...and his kids are taken hostage by the robbers. The film starts very hard, very aggressive, very in your face and then fizzles out a bit until the house is burgled. The burglars are stupid and kill a cop (that's suicide basically) and then practically kill one of their hostages. As soon as Marshall (one of the robbers) kills the cop it's totally obvious he's in charge and not the other guy who seems to think he is. Bruce Willis seems to be eternally ... ...of this film is a hostage situation that goes wrong and the hostages and hostage taker all end up dead. OK, so Bruce's character dropped the ball there but he suddenly ends up in a dead end job as a small town sheriff. This really isn't explained why. Is he trying to escape from his 1 failure at his job that we know about? This would have been far more likely if we'd seen him at several negotiations and having all hostages killed at them all. Say ...

...Sixth Sense.
I suppose Hostage is Willis in retired action hero mode. He plays Jeff Talley, a hostage negotiator who swaps a pressurized job for small town life as a police chief when a negotiation goes wrong. In this small town very little happens in respect to crime. But then a group of youths break into a magnificent house in the hills and attempt to steal a high-end car. Their attempts at mild threats soon escalate and become a hostage situation. ... ...negotiations, shouting and helicopters.
Hostage starts out well with some interesting opening titles. The opening sequence of a hostage situation is very well staged apart from the casting of military/secret service ginger guy from 24 and various other films where he plays military or someone in authority. Anyway the whole build-up of the film is quite nice, slowly setting the stage and establishing characters. But then it starts to go off the rails. ...

Nothing ever happens in this small town, which suits Talley fine. However, Talley's wife and daughter are not so happy with the change and problems emerge due to that. Hostage - Would you sacrifice another family to save your own?
This is the dilemma facing Bruce Willis in the film Hostage. It's not one of his well known films as far as I'm concerned but it is still a Bruce Willis classic, i.e., lots of guns and violence etc. The film was released in 2005 and was actually based on a novel by Robert Crais.
As I don't like to spoil films in my reviews I will just give you a brief overview of the plot. Bruce Willis ... ...Angeles where he was a hostage negotiator but after a very harrowing last job he decides to move to a quieter pace of life - huh, little does he know!!
Yes, you've guessed it; things take a turn for the worst. Three troublesome kids (and in the beginning they do seem quite harmless) decide to steal a car from a magnificent mansion in the hills of California. Well, things go wrong and the house becomes a fortress with the hostages and the captors. ...

The Plot
Hostage negotiator Jeff Talley was at the top of his profession when he made an error and lost a hostage. Moving away and trying to mend bridges with his family, rifts caused by his professional errors, Talley gets a job as chief of police in the small town of Bristo Camino.
However, a hostage situation emerges at the house of a successful accountant who secretly works with a dangerous crime syndicate, and Talley's team is ... ...must overcome his fears and keep safe the individuals in the house, all the while unaware that the crime syndicate has its own vested interest in what is going on at the house.
The Cast and Performances
Bruce Willis has a reputation as a hard man, and does very well in this film to enforce this. The direction of Florent Emilio Sr with regard to Willis is clever, in letting him be Bruce Willis, and not adapting the actor too much for the role. Accountant ...

...and finds himself in a hostage situation (exactly the sort of situation he was running to avoid!). The film is action packed, and although it isn't to some people's taste, it had the right amount of action for me. Sure, some parts are way too corny, but they can be easily overlooked because the cast is great and they pull off the slightly hard to believe plot very well. And yes, the plot is farfetched, but not as much as first seems.
I was not let ...
