Hannibal - The Lambs Have Grown Up

Advantages: Excellent Plot, Good Extras, It's Hannibal the Cannibal for God's Sake
Disadvantages: Julianne Moore not as good as Jodie Foster, Not as fast paces as SOTL but almost as good.

...is a continuation of the Hannibal Lecter story, but there is no seriel killer to hunt and no race against the clock to save the day. Silence was a crime thriller, while Hannibal is more focused on the character interaction, suspense and a little romance. Returning as the title character, Anthony Hopkins delivers a fantastic performance. In Silence Hannibal was more of an enigma, held behind the glass for most of the movie. But this is his movie. ...
...liked. The plot of Hannibal is based on Thomas Harris’ best seller by the same name (minus the terrible ending). FBI agent Clarice has become more of a quiet, moody loner who doesn't play bureaucratic games much to the chagrin of Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) . A botched drug raid results in her demotion and at the request of Lecter's only surviving victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), she is suspended to lure Lecter out of hiding. The hideously ...

Well hello Clarice...

Advantages: Hopkins
Disadvantages: Crappy storyline

...re-assigned onto the Lector case, Hannibal takes a renewed interest in his old acquaintance. Meanwhile Mason Verger, one of Hannibal’s former patients and the only victim to survive, has a plan to capture his tormentor and reap a rather grisly revenge. Thus begins a cat and mouse chase involving a mercenary Italian cop, some corrupt State Dept. types and the discredited Starling as bait. There are several problems with this movie; as a psychological ...
...States without recognition. Furthermore, Hannibal himself is just too charismatic - apart from his penchant for sautéed human brains, he's a cultured, sophisticated fellow who you'd like to have round for dinner...(perhaps) The monstrous medical anomaly of SOTL has transformed into a rougue-ish anti-hero whose company the audience can't help but enjoy. This slightly detracts from his authority as a villain with the power to terrify, but Hopkins' ...

I really wish I hadn't bothered.

Advantages: the first half is ok.
Disadvantages: lacking in style, grim without being cool.

...you new to this, Dr Hannibal Lecter is a canibal (with a name like Hannibal, what hope is there - it's that or elephants.....) he kills with style, he eats people's livers, but he'll cook them and serve them with a fine wine, he's scary, smooth, far too clever and stylish in a horrible sort of way. The first film sees him in top security prison, heping the FBI (Clariss Starling) track down a serial killer. At the end of the film he eascapes. "Hannibal" ...

Now, thrown into this is the only victim of Hannibal's to survive - a chap called Verger Mason (Oldman) who has mutliated himself, under Hannibal's influence. He's also in a wheelchair. Complaint one - we see too much. The face Oldman wears is quite vile, but you gradually get used to it, which isn't really very good for maintianing an atmosphere. Mason is an odious ...

Tasty, But Maybe A Bit Off

Advantages: Nicely shot, well scripted and acted
Disadvantages: Just not a patch on the prequel, but does that matter?

...I am coming at The Hannibal Lector craze from a purely celluloid approach. In “Hannibal” we first see ‘Hannibal The Cannibal’ living under an alter ego in Florence, Italy. Looking quite contented with his current life, but then he always did. Agent Clarice Starling of the FBI on the other hand has moved up in the world - she is now well worn and confident in her job, so when a letter arrives out of the blue on her desk from ...
...returning to the role of Hannibal and Julianne Moore stepping into Jodie Foster’s shoes for the part of Starling. Hopkins is good. He was never going to be anything else, the part had been hyped up as soon as he signed to do it, and it will always be below everyone’s expectations, but never the less it is a very good performance. Julianne Moore does well with what she is given, which isn’t too much, but then again – this ...

I'm giving serious thought, to eating your wife

Advantages: The main advantage of this film was the way in which Hannibal has become the main character rather then Buffalo Bill from the original. The scenes have been build up with suspense and never does the reader loose intrest.
Disadvantages: The gore level of this piece was prehaps a bit over the top. And as I said much of it was not needed but then it did make the film all that more memorable.

...a supporting figure here. As Hannibal himself has been let free, the story focuses on him instead. After Clarice is demoted after a botched drug bust, we are launched into the main story. Before reading ahead please understand that this film is in no way intended for children and the 18 certificate is very appropriate for this film. Some scenes even the people who can stomach anything else seen in a film might reach for the bowl in this film. A ...
...the trick is to get Hannibal to come to her instead of them going to find him. And it works. But before all of this is happening an Italian detective named Pazzi wants the reward for Hannibal's capture, which turns out to be a predictably bad idea. Even though the result of his chase seems rather obvious, I'll give Scott credit for maintaining a respectable amount of tension throughout these scenes. When will he attack? All the music playing perfectly ...

...our expectations? Dr Hannibal Lecter is, once more, portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins. Jodie Foster’s role of Clarice is filled by Julianne Moore and Gary Oldman plays a victim of Lecter’s, Mason Verger, who wants to reek revenge. STORY Verger, who is hideously scarred and confined to a wheelchair has been breeding pigs, which he will use to torture Lecter once he catches him. ...trying to capture him in order to obtain the FBI’s $3,000,000 reward for bringing in one of America’s Most Wanted. GORE Well, I have to concentrate on this aspect, after all this is one of the reasons most of us wanted to see the film. Verger tells Clarice what happened to him on the night he was attacked by Lecter. Lecter had drugged him and then handed him a piece of broken mirror and told him to cut off his face. Bizarrely Verger proceeds to do ...

Hannibal is the sequel to the thriller Silence of Lambs and anyone who has seen the first film will know how disturbing it was. Hannibal had a lot to live up to, Jodie Foster is missing from the line up of stars and Julianne Moore takes her place as Clarice Starling. ...is just what this film has in abundance. It was never going to be another Lambs and it would be pointless to compare the two becasue in this one the animal is let out of the cage. With the scary image of Lecter staring out of the shadows on the artwork I will begin. This is all turned on its head in the first 10 minutes when a bungled drugs raid is used to disgrace Starling. The whole plot seemingly orchestrated to lure Hannibal from his hiding place, by Mason Verger, millionaire and only surviving victim of Hannibal Lecter....... ...
...point to make is that Hannibal is NOT to be compared with 'Silence' they are completely different stories - If you want to see what has become a definition of a sequel these days, you may as well watch the original again. The second point is that I think they made a good job of translating the book onto the screen, it had to be condensed the completed film is still 126 minutes long, so some scenes had to go. In my honest opinion I think Thomas Harris ...

Back in the States, Clarice Starling, played this time by Julianne Moore rather than Jodie Foster, is in a career slump. Lector comes to America, ostensibly to deal with Starling's superiors (including a predictably lunatic Ray Liotta), and test Starling's faith in justice. And that last paragraph makes the plot sound much more interesting than it is. 'Hannibal' is nonsense, and it's dangerous, immoral nonsense. In 'The Silence of the Lambs', Lector was a terrifying animal, ...

We meet up again with Claris Starling (Julianne Moore), who is working on a drugs raid in downtown America somewhere.
