The story tells the story of Jack the Ripper, one of the most notorious murderers in the late eighteenth century. We meet Mary Kelly (played by Heather Graham) a prostitute, and her friends (also prostitutes) who live in constant fear of a street gang called the Nickle's Boys, who they must pay a pound a week each to assure their 'protection'. A must see movie! I was lucky enough to see this film before general release and I'm glad I went.
The story is based around the "Jack the Ripper" murders which took place in 1888 in Whitechapel, London. Prostitutes, or "unfortunates" as they were then known, are found on every corner, trying to earn enough money for a sleep and some nourishment, but it's not easy as they also have to earn enough to pay of the protection teams, in this story the ... ...Annie, Long Liz and Kate, touting their wares and spending most of their earnings in the Ten Bells pub, trying to forget what got them the money to drink in there. An old friend Anne, who used to be an unfortunate, disappears one day after asking the girls to look after her baby so that she could spend some time with her rich, artist friend, the father of the child. The girls have no idea where she is and strangely the baby and her grandparents disappear ...

Advantages: great roles for Depp and Coltrane Disadvantages: loses its intensity by the end
...to what actually went on. From Hell offers just one more angle, but it should always be borne in mind that this is a film made for pure entertainment and never intended to be a factual offering or a serious new theory. I must confess that Im aware of a number of the main theories behind the case, but the thread of this story was new to me, and even though the main characters are portrayals of the actual people involved in the events, only a ripper ... ...once it has been detached from the real-life events of 1888, it does a very good job.
The basic story is probably familiar to many, so there is no need to go into too much detail, but basically it is the original serial killer story given an interesting twist by the way the main character is portrayed. Inspector Abberline (Johnny Depp) is the man leading the investigation into a growing serial murder case in the Whitechappel district of London. ...

From Hell is about Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper went on a brutal killing spree of prostitutes in 1888 Whitechapel. He was never caught, so I did wonder how the film would incorporate this little fact. Enough said I don’t want to give anything away.
I did like this film despite it’s cliches and its very cliched. Heahter Graham plays Mary Kelly a flame haired, Irish tart with a heart. Johnny Depp is a brilliant, but flawed opium addicted policeman. ... ...husband who took her away from a life of prostitution. He is often away, one day when he returns from a trip him and Ann are kidnapped by shadowy figures. Ann is interrogated by men who keep asking ‘who else has she told’. Ann doesn’t know what they mean, but ends up being lobotomised anyway.
One of the circle is brutally stabbed to death whilst at working. It’s straight after this first murder that we are introduced to Inspector Fred Abberline ...

Advantages: Well acted, not to much gore Disadvantages: Far from the book, dull
...not enjoy this, a part from it completely ignoring the whole feel and plot of the book, well quite simply it is dull and does not quite know quite what it is trying to be. It is clearly not a suspense thriller and there are no jumps for the audience. It is not interesting enough to make an engaging drama or a detective story. It does not add any insight into the reality of the crimes themselves and therefore has nothing much to say about the man ...

Quick review of From Hell (DVD)
This film is one of my faves. It is about prostitues out on the street only trying to earn a living which get killed by people they are owing money to. It is a very sad and quite scary film. With violence, nudity, friendship and love in. The end is very very sad ending the two lovers get seperated ...
Advantages: Great acting, story and very watchable. Disadvantages: None
...a handful of prostitutes.
From Hell (2001) is a ‘suggestion’ of what might have happened in the late nineteenth century when Jack the Ripper committed those horrendous crimes. It stars the great Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sleep Hollow) and Robbie Coltraine (Cracker, Harry Potter) as the major investigators into the crime. Depp is Inspector Fred Abberline, the opium addicted policeman with the ‘visions’ and Coltraine is his sidekick.
Directed ... ...alternative story to the Ripper legend in which all the victims actually know each other. Their friend Ann is married and has a child with a man called Albert, but little do they all know, including Ann herself, that Albert is actually ‘Prince’ Albert. The government intervene, kidnap Ann and her child and she is gruesomely deemed insane, lobotomised and put into an asylum while the baby is put into an orphanage.
The rest of the gang and then hunted ...

Advantages: Johnny Depp and Heather Graham make a great acting duo. Disadvantages: There are a few things in this movie better off not thought of.
...murders of Jack The Ripper, from the 1800s... you know the one I mean - the one who murdered all those poor hookers. Heather Graham plays Mary Kelly, a poor woman with barely no choice but to sell herself for survival. Together with a group of her friends (who are also prostitues), they walk the streets for money. There are a lot of dangers and threats out against them, one of which is a gang that insists to be paid the money the are owed. One of ... ...knife in her... ... somewhere that would certainly be very unpleasant. The group sets out to raise the unrealistic amount of money needed as quickly as possible since they know they do not want any trouble. Then one of the friends of the group who has a husband and daughter, is seen being kidnapped and taken away, and not too long afterwards, one of the group members is attacked and horribly murdered, with many more to follow. It is up to Johnny ...

Advantages: Its a good take on the ripper stories Disadvantages: ....but the ripper story has been done many times
On the sinister 1888 streets of White Chapel London a killer is on the loose and the case grabs the attention of a opium loving inspector, Inspector Frederick George Abberline(Johnny Depp). The inspector has been known to use his psychic "visions" to help him so when his vison start of the this case then it takes on a personal meaning for him. One by one the ladies are starting to vanish then turn up brutally carved, with each time Abberline having graphic visions of the gruesome murder. This film is great fantastic and I loved it. Ripper and horror fans alike will enjoy. Though some may think its gory it is as it happened to these prostitutes who where also good friends which this film also picks up on. It has a 18 rating and so it should, not for the light hearted but again I say the film is factual. Overall a good film for any horror buff as ...

It is not about Jack The Ripper, if anybody had any general knowledge about Jack The Ripper they would know! I thought this film was very good, good acting! The way the camera moves about the place and zooms in and sudden flashes of things is very different of a "new trying to be set in the old days" film, they usually try to do that on new films! I would watch it again if I had chance! Johny Depp is a good actor, he is going to be in some good films ...

Advantages: - Disadvantages: Disturbing, poor in everything
...the first defined serial killer. from hell is the hughes? brothers attempt at bringing to life the graphic novel by alan moore and eddie campbell. while the concept could easily produce a hell of a movie, the attempt made here left my expectations short on all accounts. plot any movie of jack the ripper has the opportunity to bring its viewers into the mind of madness. the potential that from hell missed in its many twisting plot lines is quite depressing. ... ...life. the third plot in from hell makes us believe that with all of the hell found, romance can blossom. in his investigation of the mysterious murders, abberline supposedly falls in love with one of the prostitutes, Mary Jane Kelly (Heather Graham). Caused both by Depp?s dryness of acting as well as poor writing, the romantic plot in From Hell is discarded in the gutters of Whitechapel as the audience is left unable to determine anyone?s true feelings. ...
