years of O O Heaven

Advantages: complete escapism
Disadvantages: could offend the politically correct

...Bond … James Bond! Cue music. I make no apologies for boring anyone with the amount of trivia that this review contains; I am a Bond anorak as anyone who knows me will tell you. Ian Lancaster Fleming created Bond after retiring from British Naval Intelligence, where he achieved the rank of Commander (the same department Bond was recruited from and, strangely enough, the same rank). He retired to Jamaica where he built his house ‘Goldeneye’. ...
...Royale’ which was made into an unofficial movie in 1954 and starred Barry Nelson. When I use the term unofficial here, I refer to the fact that this film is not an Eon production along with the remake of 'Never Say Never' and is therefore not recognised as part of the franchise set up by Harry Saltzman and Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli. I hope that appeases the pedants among us. This was remade in 1967, when Bond was firmly established as a box office ...

and the word was BOND

Advantages: Sean Connery on fine form, a good story and of course, it's the first one ever!
Disadvantages: Well, it is a little bit slow at times

...Starring Sean Connery as James Bond. Co-stars Ursula Andress, Jack Lord, and Joseph Wiseman as Dr. No. And so the series begins and the world is introduced to the world of secret agent James Bond, 007. There is no conceivable way that those responsible for this film had any idea exactly what they were unleashing on the world at large, but it is possible to find elements in this film that had ‘smash hit’ written all over them. The plot ...
...as Dr No is murdered. James Bond is sent to investigate. He discovers a plot to interfere with US missile deployment, and the involvement of terrorist organisation SPECTRE. Sean Connery plays the role of James Bond, and to many people, Connery IS James Bond. His sophisticated charm and debonnaire attitude transfers from the pages of Ian Flemings novel to the big screen effortlessly, and Connery typifies the character here. Until Timothy Dalton’s ...

Not easy to get into.

Advantages: Wonderful acting and plot, even though it seems a bit shaky at times.
Disadvantages: Sets could fall on actors at any time, and seriously injure them.

...a great start to the James Bond films. They were supposed to do Thunderball first, but they were only given a million dollers to make it. And it shows. Badly at times. The film though does manage to scrap through, without too many set pieces snapping in half or falling over. The James Bond Theme was immortallised in this film, being showed at the now imfamous start sequence. ...

...the now immortal line "Bond. James Bond." Connery's performance in the film at this critical moment (it is the first time we see his face) is, frankly, awesome. Producing more testosterone and charisma that can possibly be healthy for one man, it is one of cinema's magic moments and would become a necessary recurring motif for the series. "Bond. James Bond." Of course, Connery is helped somewhat by Monty Norman outrageously good theme tune. ... ...
...classic, first-ever utterance of "Bond. James Bond"). When Bond later returns to his hotel room, he bursts in to find his intruder is Miss Temple, dressed only in one of his shirts and, ahem, playing with his balls. His golf balls. Despite being on a very tight schedule he decides he has time for a 'quickie' and succumbs to the series' first sexual statistic. Miss Temple was originally planned to be a regular character in the first six adventures ...

The first Bond

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Despite Crimpolene production standards, the first Bond injected the eye candy into the series. Among the glamour-girls, exotic villains and the explosive finale, the only things missing were the wisecracks, the gadgets and pre-credits set-piece. Filmed mostly in the Caribbean, Bond's task was to stop a Spectre agent jamming US ground-to-space communications using what looked like an oversized waffle iron. Dr No saw Bond at his toughest. No more ...

Advantages: The first one!
Disadvantages: No Q

...me as strange was when James Bond had made it onto Dr No's island, he sees a girl coming out of the water, so if full view of anyone that may be watching he decides to sing... There's a fair amount of action in this one, but the story is allowed to develop quite slowly. Some of the great characters from the Bond franchise do not appear yet, and are missed, especially Q with his gadget. Oh well, we didn't have to wait long for his appearance. ...

The first and the best?

Advantages: Sean Connery
Disadvantages: Showing it's age a bit

...We of course refer to James Bond. But as we are about to enter the 21st century, it's worth remembering that it didn't all start with amazing special effects and gadgets. No, there was once a time when the films use to follow a more simpler path. Dr No is such an example. History wise it will not only go down as the first Bond movie ever created but possibly the first ever modern day action film ever created. The formula (which hasn't changed for ...
...One good guy plus one VERY bad guy plus exotic locations plus attractive (and easy) women plus guns and bombs plus a secret base equals 007. Very simple really. And it's now a formula that has been copied and used since the early 60's. But it was Dr No that created it. Sean Connery brings life to the British secret agent, sent to Jamaica to discover why their listening post there has been switched off. He soon discovers that all is not what it seems ...

World Domination.

Advantages: The start of a legend.
Disadvantages: A little bit dated now.

...was the first of the James Bond films and in its time was one of the best. Unfortunately time has taken its toll and now some of the sequences do seem a little silly. This is mostly because in the 40 years since this film was made technology has moved on a lot, but at the time when the film was made it was all very new and innovative. Sean Connery was of course James Bond and in my mind he is still the best Bond that they have ever had. In the later ...
...to get their hands onto James Bond (and Vice Versa). The action sequences are fairly limited although there is the traditional big finish. Most of the film is set in Jamaica and during the film we are introduced to most of the traditional Bond film characters with Felix Lighter, M and Moneypenny. It is noticeable that Q does not feature at all in this film and the number of gadgets for Bond to use are very few indeed. All of these things came in ...

The start of something special

Advantages: The start of a legend...and a great way to start!
Disadvantages: Limited only because they didn't know how far it might go

...to be said that the James Bond franchise has become the longest running, most resiliant series of movies ever made. The one that started the ball rolling was Dr No, so what better way to start my series of opinions on James Bond movies than with the granddaddy of them all! Dr No is the first Bond movie and Connery was the first, and in many peoples hearts the only, James Bond. His first mission? Sent to Jamaica to investigate strange energy waves ...
...is a plot from a sinister madman, Dr Julius No, in the first of many world domination plots throughout the Bond series. An interesting fact for me is that Cubby Brocolli and Harry Saltzman, knowing that it was a deadly financial risk taking on this project called their production company something quite fitting - Eon Productions, Ltd - an acronym for "everything or nothing". It wasn't nothing, however, as it set the stage for the most popular and ...

A good start

Advantages: Good fun
Disadvantages: Not as good as 'Goldfinger'

The first, but not quite the best Bond movie, although it's still a hugely entertaining film. The opening, with British agents being knocked off in the Caribbean feels out of place, but from the moment that Bond himself is introduced, seducing a fellow gambler in a casino, all of the elements start to fall into place. Joseph Wiseman is somewhat unconvincing physically as Dr No, but has a genuinely menacing presence, and while Ursula Andress is one ...

James Bond Dr No

Advantages: DVD has extra features, The first Bond film so it was original. One of the earliest colour films and far of sunny locations.
Disadvantages: It's old now so it is quite dated. The special are nothing too special either.

...The film that really brought James Bond, 007 to life. By todays standards the film is prett dated, but that doesn't mean it can't be a great Bond action film, which it is. The film took the world by storm when coming out in 1961 and was a huge hit. The film started off an era of sexy women, exotic location and evil villans. The first Bond hit takes place in Jamacia were James Bond is sent to investigate the dissapearnce of a fellow agent. When B ...

On this island, Bond meets his first 'Bond girl'. The in-famous 'Honey'. Bond and Honey survive an attack from Dr.No's men, which sadly, Quarrel dies. Quarrel was played with immense charm and skill. The death of Quarrel is one of the most sobering pasrts of the film. Bond and Honey are ...

The gentleman spy

Advantages: The first
Disadvantages: Gadget free zone

The original James Bond film set new standards in it's day and is still fascinating viewing over 30 years later. From it's opening gun barrel start to it's explosive ending, this is a first rate thriller which sees everyone's favourite spy go head to head with the man with the steel hands. Unlike the later films, Dr No sees Bond rely totally on his wits (no gadgets or gizmos here) and it does make it seem a little more down to earth than the gadget ...
...does take a while for things to get going and although it may have been breakneck speed for 60's audiences, a modern crowd may find it a little pedestrian. Once things get started though you're in for a great little adventure that will keep you enthralled time and time again. Connery looks fabulous in the lead and brings just the right amount of sauve, malice, and downright sexiness to make the role his own (there simply has never been a better Bond). ...

...a tough Sean Connery as James Bond who has to fly to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of a fellow agent. It's not long before Bond meets Dr. No played by Joseph Wiseman, a perverted genius who is an agent of SPECTRE. Both Connery and Wiseman dominate the film with their presence. ...a tarantula in the secret agents bed which was reported as too being one of the most dangerous and frightening stunts Connery ever performed.. The problem with the film was that it is very sexual and Dr No was not Evil enough although I am not complaining because Noel Coward could have been casted as the villian which would have been a huge mistake. This is a great movie, but now may be slightly dated. I was shaken by the performances but the story ...

Advantages: It is all brilliant
Disadvantages: None

...Dr No is my favorite James Bond film to date. It has all the classic lines, the action filled scenes and best of all, beautifull bond girls! Check out those stunning locations. The terror that comes when Quarrel is burnt to death by a firebreather. And the way he kicks and punches his way out of danger, thanks to Q's fabulous gadgets!
