...Ballad of Serenity" == FIREFLY == === The Show That Could Have Been === Joss Whedon is one of the few geniuses in the industry right now, and this show, Firefly, was the TV series that got me hooked on all of Joss Whedon's creations. ...to watch the television series Firefly as the film was actually a continuation of that storyline. As this doesn't seem to appear on TV that often (that I've noticed at least) the only choice I really had was to buy the boxset. ...~~~ The Plot ~~~
Firefly is set in a future where mankind has populated other worlds, particularly a system of terraformed planets and moons. The inner planets are highly technological, but the outer ones are more primitive. The system is ruled over by the Alliance, but they have much less of a presence on the outer or border worlds. The series is set shortly after a war between the Alliance and the Independents. The Independents lost. Two of the ... ...Alliance. It's set aboard a Firefly class transport ship called Serenity, named after a major battle during the war. The ship's captain will take any job regardless of legality in order to keep his crew safe and paid. This means that they're often in trouble with the law. Trouble becomes an understatement however when they take on some passengers. The series feels very much like a western at times. The boarder worlds where much of the action takes ...

Advantages: Excellent script/writing, fantastic characters, and a good overall "look" and "feel" to the show. Disadvantages: There is only one season of Firefly
...If you're familiar with Firefly feel free to skim parts of the review, if you've never heard of the show then I hope this review gives you the information you need to be informed about the series, Firefly.
Firefly is a fantastic TV series written by Joss Whedon. It graced the us, the viewing audience, with its presence on our television sets in the years 2002 and 2003 and is now available on DVD as a boxed set.
~Who is this Joss Whedon Guy Anyway?~
... ...(the movie based on the Firefly series). He also wrote the screenplay for Toy Story.
His writing is the reason that Firefly has such creative, witty, and humorous dialogue and works so well.
~So what exactly *IS* Firefly?~
It is a TV series about the adventures and experiences of the crew of Serenity, which is a Firefly class starship (and thus where the series gets its name). The series was inspired by the American Civil War and the Reconstruction ...

To bridge the gap between the TV series ending and the start of the film, there is a three-part comic series called "Serenity: Those Left Behind". ...review. Suffice to say Firefly converted me from only healthy sci-fi geekery (Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars etc) to fully-fledged obsession. For your £14.43 (delivered) to Amazon you get four DVDs and fourteen episodes of complete perfection that personally speaking, will remain a favourite for the rest of my life.
An extremely good summary of the plot can be found in the other review of this DVD, so I will merely precis it here: 500 years into ... ...I could just listen to Firefly without the picture as the thought that has gone into the writing is so evident and gratifying. And it's absolutely, utterly hilarious, ripping the guts out of the stiff, overly mannered faux-science arsewittery that poor belatexed actors usually have to spout in spacebound series.
The extras on the DVD are amusing and absorbing - having Joss natter on in the commentary as to why they did this or that is fascinating. ...

But then I had a look on imdb to see if that was really how it went and I noticed that Toy Story, Alien: Resurection (what was he thinking) and Titan AE are also in the list. Advantages: The boxset is inexspensive, and you can also get a feature length movie called Serenity to go with it, long lasting entertainment, crosses genres so that nonsci fi fans still get hooked Disadvantages: Fox cancelled it, so unless someone commisons more, this is it. Did I mention this show is addictive?
I came upon this series quite by accident. I was looking through listings one night, and nothing else decent was on at the time, so I flicked to the Sci Fi channel's reshowing of the original Star Trek series. That moment changed my life forever, and made me a big flan (NO, that is NOT a typo) and, dare I admit it, a Browncoat. What WAS this?! I simply had to satisfy my idle curiosity.
So on Friday, I set my Sky+ and when I actually had time to watch it, I did. I split my gut laughing. Not because it was bad or anything, but sheerly from the humour imbued within the crew's life. A good bit ...

THE PLOT
Firefly is the greatest TV show that has ever been made. Not only is it the greatest TV show ...but also one of the greatest stories that has ever been told.
Created by Joss Whedon, most famous for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, it tells the story of Malcolm Reynolds, who was on the losing side in a galactic Civil War.
Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, is a very Han Solo like hero, though with more depth. He was a Sergeant ... ...that governs the galaxy. Firefly tells of his struggle to stay free from Alliance control in the years following the war...as the Alliance tightens it's grip around the lives and the minds of the people under it's influence. Reynolds and his loyal first mate Zoe find themselves a ship called Serenity and sail the galaxy far and wide...always staying one step ahead of the Alliance. They take whatever job they can, legal or otherwise, in order to keep ...

...But the fact is, the Firefly concept is one which works perfectly, here you have a show which displays people flying around in space-ships with laser beams, warp drive and all the other trappings of the future, while also shooting each other with derringers and occasionally charging away on a horse. Background:
---------------
The idea for Firefly occurred to Whedon after a brief study of the battle of Gettysburg, one of the more eventful conflicts of the American Civil War. Cowboys in space. That is what my friend told me when he recommended 'Firefly' I mean what is not to like, cowboys in space, it is every boys dream combination. ...guys loose. Only difference in firefly is that the good guys are just like the bad guys, just a bit querkier. The scene is a few hundred years into the future, after the browncoats (resistance) lost the battle of Serenity, two of its members sarted up a ship to go wherever they pleased, and to make a new life. This film has all the qualities of a brilliant tv series; a brilliant cast, excellent one liners and a sustained theme, but none of the downsides like repetetiveness or poor script.
