- and I'm not just saying that because I always wanted to be Scarlett O'hara. Although I did. Especially with those frocks..
It is sad but true that they don't make movies like this any more. I can't think of a single modern film that can hold a candle to this sweeping and unashamed epic romance. It's a true classic, with two of the performances of the century playing the leads - Scarlett and Rhett. If you don't know the story I won't spoil it here, ... ...social mores, racism, war, honour, glory and a whole host of other totally unfashionable 'big' themes so rarely explored properly in cinema these days - and makes no apology for it. And incidentally, it's also an unusually good introduction to life before and after the American civil war. Part of it's magic, I think, is that the world in which it is set is far from blissful. It does not shy from portraying the foolish high spirits with which the ...

Advantages: Truly epic with a breathtaking cast. Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea.
It's amazing how fresh this movie still is when other 'epic' Hollywood productions of its era have long since faded. There is no doubt, however, that this one still shines, and oh boy how it shines.
At four hours it is certainly long, but every minute of those four hours is packed with good things. For a start there is Vivien Leigh as the feisty heroine you just love to hate and Clarke Gable as Rhett Butler, who loves to hate her just as much as ... ...it hurts. The supporting cast are also magnificent and you can see why they picked up so many Oscars.
And if that's not enough for you there's always the famous sets. I believe, though I could be wrong, that this was the first film to be shot in glorious technicolour, and thank goodness it was. Wether during the lavish ballroom scenes or the dramatic sunsets the whole thing just glows. The film is mainly set in the Deep South at the time of the ...

Advantages: A true emotional rollercoaster from the most enthralling Hollywood Epic ever made. Disadvantages: There are few faults in this film, but one may be the forced intermission.
This film has so many stories woven into its American Civil War era drama and so many strong characters that you need to watch it several times to appreciatte all the nuances. If you enjoy great stories told with passion you will treasure this film forever.

However, like some other films, it works despite all its faults. Advantages: Excellent believable story! Disadvantages: can't think of any!!
Where can I start about how I like this movie? Alot of people focus on the fact that it is a romantic story but I think it is so much more than that.
It shows how this young girls stubborness and situation in life always determines her future path until she realizes that she got it all wrong. It's a fantastic movie, to see her progression as young girl with no worries to one who has to toughen up to keep the family and business together. The movie ... ...and her world. The movie not only follows her life, it follows a long period of time in which everything in her world changes. You see it move from the one phase, into the other and so on and with it you see what Scarlett is capable of and how strong she is as a woman.
Rhett Butler plays perfectly the role of the older man who understand the psyche of women and society easily because he has seen it and done it all. The way he so beautifully executes ...

Gone with the Wind was made in 1939 in Colour and starred Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
It was a big budget film, which showed the in way the days of the American civil war and the towns and farms of the time were lovingly recreated to every detail.

Advantages: Great story, a powerhouse performance from Viven Leigh Disadvantages: None!
So many people dismiss Gone With The Wind because they think it is "just a love story". Anyone who is a fan of this film knows that the love story, although central to its storyline, is not the ultimate theme of the film.
In Scarlett O'Hara we have a strong heroine - a woman who ran her own business', had her own money, and defied convention whenever possible - and a character who, by the end of the movie has fought death, war, destruction of her ... ...society she lived in. And yet, she isn't a pleasant character - she is selfish, vain and greedy - and we adore her for it! Scarlett would never have survived all her trials without these characteristics, but by the end of the film she reaches a kind of epiphany - realising that she hasn't just relied on herself but on those in her life she considered to be weaker than herself - her mother and Melanie, her mainstay.
Scarlett learns the mistakes she ...

Quick review of Gone With The Wind (DVD)
Based on Margaret Mitchell´s novel, this tale of a strong, unscrupulous woman fighting through American Civil War and rebuilding her life in fallen South is, even after 70 years, an impressive film. Actually, this is a true "visually breathtaking epic", an expression so often - and fallaciously - stamped to modern films! Gorgeously jewel-like old Technicolor makes the ornate sets and lushly dresses look fantastic. The visual beauty of this film and it´s heroine, that grandly named Scarlett, is legendary. On the other hand, the Southerners of the film are glorified trash - vermins without any heart or purpose. The love story between the main couple does not work either - both characters treat each others like dirty trash. But as an epic... wow! ...

Gone With The Wind, could you say anything wrong about it. It is a classic everyone that has seen it admires the film and the famous Scarlett O'hara for her powerful personality.
