Martin & Debi's high school reunion

Advantages: John and Joan Cusack
Disadvantages: Spreads itself too thinly between genres

...into taking a job in Grosse Pointe, Detroit, his home town. This coincides with his high school reunion, which he has been deliberating about going too, as he will have to face up to his emotions. After some less than gentle persuasion by his office manager, Marcella, Martin finds himself back in his home town. Now, not only having to explain to all his old friends where he has been for the past 10 years, but he also has to deal with his emotions ...
...Although I like Grosse Pointe Blank, it confuses me as too what it is meant to be. Labeled as an action, romance, comedy, crime-thriller, it struggles to be overly effective in any one of them, and feels as if it spreads itself a little bit thin amongst all of them. There are some very good action sequences which focus around killing people, the romance comes from the unresolved feelings that Martin has for Debi. The comedy is not your typical laugh ...

Just how do you introduce yourself to someone you walked out on 10 years ago anyway...and then how do you tell them you've spent those 10 years killing people for money? As 'luck' would have it however, Martin gets a hit to perform in Grosse Point during the time of the reunion and ...
...all sure what you call Grosse Pointe Blank to be honest and despite seemingly being marketed as such when it was released, 'romantic comedy' isn't the label I would have attached to it. For sure, there are elements/a central theme of romance here, but mostly it's packed with some very black humour, a few scenes which wouldn't be out of place in a Tarantino flick including one very violent, bloody murder with a ball point pen and umm, yeah it's 'different'! ...

...my all-time favourite films – Grosse Pointe Blank. I first went to see this film at one of my college’s film nights – a bargain £2.00 entry fee, although they get the good films a few weeks after the main cinemas have stopped showing them. A sublime piece of film-making

Advantages: The performance, the script, the soundtrack... need I go on?
Disadvantages: Don't be daft

Grosse Pointe Blank is Hollywood film making at its most innovative and impressive and ranks as one of my favourite films of all time. It is directed by George Armitage and stars the epitome of cool John Cusack and the beautiful and talented Minnie Driver as the leads in a black comedy that seamlessly combines sublime action and touching romance with a script sharp enough to cut yourself on. As you may be able to tell I’m quite a fan. John ...

So the basic plot is relatively simple but this movie is less about contrived plot than magnificent script and delivery from the range of characters. Firstly we have Grocer (Dan Ackroyd), who is in the same ‘rarefied profession’ as Martin and is intent on setting ...

...possibly my all-time favourite flick Grosse Point Blank. Looked over for far too long, I felt that as a fan of the aforementioned movie I had a sacred duty to perform in attempting to bring this out from under the shadow of mediocrity, where it has languished for far too long, and into the light and also, with any luck, into people's DVD players too. There really is only one place to start this tale and that would be at the beginning, 10 years before the movie ...

Look who's turned up at the reunion!

Advantages: entertaining film
Disadvantages: none

What do you do when you are invited to your high school ten year reunion but you have spent those last ten years being a professional killer? Do you make up some boring subarban lifestyle or do you tell your former class mates what you actually do? This is the dilemma facing Martin Blank (played by John Cusack) in High School Blank. It's hard to decide exactly what genre this film fits. I would probably describe it as a romantic comedy with a few ...

There are no Blanks fired in this movie

Advantages: Darkly comic yet stylish; flowing action

Grosse Pointe Blank is a black comedy, rich in humour and style; witty without being glib, charming without being sentimental; fast paced, delightful and thoroughly enjoyable. John Cusack plays Martin Blank, a hitman who has lost his appetite for the 'job' and wants out. However, getting out is not easy and he is persuaded by various parties that a final job is due. Concindentally, it is at Grosse Pointe where he has also been invited to his High ...

...And it is in Grosse Point Blank that we find him starring in a grown up version of the eighties movie. He plays a hitman who returns to his home town for a high school reunion, meets his old love, and struggles to resolve old high school rivalries. Taking all the features the twenty to thirty years olds loved, George Armitage has directed a classic with an added a splash of originality, ...

Gun for Hire

Advantages: Action packed and amusing
Disadvantages: None

Grosse Point Blank stars John Cusack, Dan Ackroyd and Minnie Driver. Cusack and Ackroyd are both freelance assassins who are quite happy to kill people for hire, they are not only in competition but also in dispute as Ackroyd want to form a union in order to protect their rights and stop different killers bidding for each others contracts while Cusack is against the idea, naturally when you get a dispute between killers it is not always polite negotiations. ...

A Brilliant Film

Advantages: Witty dialogue, good on-screen chemistry.
Disadvantages: A bit too much bad language for my liking.

I went to see Grosse Pointe Blank with my husband, expecting a very violent, and gory film. That was true to a certain extent, but my main thought when i came out, was "what a great romantic comedy!". Yes, the film is quite violent in places, but that is more than compensated for in its witty dialogue, and the on-screen chemistry between the main stars (John Cusack and Minnie Driver). This film is a great choice if you both want to see different ...

...away from the town of Grosse Pointe on the night of his high school prom, telling no one where he was going, and leaving his date behind. Now he's had an invite to the ten year reunion. He's also in town to do a little business. This is a wonderful film. I know, you wouldn't expect a film about a hitman to be that funny; but Grosse Pointe Blank pulls it off marvellously. John Cusack plays the role incredibly straight - he tells people what he does ...
...He meets up with his old girlfriend, a number of his friends, and quite a few people out to make sure that this is the last job he ever does. The film is a little gory in places (though nowhere near as bad as some others I've seen), but, well, he is a hitman; and as he says, if he turns up on your doorstep, chances are you've done something to bring him there. I did really enjoy this film. I would heartily recommend it. ...

A comedy about a hitman? Read on...

Advantages: One of the best films of the past ten years
Disadvantages: Not many

Grosse Point Blank is a subtle romantic comedy about hitman Martin Blank (John Cusack) who decides to do one last job before a change of career - only the last job is in the small Detroit town of Grosse Point, the town where Blank grew up, at the same time at which there is Blank's 10 year high school reunion, and to top it off all his high school friends including the prom date he stood up, Debi Newberry(Minnie Driver), who all have no idea what ...
...Reluctantly, Blank decides to attend the reunion, but ponders "What would I say to them? That I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork?". The killing does take the back burner for most of the film with the comedy aspect shining through. There is also some of the most memorable quotes from a film in recent years, with Blank trying to justify his choice of career by pointing out that "A psychopath kills for no reason. I kill for money.". This ...

just as if all your friends have swelled

Advantages: cool, nostalgic, funny, romantic, guns.
Disadvantages: too short. no sequel.

Take a deep breath: Marvellous nostalgia, great tunes, sharp dialogue, John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Dan Ackroyd as a baddie, jokes, guns, the nature of love, life, and contract killing. Explosions, car chases (few,) your friends from High School (who have swelled,) and many, many reasons why the 80s shouldn't just die, they should be exploded like an Ultimart.
