Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS....
more...Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier--who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm--and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance, albeit mostly taboo. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. GLADIATOR is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul.

The best historical film since Spartacus
Review of Gladiator DVD by greggamuffin

Advantages: Well played characters, great effects and fight scenes, great storyline and superb screenplay!!!
Disadvantages: There are no seemingly visible faults in this film!!!

...to the top in the Gladiator world, he makes it to the colosseum, where he meets the new emperor! I wont tell you the rest because it will spoil it! This is a purely maturful film from acclaimed director Ridley Scott. Some of the effects and all of the fight scenes are superb. With the film also staring and being dedicated to the late Oliver Reed who died during filming, this is a truly great epic who's acting, screenplay, storyline, characters ... Read review

Emperor's new clothes
Review of Gladiator DVD by emmi

Advantages: no advantages
Disadvantages:

...down... but what a disappointment Gladiator was. This film is much ado about nothing. Boring with an embarrassingly bad script, its ideology should also be questioned. Some of my favourite films are very violent, but in none of them is violence as pointless and celebrated in the same disgusting and uncritical way as it is here. We haven't matured one drop in 2000 years if this is what entertains us today. And I didn't even find it entertaining. Waste ... Read review

CLASSIC ROMAN SAGA
Review of Gladiator DVD by YSTALYFERA

Advantages: A CLASSIC IN MODERN TIMES
Disadvantages: SHAME ABOUT OLLY

I went to this movie for one of movies draws-Action! And not since Braveheart have I been slammed with spine-tingling, raw in your face blood, guts and gore. But what drew me in was what I didn't expect to find in movies like these types today-a story. Albeit, some of the dialogue had me laughing out loud-who says 'vexed' or "I want to hold and embrace them into my bosom tightly." Even the Romans would be laughing at that one. And the sympathy that ... Read review

Pay close attention to the end of the film!
Review of Gladiator DVD by Luso

Advantages: Entertaining, good acting, great special effects, excellent direction.
Disadvantages: Some moments of the film are too slow.

...general is turned into a Gladiator that will uncover the true emperor as a murderer. This film is entertaining but has, in my opinion, a very special moment - the end. If you haven't seen it, I won't ruin it for you, but try to look at the end of the film once again and notice how well designed "the doors" are, the trees, the passage. I felt this is extremely close to the real thing, and was particularly touched by the ending. A must see if you love ... Read review

Not worthy of the hype
Review of Gladiator DVD by elliff

Advantages: Good action scenes.
Disadvantages: A total lack of a plot or story.

This is yet another big budget hollywood film which seems to have spent millions on special effects, star names and publicity but failed to spend any money on a half decent script or storyline. I have to say this is one of the poorer efforts to come out of hollywood recently. The plot is basic and flimsy to say the least. The plot is a premise which has been used millions of times before, good guy fighting bad guy, bad guy truimphing, good guy coming ... Read review

William Wallace
Review of Gladiator DVD by stefthorne

Advantages: exciting, tense, great imagery
Disadvantages: bit too long, too much like Rob Roy

Gladiator is very impressive in terms of special effects and creating a loud, heroic and exciting atmosphere. The direction, the costumes, the animation and the tension of the plot is brought together very smoothly. The battle scenes at the beginning are very impressive and the film does not shy away from violence and gore and some nasty images just because chidren may be watching. The one thing that spoils it all is not the direction or the plot ... Read review

Review of Gladiator DVD by mleeng

Advantages: excellent special effects, excellent action sequence
Disadvantages: don't like to bad dude

This Movie is another one of those movies that just grabs you by the balls, from the first scene you can feel the atmosphere boiling up and the fear in the solidiers going into battle. The fight scene then explodes at our Hero Maximus does his gORY FIGHT SCENES! The reason I like this film is that it got everything you want from a movies and it does it do emotionally , I mean seeing maxium family hung is a very tramatic thing, and seeing the queen ... Advantages: Very enjoyable, but very draining emotionally ;)
Disadvantages: sometimes the plot is very unsubstanstial

...man, who runs his own Gladiator show in a small town. Maximus is selected to participate in this, and it is from here that he reaches Rome. I'll not tell you what happens next, because if you've seen it already you'll know, and if you haven't, hopefully you'll want to know what happens. The film is sumptuously shot by Ridley Scott, but the film itself hangs on the performance of its actors. Joaquin Phoenix delivers an excellent turn as Emperor ... Read review

A modern cinematic epic
Review of Gladiator DVD by bugsy

Advantages: A masterpiece
Disadvantages: Rather long

Gladiator is an excellent film blending together historical characters, action and a moving story into a fantastic journey from the the Germanic battlefield to the pomp and splendour of Rome at its height. From the opening scene Gladiator sucks you in to the world in Roman times and the thing that really stands out about this film is the feeling of authenticity, of really being there. The story follows the central character, Maximus, played by ... Read review

Review of Gladiator DVD by siany

Advantages: Not bad action sequences
Disadvantages: Not too enthralling

What can i say about this infamous film? The critics love it, the cinema goers love it,what can go wrong?Well, to be honest, i thought it was alright, really due to the incredible acting of Jooaquin Pheonix. "Gladiator", Russel Crowe is good at playing his part but i'm still confused as we speak about what accent he really did have.He does make us feel really sorry for him and, especially after his wife and child is killed ,but, the plots lack of ... Review of Gladiator DVD by pauluk

Advantages: Great fighting scenes
Disadvantages: Abit slow at the start

Gladiator is a film set in Roman times and it is a story of a heroic soldier who fights for Rome and the two most important things to him are Rome and his family. The film starts with a battle as Maximus the main star is about to lead the Romans into battle against the Vikings. He gives his side a loyal speech. He has a great friendship with the Empoeror and honours him and would never be disloyal to him. Once the battle won evryone is hailing ... Read review

Review of Gladiator DVD by MonkeyboyUK

Advantages: A true epic.
Disadvantages: Drags in places

Make no mistake about it. Gladiator is a BIG film. Big enough to make Titanic look like the Blair Witch project in comparison. And it is not only a film of huge scale but also a film of great accomplishments: the film that propelled Russell Crowe into the Hollywood A-list, a film that reminds us just why we ever thought Ridley Scott was a good director in the first place, and a film that proves Oliver Reed was always more than everyone's favourite ... Review of Gladiator DVD by JeffSumm

Advantages: Exciting, Memorable
Disadvantages:

...I did manage to aviod Gladiator for several weeks after its release. I was persuaded to see it by my wife, who had heard all sorts of excellent reviews, etc. Well, seeing it was a great decision. The story follows a Roman General from being the great conquerer and a favourite of the Emperor to a lowly gladiator who narrowly escaped death in the order of the new Emperor. Fortunately for him he was the type of general who led his troops into battle ... Read review

Gladiator
Review of Gladiator DVD by ros145

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

This movie is nothing short of brilliant, simply brilliant. It is honest in every way. Russell Crowe is so natural as Maximus (as he is in every role he undertakes). Joaquin Phoenix was a dynamite casting choice, and unlike many movie villains, he was complex and had such a wonderful history behind his actions. The whole cast was MADE to act with each other. The casting choices were perfect. The movie is magical because it so easily makes the audience ... Read review

Only 3 hours?
Review of Gladiator DVD by bjlangley

Advantages: An epic, very entertaining
Disadvantages: You might cry at the ending

When you realise that the film you are about to see is an epic, lasting over three hours you start to wonder "will I notice if my bum goes numb?". In this case the film could easily have been longer and you still wouldn't notice, such is the enjoyment factor. Admittedly there are moments when the plot slows down a little, but these work in the films favour as they build the characters and make waiting for the action all the more worthwile. The special ...
