...be honest, I didn't think Gladiator would be my type of film. I'm not really into the type of story it portrays, but after listening to many friends who had seen it rave about it, I took my girlfriend along and watched it with an open mind. The story starts pretty immediately with lots of blood and gore and fighting as Maximus (the main character, Russell Crowe) is leading his division of the Roman Army in battle against a large group of local opoposition. ...
...as when Maximus as a gladiator turns round and reveals his true identity to the new Caeser ("husband to a murdered wife, father to a murdered son" etc.) and the acting is really top quality. The fighting is brilliant, but it is not done in a violent way, almost a necessary way which I found amazing. You definitely leave the cinema with feelings for a number of the characters, and the film crew have definitely managed to achieve an impressive level ...

...make you understand why Gladiator is doing what he is. I found the film easy to follow and easy to watch. This film gave me a far better insight into what went on in the arena. Wow, this film is outstanding. Having seen the tantalizing trailers for some time I was worried that it would be disappointing, as a large number of over-hyped Hollywood blockbusters often are (need I mention Godzilla?). However, this was most certainly not the case. Just for beginners the score was amazing, the special effects brilliant and Russel Crowe was, um, let me quote Empire magazine....."Russell Crowe was obviously born in a hard month, ...
...hardnes.!" And this is where I think some of the films brilliance should be acredited too. Russell Crowe is, without doubt, one of the most talented men in acting at the moment. His performancs in The Insider and L.A. Confidential being of particular note. His scope to play vastly different roles is exceptional. But although the film contains some brilliant acting, the stunning choreographed battle sequences and a moving sound-track are also noteworthy. ...

After the limp 'White Squall' and the embarrassing debacle of 'GI Jane', Ridley Scott seems to be finally showing signs of a return to form with this well-considered take on the Roman epic. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a victorious general who's entrusted with the future of the Empire by the dying Caesar (an excellent Richard Harris) only to be double-crossed and sentenced to death by the new Caesar, Comodus played by Joaquin Pheonix. ...his batteries and become a Gladiator and is one of the best Gladiators around. He also meets some friends to begin to like him and show a lot of respect. The new emperor who is know in Rome is given his power in a huge show and he requests some Gladiators to perform is the Coliseum. They go of to Rome to fight and Maximus is the best there. The story revolves from there. The film only really starts going after about an hour but all the way through ...

I went to this movie for one of movies draws-Action! And not since Braveheart have I been slammed with spine-tingling, raw in your face blood, guts and gore. But what drew me in was what I didn't expect to find in movies like these types today-a story. Albeit, some of the dialogue had me laughing out loud-who says 'vexed' or "I want to hold and embrace them into my bosom tightly." Even the Romans would be laughing at that one. If you haven't seen it, I won't ruin it for you, but try to look at the end of the film once again and notice how well designed "the doors" are, the trees, the passage. This is yet another big budget hollywood film which seems to have spent millions on special effects, star names and publicity but failed to spend any money on a half decent script or storyline. I have to say this is one of the poorer efforts to come out of hollywood recently. The plot is basic and flimsy to say the least. The direction, the costumes, the animation and the tension of the plot is brought together very smoothly. This Movie is another one of those movies that just grabs you by the balls, from the first scene you can feel the atmosphere boiling up and the fear in the solidiers going into battle. Gladiator is an excellent film blending together historical characters, action and a moving story into a fantastic journey from the the Germanic battlefield to the pomp and splendour of Rome at its height. From the opening scene Gladiator sucks you in to the world in Roman times and the thing that really stands out about this film is the feeling of authenticity, of really being there. The story follows the central character, Maximus, played by Russel ...

All in all Gladiator is an awe-inspiring movie, an example which I hope is followed as it's been a long time since I've seen a film like this.
