Give it a Ghost of a Chance

Advantages: Likeable performances all round and enough funny moments.
Disadvantages: It's unoriginal and the direction is uninspired.

...and "Feels Like Heaven" (the ghost tries to achieve this aim through pestering and general annoyance), with a dash of "A Christmas Carol" (said member of the living is a misanthropic curmudgeon). The characterisation too is far from original. Bertram Pincus is a Scrooge-like figure, Frank is a smooth-talking philanderer and Gwen is the wronged woman trying to build a new life for herself. Of course her new beau is a too-good-to-be-true good-looking ...
...their relationships are going from the get-go. So there are few surprises as our hero becomes more human. However, there are a few little twists that liven things up. The dialogue is at its best with apparently off-the-cuff remarks from Gervais that seem to elicit real laughs from his co-stars. Otherwise it's fairly bland. I don't usually like Ricky Gervais in films, in fact I despise him, but he seems to be learning how to act, if his performance ...

When The Dead Might Need A Dentist

Advantages: Funny, quirky and very Ricky Gervais
Disadvantages: A bit dead I guess!

I was really keen to see this film after watching several trailers and programmes about it. It sounded funny, but also I was more keen because it had Ricky Gervais in it, and I like his style of humour. I would have seen it in the cinema but to be honest I haven't been out to see a film in ages. So I watched this at my mate's house. Story Bertram Pincus is a miserable old git. He hates people and has no patience for their conversation. In fact he ...
...patients would always have their mouths full so he'd never have to talk to anyone! Then he finds himself in the position of being the patient, going for a procudure on his colon, and is determined to go under GA, against medical advice. When he wakes, suddenly he finds himself being pursued by crowds of people, who seem fascinated that he can see them. There were complications while he was under GA, which caused him to die, well, for 7 minutes anyway. ...

Everyone from nurses from 1912 and construction workers from 2008 can see him. Bertram See's Dead People!

Advantages: good funny story, good acting
Disadvantages: Ricky Gervais is the lead actor!

...Bertram meets a ghost who is very smartly dressed called Frank who tells him that if he help him then he will keep the other ghosts away. Bertram decides he will help Frank and soon learns that he is helping Frank split his wife and her new fiancé up. The film is set in modern times in America so not much time or effort was needed for the sets or costumes but they all did look good. The music in the film was good and if not very memorable it was all appropriate for the places which it was used. The special effects in the ...

Highlighting Brit Rudeness

Advantages: Interesting... sometimes even absorbing.
Disadvantages: Ricky Gervais as main character.

...When one particularly resilient ghost manages to pester Pincus into helping him break up the impending marriage of his widow, Pincus, who is exceedingly rude and unpleasant to be around, falls for the widow himself. 'Ghost Town' is a reminder of how the Americans view the Brits… as rude and unconscionable denizens of a musty and out-dated nation that still believes in classes. The truth is, they're not that far off… but it's becoming a bit tedious ...
...and vulgarity. Although this imagery amuses the Americans and is so obviously responsible for Ricky Gervais's success in the USA, I, for one, was not particularly amused by the main character's OTT rudeness, and his unredeemable nastiness and callousness. To me, British humour is synonymous with 'Death at a Funeral', 'Keeping Mum', 'Hot Fuzz', 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels', and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. All of these movies highlight ...

Who said ghosts were scary?

Advantages: amazingly funny, great cast, atmosphere in cinema
Disadvantages: /

...had been waiting to see Ghost Town since I first saw the trailers, and now I have had the chance, and what a film it was! Ghost Town, set in Manhattan, is a film about one man, a dentist, named Dr. Bertram Pincus. He goes in for a bowel operation and manages to die for seven minutes on the table. When he awakes and leaves the hospital, he discovers he can see the dead people (the ghosts!). All these ghosts keep pestering him to help them, but none ...
...its cast. And believe me, Ghost Time has an amazing cast! Pincus is played by none other than Ricky Gervais. That guy really does crack me up so much; he's hysterical! I think he was best suited to Pincus, and his British accent certainly did stand out against the Americans. Frank is fantastically played by Greg Kinnear. I'd not heard of him before (or so I thought), but straight away I fell in love with his talent. After searching him on the web, ...

Seeing the dead

Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: Not as funny as it could have been

...to do. I quite enjoy ghost stories, so the idea of someone being able to commune with ghosts is appealing; plus it gives rise to some funny moments. I wouldn't say I laughed out loud more than a couple of times during the course of the film, but I did smile a lot, something that doesn't seem to happen all that often these days. And it is good, clean fun. I'm not against crude comedy by any means - I love it - but sometimes it is good to watch something ...
...are a couple of swear words though). For that, writers David Koepp (also the director) and John Kamps should be commended. The film is a spin on the rom com - in some ways, it is almost an anti-rom com, simply because Bertram is so unromantic. From that point of view, I liked it; I'm far too old and cynical to enjoy watching slushy romances, even funny ones. There is, however, very little chemistry between Ricky Gervais and Tea Leoni. That works ...

Only Floss The Teeth That You Want To Keep.

Advantages: A funny movie that keeps you laughing
Disadvantages: If you hate Ricky Gervais you'll hate this

When Bertram Pincus goes into hospital for a simple operation something strange happens to him and when he leaves he can suddenly see dead people. It turns out that people person Pincus died for less than 7 minutes on the operating table. Now that he can see the dead they want him to help them to make someone feel better. ...impending marriage. Pincus agrees and as he gets to know Gwen he starts to fall in love with her but the complications along the way create a number of obstacles. This is one of those films that looked really good on the adverts and while I had a little trepidation about watching it, I decided to go into it with an open mind. My main concern was whether a comedy about a Dentist who could interact with dead people would work and particularly as Gervais ...

He sees dead people, and ignores them!

Advantages: None what so ever
Disadvantages: Wish they'd written more for the ghosts

I'll start by saying I don't like Ricky Gervais and have never found him funny so this was going to have to be phenomenal to impress me. As far as I can recall I've only ever seen Greg Kinnear (playing Frank) in "Stuck On You" which I found mildly funny. Its hard to tell exactly what genre this film was aiming for as it misses comedy by a country mile and it wasn't really romantic enough to be a romcom, the humour (what little there was of it) wasn't ...
...movie about dead people so its not exactly a feel good flick either so I'd have to class this as an ego pic, solely written for Gervais to front. Fortunately for me Frank dies in the very 1st scene, Gervais plays Bertam Pincus, a dentist (I find it hard to believe he's a comedian so I really struggled to accept him playing a dentist) who is also a complete asshole (Gervais is VERY believable as an asshole) who goes into hospital for some sort of ...

...with his 'new-found-talent' ; watch Ghost Town to find out why! I'd read "quick" reviews about Ghost Town in various magazine and although I had a rough idea of what the movie was about , it wasn't a movie that I was planning on going to see at the cinema. It wasn't until I watched an episode of Friday Night With Jonathon Ross a few weeks back, where Ricky Gervais was a guest and promoting his new film , that I decided I wanted to see this film. ...

My friend and I waited almost ten minutes to be served and so when we eventually got into the cinema , the film had already started. We were disappointed at first , although we soon realised that the part we had missed wasn't enough to confuse us or make us 'not get' what the film ...

...hear ghosts, including one new ghost that tries to convince him to meet up with his partner and make her break up with her new boyfriend. - Thoughts & Opinions - Its a quirky, subtle comedy, it has no real laugh-out-loud gags as such. It has an interesting enough concept, though the plot I thought was a bit overly cheesy and sentimental for my liking really and its not a role for Ricky that challenges him as an actor at all, I felt, as again he plays ...

If your not so keen on Rickys other roles on TV and movies then don't bother with this one, I'd say, especially if the type of person he portrays in such shows, being this not so nice unsociable english man, annoys you. There are a couple of particularly awkward scenes, awkward for the main character, which is entertaining, amusing and awkward equally for the viewer, I think. Generally, ...

Ghost Town

Advantages: Funnyman Ricky Gervais
Disadvantages: It's underrated

The film seemed to gain so-so reviews from film critics, and poor reviews from dooyoo, but I still can't understand why! I absolutely Ricky Gervais, he's my favorite comedian, therefore I was so chuffed when I heard he was directing and starring in a film. I saw this film in the cinema as soon as it came out, and the entire audience laughed the whole way through, even though for most of it, it wasn't even laugh-out-loud, just Gervais's dry humour ...
...known for TV and comedian work up until this film, on shows such as The Office, Extras, and his portfolio of comedy DVDs. I was a bit worried that he wouldn't quite be suited to a cinema screen and that maybe he wouldn't keep being funny for the entire length of the film, but I was wrong, he could, and also we get to see a much softer and less sarcastic side of Gervais in parts, too. For the storyline, we follow Gervais's life as a very boring, very ...

An amazing movie that made me laugh and cry!

Advantages: the full gamult of emotion - funny and sad in all the right places
Disadvantages: None!

Like many, I first became aware of Ricky Gervais through 'The Office'. I was fascinated by the show, and Gervais' portrayal of a cringe-worthy, attention seeking boss was just perfect. After a couple of series, the world thought so too, and Gervais stopped the show. I waited with baited breath to see what he would do next, and he came up with a few stand-up tours and a series of podcasts, which really frustrated me; Gervais' arrogance really shone ...
...people, and he just left a bad taste in my mouth. Had the fame gone to his head, or had he always been like this? I was now just a semi-fan, and the next project was make or break for me. Luckily, it was 'Extras', a fantastic sitcom based around the TV and film industry. Gervais' character, Andy Millman, was much more vulnerable than the real-life Gervais, and yet still highly comical - it was a winning formula. When the US, against all reason, ...

So when a routine operation goes awry and Pincus dies for (almost) seven minutes, giving him the ability to see the dead, he is not best pleased as he is forced to help one of them with some unfinished business. The moments where the film tends to be quite sweet or sentimental are clouded ...
