Advantages: Funny, fast-paced, enjoyable movie Disadvantages: Rather unsophisticated
...fact, very pleasantly surprised – High Heels and Low Lifes was a very successful balance of comedy and excitement – and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The film centres around two female lead characters. Shannon is a beautiful brunette nurse. Extremely dedicated to her job, she is let down in her personal life by an ignorant, disinterested boyfriend who spends all his time listening in on other people’s telephone conversations, and recording ... ...forward as it seems….
High Heels and Low Lifes is funny enough to be described as a comedy, but exciting enough to fall into the thriller genre – and the film makers have combined the two elements together very effectively. Despite some rather woolly scripting and the odd silly moment, there is nothing too farcical about this film – and the plot flows to a logical (if not slightly predictable) conclusion. The comedy of this film ...

Advantages: original script, many household names... Disadvantages: soundtrack
I went into 'High Heels and Low Lifes' knowing that it had been written by a writer whose credits included SpiceWorld and Miami 7, so as you can imagine, I wasn't overly excited about seeing a special preview of this film. However, don't let this writer's previous attempts put you off. This time, Kim Fuller has come up with a genius script which is highly original and guaranteed to make any member of the audience laugh.
The two stars of the film, ... ...overhear a phone call. However, the phone call they fall across lets them know of the identities of a group of men who are breaking into a nearby bank. Bored with the dull routine of their lives, they devise a plan to blackmail money from the robbers by threatening to go to the police if the money isn't received. However, the gang aren't forthcoming with the money and this is what the film revolves around.
Along with these two main characters, there's ...

Advantages: quite funny, great performances, easy to follow plot Disadvantages: slow start
Minnie Driver is the star of this Thelma&Louise-esque comic tale of big-money bank jobs and blackmail. Minnie plays Shannon, a honest and hard-working NHS nurse who, along with her best American friend, Frances (Mary McCormack), intercepts a phone call being made by a geezer who is in the process of assisting in a safety-deposit-box robbery. Having already attempted to report the incident to the police and not being believed on account of the fact ... ...the robbers netted £10m they decide to blackmail them for £300K. However things don't go quite as smoothly as the girls had hoped and soon their lives are in peril as word of their plan gets to the big boss man of the gang and a couple of inept comedy police-men seem to be just a couple of steps behind them. And that's it. No Russian doll multi-layered plot of cross and double cross, just a nice simple, easy to follow plot. And much to my surpirse ...

Advantages: Would suit a good mix of tastes - comedy, action, adventure... Disadvantages: Suppose you could argue about cinema prices... but nothing else comes to mind!
"High Heels and Low Lifes", starring Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack, is about two women (funnily enough!) who overhear a walkie-talkie conversation between some bank robbers during a heist in a local bank. They go to the police, but owing to the near-riot at the station, their somewhat flimsy report isn't given much attention, so they decide to take matters into their own hands, and blackmail the robbers. However things go slightly wrong when the ... ...who have somehow found out about their scheme, and are holding them to ransom.
On the surface, this film sounds like it would be a good action film, but it would be terribly unfair to write a review of it without mentioning some of the hilariously funny moments in the film, which had me rolling about laughing (although the people next to me in the cinema might not have agreed that it was quite as funny!) I won't spoil any of the jokes, but trust ...

Advantages: Top Brit flick Disadvantages: Too far fetched?
I’ll be perfectly honest in saying I didn’t expect much from this. People saying it was the British Thelma & Louise put me off straight away (as if it would be, they said that about Beautiful Creatures too) and after aforementioned Beautiful Creatures (which wasn’t all that) I thought it would be more of the same. I was wrong.
To compare this to Beautiful Creatures isn’t really do-able….this is much more a comedy whereas ... ...to BC, it is different.
Two Women, Shannon (Minnie Driver) and Frances (Mary McCormack), go out on the drink as it’s Shannon’s birthday. As they’re out getting lashed a bank robbery begins to take place. The robbers have got a guy on the roof as lookout, Danny, (the guy from Human Traffic who gets caught spanking the monkey) who is a bit of an idiot. After the girls get in and the robbery is still in progress, they pick up Danny ...

Advantages: Funny and fast paced Disadvantages: None
...The acting is of a high calibre, with Minnie Driver as Shannon and Mary McCormack as Frances striking sparks off each other. There is a fine supporting cast; Michael Gambon as crime lord Kerrigan, Danny Dyer as the unfortunate Danny and Mark Stephens of "Fast Show" fame as the dithering detective. Comedian Junior Simpson even makes a cameo as a drug dealer. The comedic pedigree of the film is hardly a surprise when you consider that the director ... ...Jone). I think we can finally forgive him for the debacle that was "Morons From Outer Space".
The action sequences are simple but effective, if somewhat unoriginal. But a nurse with a gun will always get my vote.
The film will always suffer comparisons with "Thelma and louise" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", but is far funnier than the former and far less gratuitously violent than the latter.
This is probably the ideal first-date movie, ...

Advantages: some amusing scenes, good british cast Disadvantages: seen it all before
High Heels and Lowlifes is set in London so obviously it has criminals and crime as it's main plot. However unlike the wave of bad british crime films we've had to endure in the last year this film actually has a good cast and decent laughs. Minnie Driver plays Shannon, a hospital nurse who's burned out in her job. Her american friend is a struggling actress Frances (Mary McCormack). One night they overhear a gang robbing a bank thanks to a modern ... ...turning a blind eye they try to blackmail the robbers into getting some of the big loot that has been stolen. Naturally things don't go to plan and soon they find themsleves up against an old pro criminal and have two detectives on their tale. The film is directed by Mel Smith and he manages to make this an entertaining if somewhat lightweight affair. The two leads work well together and have some witty banter. But it's the criminal element and the ...

Advantages: The two female leads Disadvantages: The male characters are seem to be sadly lacking
This film is worth checking out if you like tales where the girls make fun of the boys. It's not classic cinema, but it's a bit of fun. Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack star as the two London-based best friends, who stumble into the world of bank robberies, blackmail, and ambushes.
It is a little bit like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but also, as has been mentioned in several reviews, quite like a Bridget Jones version of it.
So, it's not ... ...the Thelma and Louise style leads, but there have been so many British gangster films lately it's hard to see how any could be that original, and, another thing is, who this film's produced by.
Mel Smith directs, and Kim Fuller is the scriptwriter (he also wrote SpiceWorld), so we are not talking trendy young things here, this film is the product of middle aged men, and it's sad, but I got the feeling that the characters they enjoyed producing most ...

Advantages: there is not any at all Disadvantages: It is not a comedy, boring, ordinary
...some say "its performances distinguishes High Heels from some recent British comedies", as far as I am concerned it is very difficult to distinguish this movie from the others" There is just about enough stuff to fill its 80 minute running time. There is not a lot to say about this movie, There is alot of talk but no real substance. High Heels drifts in places as a result of some bland acting and unmemorable scenes, but isnt it just a trait of British ...

Advantages: Good fun and exciting! Disadvantages: It ends too soon.
At last another Brit flick to rival four weddings.
This is a fantastic, riot of a film that will have you desperate to have a few drinks listen to cheesy music and buy a scanner!
Minnie Driver plays Shannon, a nurse who's good for nothing boyfriend has forgotten her birthday.
He's too busy making his "art" for which he samples voices and uses some kind of scanning device that picks up people talking from outside.
So depressed she kicks her boyfriend ... ...Mary Mccormack.
shes an actress who isn't particularly good!
They decide to go out and get verrrry drunk to celebrate shannon's birthday & dumping her loser boyfriend.
Once home they overhear details of a bank robbery through the scanner. They go to their local police who are not interested, but the next day 2 detectives
are on the case to find them for more information, and the only leads they have are that 1 is blonde and 1 is brunette and they ...

Advantages: Easy to follow and light-hearted Disadvantages: Slightly camp at times
For anyone who has read any of my other film reviews this one will be more of an advert than a proper review because of the circumstances surrounding my viewing of the film.
Minnie Driver is one of the main stars in this British crime-comedy all about two ladies who try to blackmail a gang of crooks with strange and highly amusing consequences.
Driver plays an English nurse who lives with her best-friend and unemployed - blonde bimbo - actress ... ...it's nationality these days, who is played by Mary McCormack.
Anyway. They get the number of a bloke they meet and one night they think they hear a bank robbery going on. They report it to the police who in true English fashion ignore the report. Anyway, the robbery did happen and the two hapless heroines piece together the pieces.
Using a mobile number they were given they set up a deal worth 300,000 pounds and then wait. Well the deal goes awry ...

...I could watch was indeed High Heels and Low Lives. I had heard reviews of it, a chick flick was the most memorable, oh dear I thought. Well I bought my ticket and went in. Advantages: Fantastic British Comedy (be proud!) Disadvantages: Minnie Driver's hair!
I managed to get free tickets to last nights screening in London through a competition e-zim.com ran. The film is excellent. The 'High Heels' come in the form of the fantastic Minnie Driver (a comedy timing genius) and the American actress Mary McCormack. The film also stars Danny Dyer (Human Traffic), Kevin McNally and a superb cameo from Michael Gambon. Also any Fast Show fans are in for a treat as one half a pair of hilarious, dodgy detectives ... ...film itself starts when the girls get particular drunk, overhear the mobile conversation of an idiotic bank robber Danny and decide to blackmail him and his mates (making up the 'Low Life' element of the film). 'High Heels' is filmed in and around London (which always makes for interesting viewing if, like me you live there). This is a very funny female Lock Stock. Go and see it!! ...

Advantages: Great fun and great cast Disadvantages: A touch realistic but what the hell!
This is a typical example of a feelgood British summer comedy. Two attractive but scatty girls (played by Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack) find themselves embroiled in a "bank job" when hearing a mobile phone conversation on a geeky boyfriend's surveillance equipment. Their efforts to alert the police fall on deaf ears and after hearing of the subsequent £10 million booty they decide to bribe the gangsters for a share of the takings. What follows ... ...the gang leader (Mason played admirably by Kevin McNally) whilst his failed efforts to get the girls off his trails gives his boss (camply played by Michael Gambon) severe palpitations.
Eventually the girls break into Mason's mansion and a series of mishape ensue culminating in a hilarious shoot-out. The girls of course win in the end and buy a plethora of medical eqipment for the local hospital and then drive off in their newly bought convertible ...

Advantages: Good quirky movie for those who like to keep the brain in gear Disadvantages: Unlikely to be around for long
The latest Mel Brooks product to hit the big screen is something of a gem, all be it a little rough round the edges and not to be taken to seriously.
Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack start as nurse and actress respectively. Minnie's boyfriend spends his time listening to his scanner and recording voices for his 'verbal masterpiece'. After getting very drunk the two girls pick up the phone conversation between a group robbing a safty deposite box ... ...can only be decsribed as a farce slips the girls further and further into trouble with the hoods whilst keeping a step ahead of the inept pair of cops who never quite manage to keep up.
This is never going to be a hugh hit but I found it very enjoyable and the sort of movie that is better made here than in the states. It is also very funny in parts although it is unlikely that fits of laughter will occur at any point.
It is also unlikely that it ...
