If you haven't seen it, I won't ruin it for you, but try to look at the end of the film once again and notice how well designed "the doors" are, the trees, the passage. This is yet another big budget hollywood film which seems to have spent millions on special effects, star names and publicity but failed to spend any money on a half decent script or storyline. I have to say this is one of the poorer efforts to come out of hollywood recently. The plot is basic and flimsy to say the least. Gladiator is very impressive in terms of special effects and creating a loud, heroic and exciting atmosphere. The direction, the costumes, the animation and the tension of the plot is brought together very smoothly. The battle scenes at the beginning are very impressive and the film does not shy away from violence and gore and some nasty images just because chidren may be watching. This Movie is another one of those movies that just grabs you by the balls, from the first scene you can feel the atmosphere boiling up and the fear in the solidiers going into battle. The fight scene then explodes at our Hero Maximus does his gORY FIGHT SCENES! ...man, who runs his own Gladiator show in a small town. Maximus is selected to participate in this, and it is from here that he reaches Rome. Gladiator is an excellent film blending together historical characters, action and a moving story into a fantastic journey from the the Germanic battlefield to the pomp and splendour of Rome at its height. Make no mistake about it. Gladiator is a BIG film. Big enough to make Titanic look like the Blair Witch project in comparison. ...I did manage to aviod Gladiator for several weeks after its release. I was persuaded to see it by my wife, who had heard all sorts of excellent reviews, etc. Well, seeing it was a great decision. The story follows a Roman General from being the great conquerer and a favourite of the Emperor to a lowly gladiator who narrowly escaped death in the order of the new Emperor. This movie is nothing short of brilliant, simply brilliant. It is honest in every way. Russell Crowe is so natural as Maximus (as he is in every role he undertakes). Joaquin Phoenix was a dynamite casting choice, and unlike many movie villains, he was complex and had such a wonderful history behind his actions. The whole cast was MADE to act with each other. Advantages: An epic, very entertaining
Disadvantages: You might cry at the ending

When you realise that the film you are about to see is an epic, lasting over three hours you start to wonder "will I notice if my bum goes numb?". In this case the film could easily have been longer and you still wouldn't notice, such is the enjoyment factor. Admittedly there are moments when the plot slows down a little, but these work in the films favour as they build the characters and make waiting for the action all the more worthwile. The special ...
